Recently bought a T3i that came with the 18-55mm kit lens. I read a lot of reviews and decided I needed a nifty Fifty. it was well worth it. I use my 50mm now more than the kit lens. the bokeh(background blur) is amazing, and the speed of this thing is awesome. At f/1.8 you won't miss a shot again. This lens is incredibly fast compared to the kit lens. I never knew what I was missing till I bought this. And for around 100 bucks it's a nice addition to your lens collection. It's almost a necessity, almost ever photographer owns a nifty fifty.Be aware when buying this, you will not be able to zoom at all, I own both kit lens, the 18-55mm as well as the 55-250mm telephoto. But out of those, the 50mm is on my camera 90% of the time. The photos are that great! It takes excellent portraits. Some of the more professionals around here may complain about this lens, fair enough. but if your just starting out, and like me, came from a point & shoot to this, you will find this lens more than adequate. I review my shots and see nothing wrong with them, in fact family and friends have asked me to get some prints for them.As for the plastic casing, I don't find it all that bad, after all, aren't most of our cameras made of plastic? I'm not taking photos with it in a warzone, so as long as you treat it properly it will be fine. It's a worthy investment, you'll love the photos you get with it, so buy it now!

I'm gonna average my rating between the 2 lenses that I got. I know that it's a QC issue, but hey, that's what the average star rating is for.The first one has serious front element play, and that makes AF totally unusable (think 9/10 shots out of focus at f/2.8).Returned that one. The 2nd one I got was amazing. On a 600D crop body, sharpness is consistently good from edge to edge. Pentagonal bokeh is not very nice, but the wide aperture allows for custom-shaped bokeh, so not really an issue. The real problem is the almost unusable manual focus ring. Even though this lens doesn't have the front-element play anymore, AF is spotty at wide aperture. Forget about focus-recompose. Your best bet is to use live view, zoom in, then AF.Not the best-built lens out there, but hey, for $ you get high-quality glass. If you're thinking of upgrading from the 18-55 kit lens, besides a longer tele-zoom, this is seriously to be considered. If you're on a tight budget but want to upgrade from kit lens, no reason not to get this one.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens:

This lens is great, very easy to use and very great in low light conditions. A must have for sure. The only complaint I have is that the manual focus ring is jumpy, it is hard to smoothly focus with one finger. using 2 works alright, but it is very thin near the front of the lens. I would love it if it was as smooth as the kit lens 18-55mm it came with.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens:

I use the Canon EF 50mm for my Canon Rebel T3i and it works like a dream. I mainly use it during family get-togethers and for taking photos of my artwork. The portraits of the family are fantastic, grabbing photos of my 8-month-old niece (who moves around quite a bit)like a charm. Low lighting is not at all a problem, and for a 50mm, this lens has a pretty great focus range.
The focusing is pretty smooth, and the 1.8/f bokeh really let's the subject pop.
All in all, this is a great lens that's on the less expensive side: it's reliable, lightweight, and crystal clear.

I've used this lens at night with no flash and it takes really good photos. If there isn't enough light, focus is slow but then what lens isn't. I'm glad I purchased this lens and can't wait to use it more.

I have not yet used it, but have put it on my camera body several times and its great. What's awesome about it is it's weight. Extremely lightweight and small. I haven't found anything I don't like about it yet considering I have not used it that much. Overall for the money this is an excellent addition to any beginner or pro's camera equipment.

Perfect for a starter's kit, the 50mm is a must-have. Wouldn't recommend it for professional work, though. It's focus is a little slow, and the body construction feels too fragile for hard work. But for students and enthusiast it's perfect. Also, it doesn't have any Image Stabilizing System.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens:

I got my first 35mm SLR in 1968 and it came with a 50mm, f1.4 lens. Since that time I've owned many cameras and lenses but none that were as fast. When I saw the price and speed of this lens I jumped at the opportunity. A review, from another source, said it was as sharp as L glass but the focus was a bit slow and noisy (not a problem) and the Bokeh was not as nice as some (I can live with that). I've used this lens mostly for nature photography and find that it performs very well, produces a nice sharp image and the added speed is a great benefit.

This lens sure is awesome. Although the autofocus is really slow and complete rubbish. Overall, if you're happy running Manual Focus, which I prefer. You will be very happy with this purchase.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens:

Im an amatuer photographer and before I bought a 50mm I was using the 18-55 kit lens.
I couldnt believe the all round improvement on my photos not only because of the large aperture but also the pristine image quality of a prime lens. I opted now for the more expensive f1.4 because autofocus is more silent on my videos but the 1.8 is just as great image wise
