Recently bought a T3i that came with the 18-55mm kit lens. I read a lot of reviews and decided I needed a nifty Fifty. it was well worth it. I use my 50mm now more than the kit lens. the bokeh(background blur) is amazing, and the speed of this thing is awesome. At f/1.8 you won't miss a shot again. This lens is incredibly fast compared to the kit lens. I never knew what I was missing till I bought this. And for around 100 bucks it's a nice addition to your lens collection. It's almost a necessity, almost ever photographer owns a nifty fifty.Be aware when buying this, you will not be able to zoom at all, I own both kit lens, the 18-55mm as well as the 55-250mm telephoto. But out of those, the 50mm is on my camera 90% of the time. The photos are that great! It takes excellent portraits. Some of the more professionals around here may complain about this lens, fair enough. but if your just starting out, and like me, came from a point & shoot to this, you will find this lens more than adequate. I review my shots and see nothing wrong with them, in fact family and friends have asked me to get some prints for them.As for the plastic casing, I don't find it all that bad, after all, aren't most of our cameras made of plastic? I'm not taking photos with it in a warzone, so as long as you treat it properly it will be fine. It's a worthy investment, you'll love the photos you get with it, so buy it now!

I'm gonna average my rating between the 2 lenses that I got. I know that it's a QC issue, but hey, that's what the average star rating is for.The first one has serious front element play, and that makes AF totally unusable (think 9/10 shots out of focus at f/2.8).Returned that one. The 2nd one I got was amazing. On a 600D crop body, sharpness is consistently good from edge to edge. Pentagonal bokeh is not very nice, but the wide aperture allows for custom-shaped bokeh, so not really an issue. The real problem is the almost unusable manual focus ring. Even though this lens doesn't have the front-element play anymore, AF is spotty at wide aperture. Forget about focus-recompose. Your best bet is to use live view, zoom in, then AF.Not the best-built lens out there, but hey, for $ you get high-quality glass. If you're thinking of upgrading from the 18-55 kit lens, besides a longer tele-zoom, this is seriously to be considered. If you're on a tight budget but want to upgrade from kit lens, no reason not to get this one.

I bought this lens to have something versatile and so I don't have to carry around my backpack with 3 other lenses. Even though this focal length doesn't cover the one in my other lenses, I find this lens to really stimulate yourself to zoom with your feet. The quality that you get for this price is amazing. I should've bough this as my first non-stock lens. I don't know why I didn't. Finally I have a somewhat fast lens in my arsenal for low light situations and when I really want to blow out the background!

Purchased my first Canon body the 7D Mark I and this lens was on my first list of purchase because its an awesome prime lens for the one the price (what a steal compared to Nikon 50mm f/1.8g $100 off difference) Colors are almost just natural and I recommend it to anyone starting off or going professional.

This lens works great for getting that super blurred background and taking detail shots of decor, interiors and portraits. Love the distance from the subject for photographing portraits and going down to 1.8 allows you to shoot in lower light with less grain. I have purchased two of these for our company and am very satisfied.

I cant really express how good of a $ investment this lens is. It offers a lot of artistic flexibility and much needed speed for low light photography. I have found PLENTY of opportunities to use this lens, and it costs 1/6 as much as my primary workhorse lens (12-20mm f/4-5.6 wide angle sigma) for Real Estate Photography. As far as the construction its pretty solid, go Canon.Only CON is that sometimes it is slow to autofocus in med-low light but it may be my camera's fault... anyways its great in manual too.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens:

First experience with a prime lens and it's fantastic! I mostly take pictures indoors of my family, and this is a great use for this lens. First time I put it on the camera, autofocus didn't seem to work, but must not have gotten something quite right, because upon removing it and reattaching, it's fine.

This lens is wonderful! I am always looking for greater depth of field and interest in my photos and have had this lens recommended many times. I was finally able to make the investment & am thrilled with it! It's helping me capture the images I have been going for but not able to get for a long time.
