Two high-refraction lens elements and new Gaussian optics eliminate astigmatism and suppress astigmatic difference. Its ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) enables fast, smooth and silent autofocus action and full-time manual focus override allows for the precision of manual focus even in One Shot AF mode.

I bought this lens for the holidays to take pictures of our family and guests at each of our gatherings. I have a 50D and I take mostly sport shots. Indoor, non-moving targets are new to me. I have 3 kids that all play hockey and lacrosse so I have the 2.8 70-200 usm II and the 2.8 24-70 both L series and both incredible lenses. I didn't go for the 1.2L series because one of my friends is a professional wedding photographer and she knows people with both and found the difference slight. Please keep in mind when talking to my friend I was referring to non-professional use. It has done quite a nice job. I have been using it with a 580ex flash, so the pictures really do "pop". If you are in the market for a reliable, decent - indoor lens - I would recommend it. I have also taken some really nice sunset shots. The colors are very true. This lens is perfect for the price and the results. In this case - you may actually get a little more than you pay for...One thing - in low or filtered light, you better have a good flash, a tripod or a ridiculously steady hand - even at 1.4.

While the auto-focus of my copy was working well, this lens very rarely came off of my 50D. The Bokeh is beautiful, the soft focus and background blur around 1.4/1.8 is dreamy, and wonderful for child portraits.

Now that the AF motor is on the fritz I'm looking for a different lens that I can afford. I called a Canon Repair shop and was quoted $170.00 to replace the motor, and the guy said it was quite common...Just to have it go out again? No thanks!

Since my wife and I are still on crop sensors, I think I'll go with Sigma's 35mm 1.4, to get right around 50mm. I will keep this lens and use it manually, though if I had done more research and found that it had such issues, I would not have purchased. I love my AF.

I love the lens so far. Still playing with it, but have gotten some really nice shots. The 1.4 aperture is very narrow and gives great background blur, but is going to take practice.

This is a great starter prime lens. Delivers amazing photos. Very impressive.

If you are short on funds, don't consider this one over the 1.8. This is essentially the same lens and the differences aren't worth the bump in price.

Using on a 7D crop sensor, great for portriats and candids in low light. Getting used to the fact that there is no IS. Not a problem as long as SS is at least 1/80 or more.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens:

I bought this lens so I could shoot video with my Canon 70D in low light and it works amazingly for that! Very little light is needed to get a clean noise-free image, though I don't recommend pushing it too far. On an APS-C sensor like the 70D the field of view is pretty tight, but not ridiculous. The bokeh is beautiful. A must-have lens in my opinion, money well spent. The only possible con is that the continuous autofocus when shooting video is pretty noisy and not as accurate as an STM lens, but for stationary subjects or if you're good at manual focus, the lens can't be beat.

I bought this product within the past 6 months, and I absolutely love it. I have a Canon 5D Mark ii, and this, so far, is the only lens I have used. It's lightweight and produces clear images. I would definitely recommend this lens over the 1/8, even if you must invest a little more. Hope to buy another lens similar to this one soon!

It wasn't until recently that I realized the power of photography, and the beauty it can display. For most people photography is either a hobby, or a profession. At first, photography was a hobby for me. Sense I've received this lens though, it's become my passion. This lens has the ability to make any subject stand out. This lens really does work wonders and is perfect for portrait shots.

The clarity at f/1.4 aperture is horrendous. It cleans up around f/2.8 to 5.6 but there are other economical lenses that get the same or better clarity at those apertures. I'd love my money back or to exchange for the 85mm f/1.8 with much better reviews.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens:

I love and have used this lens for many many years. It's produced beautiful results with portraits. There are some minor issues which can be annoying at times or you can work around them. Those this lens has a higher aperture it still performs poorly in low light situations. It has a very difficult time focussing and often takes awhile to lock in the focus point. Sometimes not at all. There needs to be ample light when using this lens for tack sharp images. The center focus point is really the only one you can rely on when you have a subject that is alive, breathing and/or moving. Though you can switch around to the outside focus points they will not work hardly at all in lower light. I find the sweet spot with portraits around the 2.2 and 2.8 mark. For closer headshots at 3.2 and 4.0 it performs wonderfully.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens:

This is a pretty killer lens for the price. I mainly use it to shoot portraits and I'm always blown away by it. Excellent sharpness (I usually stop it to 1.8), killer bokeh, some nice natural vignetting, and so on. Really for the price you can't go wrong.
