This Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Autofocus Lens is a standard lens featuring superb quality and portability. Two high-refraction lens elements and new Gaussian optics eliminate astigmatism and suppress astigmatic difference. Crisp images with little flare are obtained even at the maximum aperture.

I bought this lens for the holidays to take pictures of our family and guests at each of our gatherings. I have a 50D and I take mostly sport shots. Indoor, non-moving targets are new to me. I have 3 kids that all play hockey and lacrosse so I have the 2.8 70-200 usm II and the 2.8 24-70 both L series and both incredible lenses. I didn't go for the 1.2L series because one of my friends is a professional wedding photographer and she knows people with both and found the difference slight. Please keep in mind when talking to my friend I was referring to non-professional use. It has done quite a nice job. I have been using it with a 580ex flash, so the pictures really do "pop". If you are in the market for a reliable, decent - indoor lens - I would recommend it. I have also taken some really nice sunset shots. The colors are very true. This lens is perfect for the price and the results. In this case - you may actually get a little more than you pay for...One thing - in low or filtered light, you better have a good flash, a tripod or a ridiculously steady hand - even at 1.4.

While the auto-focus of my copy was working well, this lens very rarely came off of my 50D. The Bokeh is beautiful, the soft focus and background blur around 1.4/1.8 is dreamy, and wonderful for child portraits.
Now that the AF motor is on the fritz I'm looking for a different lens that I can afford. I called a Canon Repair shop and was quoted $170.00 to replace the motor, and the guy said it was quite common...Just to have it go out again? No thanks!
Since my wife and I are still on crop sensors, I think I'll go with Sigma's 35mm 1.4, to get right around 50mm. I will keep this lens and use it manually, though if I had done more research and found that it had such issues, I would not have purchased. I love my AF.

Wide aperture = very shallow depth of field + takes in plenty of light! This is my first lens purchase (besides the kit lens that came with my camera) and I am very pleased with the results so far. Search for Canon 50mm f/1.4 and you'll find tons of positive reviews and recommendations for this lens. Great for portraits, but I will primarily use this for video. The wide aperture helps bring in more light low light situations.

I'm loving this lens thus far, but I'm not as knowledgeable with trying different lenses. This is my second DSLR lens, the first came with the camera body.
I settled on this one from reading the reviews between the 1.4 and 1.8. I knew I was looking for a good 50mm. With that, I will say I like this lens much more than the one the camera body came with.
I like taking pictures and mostly use my camera when I'm traveling or for special occasions.

At first I wasn't sure what to think of the lens as this is my first prime. It has done nothing but grow on me though and I find myself not wanting to swap out for my tele anymore. Here are some interesting things I've learned.
1. The depth of field turns out to even narrower in the captured image than what I perceive through the lens... good for the most part. Just be careful.
2. Slower focusing than an L lens

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Autofocus Lens:
This lens is sharp, quick, and notorious for its flimsy build. Don't be surprised if yours doesn't last any longer than mine did.
On an APS-C body I got wonderful available-light travel portraits with gorgeous out-of-focus backgrounds, and stunning short-tele landscapes and city shots. After about two years, it stopped focusing. The repair cost half as much as the lens did. It worked fine ... for another year. Now it's broken again, on a trip of course. I do not baby my gear but neither am I a gorilla. All my other lenses, many with much more and harder use, are still fine.
It's a shame that Canon makes a lens at this fairly low price with great optics and cheesy mechanics. Why not a lens for $100 more with the same great optics and durable, reliable mechanics? I am not going to waste more money getting this one fixed, I don't want to buy another junky unreliable lens, and I don't have the money for the L glass. There is simply no Canon option for me now in this focal length and speed. I am now researching the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM, which unfortunately is bulkier and heavier, as a replacement.

This lens is great for portrait photography. I contemplated getting the cheapest version of the 50mm, but I'm definitely glad I went with the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM. Great bokeh! I think with most lenses, you have to learn the sweetness of them as you use them, and so far this lens has been wonderful. Took some getting used to the fixed focal length, but I love my Nifty Fifty! The autofocus is great, too.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Autofocus Lens:
The 50 1.4 is my go-to lens when I'm not sure what I will be shooting. For example, this is my lens when I run errands and I anticipate I may find something interesting to shoot along the way. It serves well as a portrait lens, architecture, low light, shallow depth of field and even as a landscape lens. I appreciate its light weight but it comes at the price of durability. I've never dropped this lens but I suspect it would suffer noticeable damage if it fell even a short distance. The lens doesn't rattle or anything but it always feels vaguely "loose" for some reason I can't put my finger on. I've owned at least a dozen different L lenses and they are a considerable step up in build quality compared to the 50 1.4. I considered the 50L but after comparing literally hundreds and hundreds of different images I concluded that as far as image quality goes, the 50 1.4 is equal to the 50L. The fact that the 50L seems to be plagued with focus issues just made the decisioni that much easier. The only reason I would purchase the 50L is for the build quality. The 50 1.4 is slightly soft at f1.4. I generally shoot at f2 (where the lens is very sharp) and only shoot at f1.4 if I am specifically trying to achieve the thinnest DOF possible (like shooting a blade of grass). The focus ring is functional but I feel no joy in using it. It's plasticky and has very poor user feedback. In contrast, I have enjoyed the smooth manual focus rings of 20+ year old Olympus Zuiko lenses as well as Leica lenses.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Autofocus Lens:
When first buying this product I read ever review available.. I've used the L series 50mm canon lens before and it was fantastic.. Tack sharp, fast, and just beautiful. Honestly, the reason I didn't buy it is just I couldn't spend the money at that point. This however, is an incredible second option. I use it primarily as my "wide angle" lens in my kit. Yes, I know it's not wide angle but my preferred lenses are my 100mm macro and my 85mm, both canon. I would have to say the thing I intensely love about this lens is that when it's sharp, it's TACK, and when you are opened up wide, (2.8 and below) it creates an incredibly luminous and etherial background. i can't stop using it.
The few cons that i've found is that it lacks a bit of contrast that I find in my 100macro as well as focusing quickness and image quality once you start bumping up the ISO past 1000. However, it's what I expected. The macro being the L series it's hard to compare. This however I find does not at all hold me back from creating beautiful imagery. If I need more contrast it's so easy to add that in post processing as well as for events where I need higher ISO I always rent lenses if I don't feel the performance will be satisfactory for my assignment with the kit I have.
All in all I'm beyond happy with my purchase. I use it constantly in my photography business (family, engagements, couples, outside events, etc.) I would absolutely recommend this lens to a friend, an amateur as well as a professional.
Ah, and one other thing that I was quite worried about when reading the reviews was the durability. When you first start using the lens it's not as well built on the outside as a more expensive option however I find that this doesn't effect my ways of photographing at all. I'm super careful with my lenses (as you should be) and have never worried about it breaking. In fact, it's quite nice to have a lighter lens to use while traveling or during longer photo sessions/events. Again, I couldn't be happier.

Although I wasn't impressed with the manual focus ring at first, the autofocus is quick and effective. The real beauty of this lens is when you stop it down and get close, the in focus is sharp as a tack and the bokeh just melts away from there. Perfect for infants and young ones. I'm glad I got this. There's no other way to get this image quality for this price. If you can work with 50mm fixed focal length, go for it!
