This is a very light stand. I've used two for several years for studio photography work and never had a problem with them. They are extremely light and fold down to a surprisingly small size. Good quality for the money.

The only possible downside to these is that you have to be aware of what these stands can hold. I use them for hot lights, which aren't too demanding weight-wise. If I were to put a heavy monolight on these, then I might be concerned.

Comments about Smith-Victor RS6 6' Aluminum Light Stand with 5/8" Top Mount:

I bought this because I needed a mic stand that would fit in a suitcase, which it did. The mention of a 5/8" Top Mount was a determining factor, the standard US mic stand thread being 5/8"-27. The stand actually has a 1/4"-20 thread on top, so I needed to buy the Windtech M7 adapter make it work.

Comments about Smith-Victor RS6 6' Aluminum Light Stand with 5/8" Top Mount:

Considering the price, I was not expecting too much - but since these (I bought 3) were only to be used for speedlights and small dome lights, I was not too concerned about max weight load or instability. On the other hand, there is nothing more embarrassing than to be on site and your equipment falls apart -- so being able to hold up under general use was a concern. When they arrived, I was very surprised to see that they appear to be very well made! No, they do not feel like a Gitzo tripod--but with care, I think they will last many years without any problems. It's a very sturdy light stand that set up easily and does exactly what I need it to do without any concerns that it will just 'fall apart'. I think with aluminum you have to find that 'sweet spot' of snug enough to keep the section from moving but not too tight to where you may damage the tube. I especially like how they fold up into a very compact size. Overall, they appear to be very well made, and are an excellent value for the price paid.

I debated between this stand and a few others in the same price range, and I'm really happy with my purchase. The stand is well constructed, and the materials feel like very high quality, given the price point. (I should say that I am using this stand to support speedlights, so weight capacity isn't very important to me. However, if I had something heavier than this, I would be concerned when I had the stand extended to it's full height because it would get a little wobbly.) I would not hesitate in buying another one of these stands in the future.

So this is is a very lightweight stand. Do not expect it to hold a chimera or anything that puts its center of gravity out away from the center post. I put a lowell riffa 66 on it and raised it up all the way. It bowed the stand in a rather scary way. If you don't raise the top extension, it should be fine. I tried putting a riffa 55 on it and it seemed acceptable. The legs are aluminum but the collars are all plastic. Steel nuts, plastic covered steel thumbscrews (post is steel, knobs are plastic). For what it is, it's pretty decent. Not what you'd keep in the studio, but if you're doing air travel, it's great.

I've only used it once so far, but I was traveling to shoot a wedding and needed to bring some lighting gear with me. This fits perfectly in a carry-on suitcase and yet is still very durable and well-built.

Comments about Smith-Victor RS6 6' Aluminum Light Stand with 5/8" Top Mount:

I bought this as my first light stand and have been very happy with it. I have since borrowed two 6' Impact stands from a friend and decided that I like this Smith-Victor one more. I felt the Impact stands weren't as sturdy as this one, the clamps weren't as nice, and the sliding action of the sections didn't feel as smooth. Even the finish on the SV model was nicer.

I've gotten a lot of use out of mine in the year that I've had it, and it barely even shows a hint of wear.

If I need another 6' stand this will definitely be the one I buy.

It is worth noting that I primarily use this stand for speedlights and umbrellas. I feel that it would be sturdy enough to put some Alien Bees on it, but I haven't actually used it that way (yet).

Best stand for the price. Compact but very sturdy. I have this and an even more compact manfrotto portable. I like the sturdiness of this one much more, even though it's a little larger.
