The EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens from Canon is designed to meet the needs of a wide range of advanced amateurs and professionals. With its f/2 maximum aperture, it is effective in low light situations and able to obtain shallow depth of field with superior background blur. A ten element optical formula with two UD-glass elements serves to correct residual aberrations, resulting in superb sharpness and high image quality.

An ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) enables fast, smooth and silent autofocus and fulltime manual override allows for precise manual focus even in autofocus mode. The minimum focus distance for the 135mm f/2 is 3.0'. A switch on the lens barrel enables you to adjust the focusing distance range for faster autofocus speed. It is a stellar portrait and available light lens and is fully compatible with the Canon EF1.4x II and EF2.0x II extenders.

Two UD Glass Elements
Two UD-glass elements minimize aberrations and result in sharp pictures from corner-to-corner.
Ultrasonic Autofocus Motor
An Ultrasonic Autofocus Motor (USM) provides fast, smooth and quiet autofocus.
Focus Range Limiter
On the 135mm f/2L lens you can choose the focusing distance range with a switch on the lens barrel. By setting a suitable focusing distance range, actual autofocus time can be shorter. The two focusing ranges are 3.0' to infinity and 5.2' to infinity
Manual Focus Override
Full-time manual focus override allows you to use manual focus mode for precision focusing at any time, even when in autofocus mode.

This lens is amazing. I pair it with a Canon 5D Mk II and everything about this combination works just perfect for me. I shoot portraits of couples and solo portraits with this and the pictures just blow my mind each time I download them from a shoot.

When used with the right technique and shot wide open, the lens offers just the right level of background compression and subject isolation in my opinion. The focal length almost forces you to maintain the right subject distance and as a result, almost the entire subject is in sharp focus and rest of the background is just beautifully blurred. The bokeh is just not only melty but also has a beautiful character to it. It looks very pleasant to my eye. The lens produces stunning contrast right out of the camera, beautiful colors and corner sharpness even when shooting wide open at f/2.

The focus locking is so perfect - the lens never hunts on my body. The weight is just right too and with a wide aperture, a lot of creative possibilities are afforded on the shoot.

If you shoot people and are looking for a nice keeper lens that will give you a lot of mileage over a long period of time, you are looking at a winner here.
PS: Attaching a few shots from a recent lifestyle couple's photoshoot that I shot here in Arizona.

I bought this lens because so many people said they used it for sports in a gym with a crop sensor. That gets them close to 200mm without investing in a 70-200mm. I shoot XC, and Indoor and outdoor track and field. I use my 70-200mm with 5DMarkIII for running events and a 7D with the 135mm for field events. I've only used it once, so I'm not making a clear judgement yet, but I did not find it such a snappy focusing lens. I would say 50-60% of my shots were out of focus. I made adjustments to the focusing on the camera thinking that was the problem, but that yielded a rate of about 40-50% out of focus shots. Some were back focused so maybe a micro adjustment is needed? I did not just love this lens at first use like I did my 70-200mm. I plan on more use and an update of this review, but wanted to get my thoughts out.
It is lightweight, and sharp when shooting static subjects. Color is good, and I did not see any CA.

Comments about Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens:

I have been taking pictures forever, but I am new to the amateur photography scene. I took a class online this summer and my love for photography has taken over all of my free time. My primary subjects are my two toddlers and my 17 year old son. I bought this lens after reading many positive reviews, ranting about how incredible it was. My husband was sceptical and didn't really believe the hype until he saw the photos! This lens is so fun! When I post pics on FB I get so many compliments and inquiries about what classes I am taking and what equipment I am using. My pictures look amazing. I use the lens around the house to capture everyday activities in low light and at the soccer field catching action photos of my son (with the 1.4x extender). The lens was worth every penny!

Comments about Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens:

This easy-to-use prime allows maunal focus during auto-focus mode, while producing spectacular results in DOF contrast/bokeh. Though a bit heavy, this lens is about half a pound lighter than the Zeiss 135mm, at about half the price, achieving levels of performance par excellence in grade.

Simply stated - It may be one of the oldest 'L' series primes out there but it still shines with amazing sharpness, color and contrast and is a go to lens for portrait work as well as video. It has become a regular on the cameras on wedding days.

I got this lens because I was tired of lugging around my 70-200mm 2.8 which is pretty heavy. This lens is NOT heavy, anyone who thinks so has never carried anything in their life. This is much sharper and overall better portrait lens IMO. I will be using this for portrait sessions outdoors, can't wait to use it more!

Comments about Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens:

Have used the lens one time, at the Colts/Jaguars game about two weeks ago. It is the longest lens the NFL will allow a non-pro to bring into a stadium. I used it for candid portraits mostly: players, D-line drummers, cheerleaders, fans, and Jaxson De ville the self-proclaimed best mascot in sports.

I had been using my f2.8 100 mm to shoot these games up to now. The extra 35mm and incredible sharpness of the 135 were noticeable. Paired with my MK III the focus was super fast. The 100 mm will go back to its pouch and come out for macro use only. The 135 is now my go-to portrait lens.

Comments about Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens:

Speedy AF that keeps up with anything. Of course that background smashing ability is great. Also prefer it's size to a 70-200.

My first evening with the 135mm I ventured into a lowlit, overcast mountain area. The resulting shots were very cool- I know I will find many uses for this excellent lens over the years.

Comments about Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens:

There is a reason so many people consider this lens the KING OF THE L LENS. It's amazingly sharp, the bokeh is absolutely beautiful, and the lens is well built, with a smooth and great feeling focus ring. I can't recommend this lens enough. We shoot all video, and it's an amazing lens for video.

Great lens - excellent value - lightweight too. And excellent choice of focal length for portraits and loads of glass for low-light work.

it is a bit heavy, but very sharp glass, produces very nice bokeh. It is one of the best portrait lens.
