I used this stand for recording. The major problem with the stand is the telescopic extentsions. They don't hold. After getting the stand fully extended, the telescopic sections retract. Not a convinient situation while trying to record.
Now, it might be me not knowing how these work. However; the stand came with no instructions.

The positives of the stand are it's strong construction, but yet it is light.

Comments about Shure S15A - Microphone Stand:

I own two S15A stands. One is seven years old, and has been, and still is, a workhorse. My new one (2015) is dysfunctional. Shure changed the design of the knurled collars and nylon rings that hold up each section of the stand. The knurled collars are quite loose, and the rings are not properly sized. As a previous reviewer stated, certain sections of the stand simply won't tighten down. I learned this by surprise on a high profile recording gig, which was compromised. That'll be the last time I mount a pair of Schoeps mics on top of this thing.
      Shure should offer a recall.

A very light weight professional stand that I use on location recordings especially when I record large ensembles like bands, choirs and orchestras. Can't do without them. I've been using the S15's for over 20 years and love the new S15A stand.

Comments about Shure S15A - Microphone Stand:

This is a great stand for whenever you need to fly mics high above the crowd. I have owned tall mic stands for over 20 years and shure has listed and made each generation of stands better. Best change in this stand is the solid piece that now crowns the stand. Previous generations have had just a threaded aluminum tube at top but this one has a solid metal mount to screw your mic clip or stereo bar onto the stand. Much more durable than earlier models.

Comments about Shure S15A - Microphone Stand:

I use this stand for live concert recordings. It works well for this purpose, and gets to a good height. Its design makes it slightly difficult to open and close, and can be painful on my hands to do. I've found that it is easier to open and close if you don't fully collapse it. You have to leave a little space between the sections. However, then it doesn't fit very well in its fancy carrying bag.

Comments about Shure S15A - Microphone Stand:

I own (2) of these "newer" S-15 mic stands and (2) of the older model S-15 stands. Shure re-designed the stand, but only added an "A" to the model number.

The old model used flat legs which are smaller/thinner than the current tubelar legs. They were more than strong enough, and resulted in a folded stand that was much smaller and easier to carry.

the "old" model used small setscrews to lock each extended section. I found those much easier to use and more positive in their ability to lock the extended telescopic sections than the current "collars". The loss of the setscrews was a serious mistake.

The new model looks better but does not work nearly as well as the old one. Additionally, many applications these days require a black mc stand. the Shure S-15 is only available in highly reflective silver.

I've already picked up a couple of Manfrotto 1004 BAC 12 ft. stands and prefer them over the "new" S-15.

Comments about Shure S15A - Microphone Stand:

Have used this stand for years. I am replacing it with an Impact 13' light stand. My main complaint is the unwieldy threaded barrel tighteners. They can be unreliable, and will slip. If they become over tight, they are difficult to release. Just not the best system. The older ones had thumb screws which was a much better way. . .

This stand is sturdy and lightweight and comes with its own carrying case - overall a great product!

My only qualm is that the tightening/extending mechanism can be a little difficult to master at first, but once you figure it out, it works really really well!

Comments about Shure S15A - Microphone Stand:

I use this stand to make acoustic recordings of instrumental solo recitals to large orchestras. The variable height gives me flexibility to work in many different size spaces with the same strand.

Works quite well up to 12 or 13 feet, feels slightly wobbly at full extension. Also, some minor bowing at full extension. Set-up is very straight forward. Mounting threads at top just barely too large for my K&M 23510 stereo mic bar, making it difficult to get on or off, but the bar still mounts securely.

At this price I have yet to see any other stand of comparable height and sturdiness.

It is very light for the height. Pretty easy to use after the first couple of uses.
The bag is a little small, but helps protect the stand well.
I'll probably purchase a second one soon.

This is the stand you need when you are trying to record your group in concert. It gets the microphones overhead for coincident or near coincident recording. Being up nice and high eliminates unwanted audience noise.

Other than that cavaet, the stand is sturdy and the height is great for outdoor events.

Comments about Shure S15A - Microphone Stand:

I used this stand for recording. The major problem with the stand is the telescopic extentsions. They don't hold. After getting the stand fully extended, the telescopic sections retract. Not a convinient situation while trying to record.
Now, it might be me not knowing how these work. However; the stand came with no instructions.

The positives of the stand are it's strong construction, but yet it is light.

Hard to tell when to stop tightening the shaft, the nuts keep turning after the shaft is tight. Other than that , its great!

I like the height... it lacks adjustable feet for use on sloped auditorium floors ... I find it kind of hard to screw lock each section without loosening the sections below it ... it would function much better with flip locks than it does with screw locks.

After lugging around a stand that was 1/2 as tall, and 10x heavier, this stand is a godsend! I love the rugged construction, smooth fittings and ultra-lightweight design. If you're looking for a 15-footer, look no more!
