Ok, this is one you are just going to have to hit Add to Cart and stop thinking about it. I read the many reviews and comparisons of this lens along with the Canon 28mm f/1.8 and Sigma 30mm f/1.4. Lest you think it is a difficult decision and you want to pay more money then stop reading. Otherwise buy this lens you won't regret it.
Sure it is not the best built lens in the lineup, but it would be hard to say after handling it that the 28mm f/1.8 is built any better. Unless you are traveling in the Amazon or repelling down Everest it will hold up just fine.
It is true, the focusing of this lens is loud. In fact the first time I heard it is was almost startlingly loud like something was wrong with it. It emits a higher pitched whining noise than the Canon 50 f/1.8 mkII. You get used to it though, to the point that you don't notice it. Not a deal breaker by any means in my opinion. Despite the loudness and not being a USM motor it focuses just as fast.
On to the optical performance...WOW! I was blown away at how sharp this lens was on my 40D. Sharp edge to edge and to the very tip of the corners. Definitely sharper than my 17-40 f/4L. Colors and contrast are also very good and saturation is high but not overly so. Colors are accurate and allow for plenty of color detail adjustments in software later. The detail, both in color and resolution, is really impressive even wide open at f/2 and just gets even better around f/5.6-f/8. Alot of information is recorded with this lens, a real winner. I would say it is at least as sharp as the Canon 50mm f/1.8II, if not sharper. Both likely exceed the resolution capabilities of your camera, unless maybe if you own a 50D.
It is roughly 56mm on a 1.6x crop body which certainly feels the same as the Canon 50mm f/1.8II on my old Elan 7. You do not have quite the same depth of field as the 50 1.8 because the crop cannot make up for that or simulate that plus the 35 is one stop slower. In all practicality this will serve the normal lens role very well.
Most manufacturer's 50mm lenses are slightly longer than that to allow for better portraits. They often actually measure 54-57mm in the lab, so this lens as 56mm on a 1.6 body more closely approximates a normal prime than the 28 does. The 28 definitely feels a bit wider than a 50mm should. So I feel, based on focal length alone, this lens is the best choice.
Based on this lens's performance compared to the Canon 28's and Sigma 30mm and based on its lower cost, I think this qualifies as a no brainier. So stop reading comparison charts, buy this lens, and go out and shoot.
BTW, the barrel does extend about a centimeter during focusing, but it does not rotate so a screw in polarizer is easy to use. The dedicated focusing ring helps alot compared to the nub on the end of the 50 f/1.8II.

I use the lens on a Canon 60D, also bought from BH.
I love the angle of the lens, the quality of the pictures, the colors. however, I don't know why, in low light situations, even when using the camera flash, an error appears on the camera screen and the lens aren't working anymore. The error prompts to clean the contacts between the camera and the lens. Very strange error. I used on this camera 15-85mm lens and 50mm in every condition. No such error with these two lenses.

I shoot weddings full rime and purchased this as a "just in case" backup. To my surprise, this lens is very sharp and 100% consistent. Zero barrel distortion and very minimal fringing. Yes, the AF is pretty funny sounding, however if you are using during a reception of an event where space is tight, that does not matter. Great buy for the price.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 35mm f/2.0 Autofocus Lens:
Probably still good value for money, but the autofocus is noisy and surprisingly slow. Much as you think this won't bother you in a 35mm prime, it's 2013 and it will bother you more than you think. Image quality is excellent except somewhat soft at the edges wide open.
I actually regret buying it and now wish I'd gone for the new 35mm IS.

I bought this lens for shooting a group portrait of 4 people, indoors, with tungsten light and a flat background. It's a cost effective option, it behaved well and looked great. The loud autofocus is something you can quickly get used to. I'm very happy with it, especially considering an f stop up and the price tag shoots through the roof.

I needed a smaller lens than what I have, for those close ups. I really like the bokeh it creates. It's a great buy and I use it more often than my others so it has a thumbs up for me.

Very sharp little lens. Not quite as fast as others I own but it's fine. For the money, it's very much worth it and I am glad I got it to add to my prime collection - great to have a wider perspective.

Pictures appear pretty sharp with this lens. Also, gives a pretty decent focal length on a crop sensor. Despite of the slow and loud focus, I still think it is worth the price.

I bought this for shoots that required lower light and I've always been happy with the IQ from prime lenses. This one is no exception - I'm very pleased with the images that I get with it.
In addition, it's very light-weight and portable - I can stick it in my jacket pocket if I'm out and want to quickly switch lenses.
It is a prime lens, so it doesn't fit all conditions - does show line distortion with some compositions, but that's part of the fun of having a wide-angle.

So as photographer early in my career, I highly recommend this prime lens. Granted, with gear lust I wish I could afford the L series of Canon lenses. However, for what I am using it for, primarily events this wide angle lens is just awesome!

It's a nice little lens for portrait photography! My only complaint is that it's a little loud when it focuses, so using it for sleepy newborn sessions may not be ideal. Other than that, I'm very happy with my purchase!

This lens was ordered for my daughter. She was saving for the lens to utilize the wider angle in small spaces (i.e. dorm room)and lower light. The lens takes beautiful photos; however, she had to use manual focus when we were experimenting at home. The lens was noisy, too- sounding like gears grinding. She is happy with the results that she is receiving and looks forward to using it in portraiture

I usually photograph wildlife and landscapes, so when a friend asked me to shoot his wedding, I realized I did not have the right lenses for low-light interior photography. A bit of research led me to this lens, and I was amazed at the light gathering ability as well as its sharpness, even wide open.
Some people have commented that its focus is very loud, but I did not find the sound to be a problem, and neither did the wedding party. I can't wait to try this lens out for landscape photos in low light conditions.

This Product is Great for the price! Connects easy. Quick change out usability for on the run shooting. Just shot two music Video's with it and they look great. Has that Shallow depth of field look everyone looks for. This Lense is great in low light. It has a sturdy feel, no cheap clunky parts. Every moving part on the Lense has a smooth working feel to it.
I love it!
