This EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens from Canon is a standard length lens featuring superb quality and portability. Its f/1.4 maximum aperture makes it very effective in low light situations and able to provide shallow depth of field focus. Two high-refraction lens elements and new Gaussian optics eliminate astigmatism and suppress astigmatic difference. Its ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) enables fast, smooth and silent autofocus action and full-time manual focus override allows for the precision of manual focus even in One Shot AF mode.

Standard focal length 50mm lens is effective in a multitude of shooting situations and ideal for day-to-day shooting.
An f/1.4 maximum aperture provides clear imaging in low light situations and shallow depth of field.
Ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) operation is fast, smooth and virtually silent.

I bought this lens for the holidays to take pictures of our family and guests at each of our gatherings. I have a 50D and I take mostly sport shots. Indoor, non-moving targets are new to me. I have 3 kids that all play hockey and lacrosse so I have the 2.8 70-200 usm II and the 2.8 24-70 both L series and both incredible lenses. I didn't go for the 1.2L series because one of my friends is a professional wedding photographer and she knows people with both and found the difference slight. Please keep in mind when talking to my friend I was referring to non-professional use. It has done quite a nice job. I have been using it with a 580ex flash, so the pictures really do "pop". If you are in the market for a reliable, decent - indoor lens - I would recommend it. I have also taken some really nice sunset shots. The colors are very true. This lens is perfect for the price and the results. In this case - you may actually get a little more than you pay for...One thing - in low or filtered light, you better have a good flash, a tripod or a ridiculously steady hand - even at 1.4.

While the auto-focus of my copy was working well, this lens very rarely came off of my 50D. The Bokeh is beautiful, the soft focus and background blur around 1.4/1.8 is dreamy, and wonderful for child portraits.

Now that the AF motor is on the fritz I'm looking for a different lens that I can afford. I called a Canon Repair shop and was quoted $170.00 to replace the motor, and the guy said it was quite common...Just to have it go out again? No thanks!

Since my wife and I are still on crop sensors, I think I'll go with Sigma's 35mm 1.4, to get right around 50mm. I will keep this lens and use it manually, though if I had done more research and found that it had such issues, I would not have purchased. I love my AF.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens:

This is a great lens when shooting in low-light situations using available light or when isolating a subject using a shallow depth of field, thanks to its wide aperture. I purchased two of these for our photographers at our newspaper and they are used nearly every day and have proved to not only take great, sharp images but have withstood the normal abuse that comes with day-in, day-out use in the field.
I own the 50mm L f1.2 Canon lens, which costs significantly more, and I would not trade it for anything. But the f1.4 is a fine alternative that is a great value for the price.

I have the 50mm 1.8 and this lens is much better. I've looked at a lot of reviews that say the quality of the final image is the same, however this lens is made of better materials. I shoot video as well and the ring for manual focus really makes a difference.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens:

I've used this lens, the 1.8, and the 1.2 numerous times. The 1.2 L is an amazing lens, the 1.8 "Nifty Fifty" isn't worth anyones time. Unfortunately the 1.2 L costs an arm and a leg, and I don't believe is necessary unless your working big weddings, or big fancy jobs. This lens is only a bit more than the 1.8 and does a fantastic job. I borrowed one for a cross-country trip and then bought my own. It's sharp, fast, affordable and solid. I'd say buy it.

Great a product at very attractive price..! Very luminous lens, I´m not a pro so going for the f1/2 was too much for me. The f1/4 covers all of my needs.

The service at B&H was very helpful as always.

I'm a portrait photographer and I bought this lens when I upgraded to the Canon 5D Mark III. Previously I had used the 35 mm f/2.0 on my Rebel T3 and I love the beautiful bokeh from this lens. I almost regret my purchase of my 85 mm f/1.2.

I am a beginner photographer and i found that this is becoming one of my favorite lenses. The great thing is that the pictures come out beautiful and the price of the lens is not insane, like some other lenses can be. It is a great lens for portraits and beautiful closeups with a blurred background. If you are a beginner i suggest this lens.

This can be a great super sharp lens. I own the 50 1.2 ii L as well. But unfortunately I had some focusing issues with this one especially with subjects on the extreme sides. At time would just not focus, very challenging. But for the price and size is a great lens and can be just as sharp as the 1.2.

I bought this lens to use for my company's social media and inventory needs. So far I love it. It's a great compact size. I did a ton of research before buying this lens, comparing the f/1.8 to the f/1.4 and I am really happy with my decision. For a little extra money getting the f/1.4 seems totally worth it. So far my pictures have been amazing and I'm excited to keep using it!

I use it for portraits and low light uses, which it is pretty much made for. I like the 1.4 feature.

A fantastic standard lens. It creates incredilbe depth of field. So glad I have it, and will look to use it as often as possible when shooting.

I broke my first lens like this, and started using my wide angle lens. Needless to say, I think I was spoiled from the sharpness of my 50mm, because I went ahead and purchased another 50mm. Hands down, my favorite lens ever for the price! It's a shame that when my other fell out my bag in the yard, it broke. Will definitely be more careful!

I use this lens for personal use. I am a fine art photographer. I do a lot of portraits. I have been using a 50mm f/1.8 for several years it is really nice getting a set up. Also getting this lens at such a great price makes it that much better. Received the lens really quickly as well. Overall a great deal and awesome lens.
