This EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens from Canon is a standard length lens featuring superb quality and portability. Its f/1.4 maximum aperture makes it very effective in low light situations and able to provide shallow depth of field focus. Two high-refraction lens elements and new Gaussian optics eliminate astigmatism and suppress astigmatic difference. Its ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) enables fast, smooth and silent autofocus action and full-time manual focus override allows for the precision of manual focus even in One Shot AF mode.

Standard focal length 50mm lens is effective in a multitude of shooting situations and ideal for day-to-day shooting.
An f/1.4 maximum aperture provides clear imaging in low light situations and shallow depth of field.

I bought this lens for the holidays to take pictures of our family and guests at each of our gatherings. I have a 50D and I take mostly sport shots. Indoor, non-moving targets are new to me. I have 3 kids that all play hockey and lacrosse so I have the 2.8 70-200 usm II and the 2.8 24-70 both L series and both incredible lenses. I didn't go for the 1.2L series because one of my friends is a professional wedding photographer and she knows people with both and found the difference slight. Please keep in mind when talking to my friend I was referring to non-professional use. It has done quite a nice job. I have been using it with a 580ex flash, so the pictures really do "pop". If you are in the market for a reliable, decent - indoor lens - I would recommend it. I have also taken some really nice sunset shots. The colors are very true. This lens is perfect for the price and the results. In this case - you may actually get a little more than you pay for...One thing - in low or filtered light, you better have a good flash, a tripod or a ridiculously steady hand - even at 1.4.

While the auto-focus of my copy was working well, this lens very rarely came off of my 50D. The Bokeh is beautiful, the soft focus and background blur around 1.4/1.8 is dreamy, and wonderful for child portraits.

Now that the AF motor is on the fritz I'm looking for a different lens that I can afford. I called a Canon Repair shop and was quoted $170.00 to replace the motor, and the guy said it was quite common...Just to have it go out again? No thanks!

Since my wife and I are still on crop sensors, I think I'll go with Sigma's 35mm 1.4, to get right around 50mm. I will keep this lens and use it manually, though if I had done more research and found that it had such issues, I would not have purchased. I love my AF.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens:

It is early days for me with this lens.I love the 50mm prime but regret slightly not having the money for a f/1.2 as the 1.4 is found wanting in lower light conditions.

In good light and with a flash for portraits results are excellent. It is a good lens for the price but not a great lens.

I used this lens on some quail under a bush on a cloudy day and was suprised at how bright the subjects appeared! I almost bought the f/1.8 but decided to go ahead and spend the extra money on the 1.4 and now I'm so glad I did. What a difference!

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens:

I had to return the first copy of this lens after a month. The focus ring locked up. The second copy works fine. B&H was gracious and let me exchange it even after the thirty time period was up since I was out of town on a shoot. Pretty bokeh, very fast. But the construction feels flimsy to me, after getting used to the build quality of the L series lenses. As a throw-away lens, it's not bad. And the price is right. But I'd be careful with it in an outdoor setting. Good for indoor, portraits, video use.

I love this lens because it is lightweight, wonderful low aperture with beautiful bokeh. On my crop sensor it is a bit more limiting, but love it nonetheless.

Purchased this lens a few weeks ago and absolutely love it. I shoot a lot in studio and this lens is super sharp when used for portrait work. Would not recommend it for street photographers however. Took it out one day and auto-focusing seemed a bit slow on my 5D Mark III. But overall I am very happy with the lens.

This is the second 50mm 1.4 I've had, and I absolutely love it. I sold my other one when I bought the 35mm 1.4 and after a while knew I needed to buy it again. I thought I would get the 1.2 but after thinking about it, knew I would save a ton of money getting this one again instead. It is consistent and I love it for portraits and weddings!

This lens is my first lens I've ever bought. Aside from my kit lens that came with my camera; which is a great lens too. But this prime lens is just a lot more sharper and the wide aperture really is just amazing; Bokeh is stunning as expected. A little bit plasticy and no weather sealing but you would expect that for the price The focusing system is a little bit slow, but I almost use manual every time anyways. Night/indoor shots are also superb. Overall its a really great lens for the price. I was looking at the L 1.2 lens but that is just too much for my budget right now. I think this lens is a great lens for starting photographers like me.

If you are short on funds, don't consider this one over the 1.8. This is essentially the same lens and the differences aren't worth the bump in price.

Soft images at wide aperture but it makes portraits look good anyways.

Using on a 7D crop sensor, great for portriats and candids in low light. Getting used to the fact that there is no IS. Not a problem as long as SS is at least 1/80 or more.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens:

I bought this lens so I could shoot video with my Canon 70D in low light and it works amazingly for that! Very little light is needed to get a clean noise-free image, though I don't recommend pushing it too far. On an APS-C sensor like the 70D the field of view is pretty tight, but not ridiculous. The bokeh is beautiful. A must-have lens in my opinion, money well spent. The only possible con is that the continuous autofocus when shooting video is pretty noisy and not as accurate as an STM lens, but for stationary subjects or if you're good at manual focus, the lens can't be beat.

This lens is really a solid deal. A good general purpose, walk-around lens. Not quite as nice as an L lens but a great bang for your buck. Performs well in low light and at a great price point.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens:

I bought this product within the past 6 months, and I absolutely love it. I have a Canon 5D Mark ii, and this, so far, is the only lens I have used. It's lightweight and produces clear images. I would definitely recommend this lens over the 1/8, even if you must invest a little more. Hope to buy another lens similar to this one soon!
