There are many filter manufacturers with a range of pricing, but why should one stick with OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) instead of after market ones when it come to filters?

1. Color matching. A given manufacturer color match their elements for the best performance, thus when the filter is being made, tolerance in thickness, light transmission index is under strict control. I used to use other brands that are usually cheaper, but under the best of circumstances they are a tad shy in maintaining steady performance, and sometimess resulting in unexpected color shift.

2. This is a thin mount filter, a slight annoyance is that there is a very slight movement of the glass detected in the ring. I think this is a manufacturing issue, perhaps the mounting ring is thin therefore it is not as rigid.

3. Filters are protective investment, a small price to pay should something hit the front element. This is a good common sense product.

4. The only reason I give it a 4 and not 5 star is the price. I wish it were lower.

I would never spend several thousand $ on a lens and not protect the front element. Having said that, I would also not spend a lot of money on a lens and place a cheap piece of glass in front of it. Remember, the quality of your lens is limited by the quality of your filter. Period. Remember the 'weakest link' theory. Therefore, if you use a cheap filter on your expensive lens, you are now shooting through a cheap lens. Don't scrimp on your protective filter!

I purchased this filter to use on my brand new 70-200 VR2..I wanted to be sure that I kept a filter on the front of my new investment. I never used filters in the past...I would just "clean" my lenses carefully..But now after seeing that there is "no" difference in quality of pics ..I'm so pleased.. Now I can rest easy and know that all I have to do is clean the outer filter glass..Also,,it's made by Nikon..doesn't it make sense to put Nikon filters with Nikon glass?? I think so..and you won't be disappointed.. I'm now a "filter" user..

I bought this filter to protect the front glass of the lens. It is much easier to clean the filter rather than the lens itself.
This filter is listed in the Nikon booklet as recomended filter for protection. It is a clear filter (basically a very expensive piece of glass) so, as it should be, it does not affect the quality of the pictures. It is the only filter I was able to find that does not really "filter" anything (UV etc).

I have up to now been very cautious about adding any filters to a quality lens to avoid compromising the optics. As a Nikon shooter, I have stuck to their slimline circular polarizers over other brands. I recently brought the classic pair of 2.8's; the 24-70 & 70-200 so looked again at a clear glass filter for added, long term protection. All the reviews on this site of this filter were positive, with no image distortion being seen. So that did it. And yes, I can see no degredation in image quality with this filter in place. So for expensive glass I have three suggetions for a long life: use the lens hood, keep it clean and add this filter.

I use it on my Nikkor 85mm f1.4. Clear as air (non- polluted). I have one for all my lenses for protection from dust and fingerprints. Have not noticed any image quality being affected. Quality is solid.

Nikon NC filters are the only answer as far as I'm concerned for lens protection. Unless one is using a variety of filters for artistic effect, the NC filter can remain a permanent fixture on a lens.

Each lens is different, but I have found the Nikon NC filter to add no reflections when shooting into sources of bright light, including oncoming headlights!

This product is highly recommended, as is the seller, B and H!

Used it on my AF-S 24-70mm F2.8G ED for protection also had another one on my 80-200mm F2.8 and recently upgraded to 70-200mm VRII.
No vignetting at wide-angle and no loss in light.
Must have on any lens.

How you use the product Things that are great about it Things that aren't so great about itWell you screw it own to the front of a lens with a 77mm front and leave it there to protect the front element. What is great about this product is it clear and has a low profile. Things that aren't so great is the glass is still lose with in the metal so it isn't sealed from atmospheric pressure which could allow dust in if you change alititueds alot.
