Questions? Ask our experts:

Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

The B+W #960 metal telephoto lens hood is made of black-anodized aluminum with light-absorbing flat black ribs on the inside, and due to it's cylindrical shape this hood is especially suited for telephoto lenses.

Comments about B+W 52mm Screw-In Metal Telephoto Lens Hood #960:

Got two of thesefor the Canon 10x42L binocs I got from B&H. They keep out the stray light and slightly increase contrast, and keep the objectives much cleaner than without. Then 10x42Ls are the best binoculars I've ever looked through but objectives are too close to the very edge of the binoc housing.

Comments about B+W 52mm Screw-In Metal Telephoto Lens Hood #960:

I bought this hood for my 45mm lens which is actually a 90mm with my camera's crop factor. Fits it fine. There's no vignetting on the corners. In fact, there seems to be 1 - 3 millimeters space between the corners of my frame and this hood. That's good in case I want to add a couple filters between the lens and this hood. It's lightweight and strong. My only complaint is that it doesn't collapse for storage like some of my rubber lens hoods.

Comments about B+W 52mm Screw-In Metal Telephoto Lens Hood #960:

These work very nicely with the 10x42 binoculars. They shield the front elements from raindrops and cut down on glare. Additionally, they can be unscrewed and slipped over the eyepieces, so that the binoculars still fit in their storage case. Definitely a must if using the binoculars in the rain!

Comments about B+W 52mm Screw-In Metal Telephoto Lens Hood #960:

I use the hood for my 70-210mm telephoto push-pull lens. It is sufficiently long and narrow to block out light and yet shows no vignetting at any focal length. Exactly what I was looking for. Solid metal construction makes it a great safety feature for the lens. Very lightweight; made from a high quality aluminum. Looks great! The only downside I have found is that it doesn't allow for using a lens cap when the hood is on.

I use this on my old Nikon 100mm 2.8 Series E. If you happen to be thinking about using this hood on that lens, it looks as if they were made for each other. The build quality is outstanding. It may be a bit pricy but you get what you pay for.

Comments about B+W 52mm Screw-In Metal Telephoto Lens Hood #960:

I purchased a pair of these lens hoods to go on my Canon 10x42 binoculars. I had two things in mind - suppress glare when looking toward bright lights (REMEMBER - DO NOT LOOK AT THE SUN!) and preventing dewing when I use the binoculars for extended periods at night.

Viewing through the bino's, they do exactly what I wanted. I don't see any vignetting.

Comments about B+W 52mm Screw-In Metal Telephoto Lens Hood #960:

Bought this for my Zoom-Nikkor 70-210mm f/4.5-5.6 manual focus (push-pull zoom) lens so I could stop using hoods held together with black tape on it as I didn't yet have a hood for this lens.

Not too much one can say here; it's a lens hood. Appears to be well-manufactured and sturdy (only the slightest bending when I squeeze the non-threaded end), and no problems so far with getting it to attach to my lenses. The image on B&H makes this hood look medium-gray, but it's actually black, in the event that this is a concern to anyone considering this product.

My only con here (and the reason for the four stars) is that it is the narrowest hood I've ever seen. It flares outward from the threads about 3mm, and then it's straight forward from the lens after that. This creates ample opportunity for vignetting, particularly for lenses in which the front element moves out during focusing or zooming. On my 70-210mm zoom, it creates a barely noticeable vignette when focused all the way in at focal lengths above ~135mm on a DX sensor. It is even more noticeable on and FX/35mm image at all lengths, if you're picky, and is quite obvious again when zoomed out and focused in. It's not too bad in my view, probably only about one- to two-thirds stops, but those seeking the best would be advised to go with an alternative unless your tele has a very narrow FoV.
