Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
The B+W #900 lens hood is made out of a high-quality matte black rubber and folds down and protects against contrast-reducing, uncontrolled, stray light. It is designed to match the focal length of standard lenses (50mm).

I bought this to use on my 50mm lens, but also put it on my 18-55mm which I use more often.
(I use a crop sensor Canon XSi, multiply by 1.6 for 35mm equivalent)
It works without vignetting down to about 22mm on the 18-55.
The main reason I bought a screw-in hood was to use it with a circular polarizer (it would be nearly impossible to rotate the polarizer with a standard hood).
With the hood installed on top of the filter, it vignettes a bit sooner, ~24mm, and it is also slightly visible even when folded at 18mm.
I was originally going to subtract one star because it doesn't fold completely out of view at 18mm but, of course, it was not designed to be used at that wide of an angle.
Therefore, I have no complaints.
It is easy and convenient to use, folds in and out with a touch, and does what it was designed to do.
Compare this to the Canon hood for the 50mm f/1.4, at 3x the price, useable (presumably) only on that lens, and non-folding, and it's a no-brainer.

I tried to find a decent screw-on or bayonet mount lens hood to fit a 58mm lens filter on a Nikon DX zoom lens. This was the only one I could find, except for a cheap one I bought elsewhere. This hood is slightly longer than the one it replaced, and causes vignetting when I zoom all the way out. The lens hood itself is great quality otherwise.

Low-cost and effective. Can be folded back. Collapses for easy storage. I knew vignetting could be an issue. Sure enough, the hood came into view when wider than about 22mm with my EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. I did have the lens hood mounted in front of a filter. Just something to keep in mind.

This is a great little hood. Easy to put on, and easy to put on the cap. No vignetting at 18mm on my 18-55mm lens when folded back, but you will see vignetting if you also stack a filter.

I use this on my Nikon 55-300 ED lens. It comes folded in a nice thin plastic case. It's a lot more rugged and more easily stowable than the flimsy Nikon hood that came with the lens.

This hood is better than the "generic" cheaper versions; the rubber is of higher quality and should last.

These rubber hoods are much better than the plastic ones.
Make sure you order a rubber hood with every new lens - I do now.
I also have the hard plastic Canon hood but it fouls with the tripod quick release plate I use.
No such issues with the rubber hoods.

I use this hood on my Canon 28mm. I like having the ability to expand/contract the hood as needed. For me, it's much more convenient than detaching a regular hood and flipping it around backwards on the lens for storage. In my experience, it performs just as well as the standard plastic hoods.

Does the same job as a normal lens hood without the hassle of removing the hood from the lens. I think it looks great too. I would buy again.

I'm new in photography but my sis owned a photo shop so I have seen many photo accessories. This Lens Hood is one of the nicest. It folds back (together) with a simple push and pulls out for quick use. It allows keeping the lens hood on when storing or in the Camera bag. It is so handy.
The rubber isn't cheap or flimsy, it should last many many years.
The threads are perfect, without effort or fiddling fit perfectly. As added bonus and protection, when the hood is collapsed it allows the Lens Cap to cover the lens. The lens cap protrudes about 5mm (less than 1/4") past the Hood, therefore storage height wise (length of lens) is not a factor. Width wise adds about 5mm (1/4") to the circumference.

I bought this hood after much research of prior reviews on B&H includings ones that said it would work on the EF-S 18-55. I tried this hood on my EF-S 18-55 as it was the wider of the two I purchased. I experienced vignetting on both my 18-55 and 55-250 with this hood.

I was looking for a means to diffuse light entering my camera lens. I was torn between a fixed profile lens hood and a folding rubber lens hood. Upon recommendation from others, i opted for the folding lens hood as it would fit into my camera bag. I am so happy that I made this choice.[...]

I have used this lens hood on my 50mm lens and so far really like the quality and protection it offers. For simple protection of the lens, it is great and guards against small dings and hits which occur to the camera in general use. It seems to work well for outdoors photography as well.

When you attach it to a Kalt 49mm Metal Lens Hood it fits perfectly on to a Fuji Film Fine Pix S1500 camera. If you need a lens hood for this type of camera this is the way to go. I bought both itmes at B&H and it's well worth it.
