Recently bought a T3i that came with the 18-55mm kit lens. I read a lot of reviews and decided I needed a nifty Fifty. it was well worth it. I use my 50mm now more than the kit lens. the bokeh(background blur) is amazing, and the speed of this thing is awesome. At f/1.8 you won't miss a shot again. This lens is incredibly fast compared to the kit lens. I never knew what I was missing till I bought this. And for around 100 bucks it's a nice addition to your lens collection. It's almost a necessity, almost ever photographer owns a nifty fifty.Be aware when buying this, you will not be able to zoom at all, I own both kit lens, the 18-55mm as well as the 55-250mm telephoto. But out of those, the 50mm is on my camera 90% of the time. The photos are that great! It takes excellent portraits. Some of the more professionals around here may complain about this lens, fair enough. but if your just starting out, and like me, came from a point & shoot to this, you will find this lens more than adequate. I review my shots and see nothing wrong with them, in fact family and friends have asked me to get some prints for them.As for the plastic casing, I don't find it all that bad, after all, aren't most of our cameras made of plastic? I'm not taking photos with it in a warzone, so as long as you treat it properly it will be fine. It's a worthy investment, you'll love the photos you get with it, so buy it now!

I'm gonna average my rating between the 2 lenses that I got. I know that it's a QC issue, but hey, that's what the average star rating is for.The first one has serious front element play, and that makes AF totally unusable (think 9/10 shots out of focus at f/2.8).Returned that one. The 2nd one I got was amazing. On a 600D crop body, sharpness is consistently good from edge to edge. Pentagonal bokeh is not very nice, but the wide aperture allows for custom-shaped bokeh, so not really an issue. The real problem is the almost unusable manual focus ring. Even though this lens doesn't have the front-element play anymore, AF is spotty at wide aperture. Forget about focus-recompose. Your best bet is to use live view, zoom in, then AF.Not the best-built lens out there, but hey, for $ you get high-quality glass. If you're thinking of upgrading from the 18-55 kit lens, besides a longer tele-zoom, this is seriously to be considered. If you're on a tight budget but want to upgrade from kit lens, no reason not to get this one.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens:

The shallow depth of field will amaze you. I use it mainly for Food Photography and sometimes for People Photography. Wide aperture makes hand holding possible in low lights without bumping up the ISO. Now I am free to move around the table and take a shot without Tripod.
The only issue, I faced is, since I was used to IS (Image Stabilization) feature during hand-holding and this lens is not having it, I feel the difference in some shots, wherein when I was not holding too steady, full sharpness was missing. (Let me re-iterate - this issue is only when I was not holding it steady). A beautiful addition to my bag and the Go To lens for my indoor photography.

I got this lens for shooting stills and video. It offers good shallow depth in tight spaces. Not the best for auto focus shooting but it's hard to beat for the price and it travels very well. For the average or beginner shooter, you can't go wrong.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens:

I was looking for an inexpensive lens to add to my equipment, and this one fit the bill. Inexpensive, super light weight and has great bokeh! I'm used to my kit lenses, and the ability to zoom, but on this one all zooming is done with the feet....which I have absolutely no problem with. It just takes a little getting used to. I would say it is a definite must for your bag o'stuff. I felt reassured in my purchase by reading all of the wonderful reviews. So glad I got it....actually, I bought two of them. One for me and one for my husband. He loves it too.

Why I choose to buy this lens

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens:

I wanted to get a more cinematic look into my films so I researched a little. The more I looked into it, the more it seems that these types of lenses are the ones I should get, and so I bought this. B&H pack it pretty safe. When this came in, I was so excited that I made a unboxing video, and that should be uploaded soon. ((-----)) I recently used it to record a Doritos commercial for the contest. I found that I got the image I was looking for. The forcus can blurr out the backgrounds very well. Although there is only one negative to this lens, it cannot zoom in. But that's fine as long as you plan ahead. I recommend buying it if you are buying for the first time!

Just got a chance to take this out shooting and was fairly impressed.

AF isn't blazing fast but is accurate. Great DOF.

The lens does have a fair bit of vignetting but nothing that can't be easily fixed in post.

If you are looking for a 50mm and don't want to spend a chunk of cash this is a very good option.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens:

Utilizo este lente para mi clase de fotografía y resulta muy conveniente para distintos tipos de escenarios. Obviamente hay que tener en cuenta el estilo de fotografía que buscas y en que escenario lo vas a utilizar. No pretendas utilizarlo como un lente de 35mm o 22mm. Es muy bueno en escenarios de poca luz y para portraits. Las únicas cosa que no me gustan de este lente es que es de plástico y no tiene estabilizador de imagen. Tienes que tener mucha cuenta con no dejarlo caer.

I use it mainly for macro and street in low-light or at night. With my 7D it's about 80mm.

                  The good:
                  > It's very compact and weighs almost nothing, so I like taking it with me when I know there's going to be crowds or I would be out and about for a couple of hours.
                  > It's bright, and gives nice bokeh
                  > It's CHEAP :)

                  The not-so-good:
                  > It's a little slow focusing in low light
                  > The manual focus ring is too narrow and awkwardly placed

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens:

I gave it 4 stars and not 5 because even thou it works perfectly it's very lightweight and almost toy like with the hard plastic shell. I have a canon SL1 and it is by far the lightest camera with a lens attached.

Love this lens for headshot/interviewing. It's essential for that soft focus background effect and crystal clear image of what's in the foreground. A must have for sure!

It will open a world of possibilities at a super low price point. yes, it is cheap and made of plastic but if you are using it to take family pics and to be creative you will love it...
