I bought this mostly to use as a 50mm prime. I mostly use zoom lenses because of their more variable range and it has been cheaper to get zooms then replace tons of primes since I have gone from film to digital. I wanted to get a 50mm prime but I wanted something more rugged and better quality then the 50mm (nifty fifty) lens. I also didn't want to spend an arm and a leg for another 'L' glass so I went with this. The quality is wonderful. It is not an 'L' glass but it still feels nice. It is a good weight and is a fun lens to use. Unlike zooms, with a prime you need to be more creative with your framing and you need to actually move around to find a nice shot. The macro is not true 1:1 macro but I am a landscape shooter so this is not a big deal. I have had some fun playing around with the 'macro' feature and the photos it can produce have been amazing. With a set of extension tubes you can get even closer to the subject. There is a 1:1 converter you can use but this is a waste in my opinion because you will lose light and the cost of the lens and adapter combined is almost the same cost of the 100mm 1:1 macro from canon. So if you want a true 1:1 macro with a better auto focus then go with that. But for my purpose of wanting a 50mm prime and something to take close up photos this was a good investment.

The autofocus is noisy but who uses autofocus when doing macro? The manual focus ring feels sturdy but not as smooth as an 'L' lens. There is a little play with the manual focus ring, allowing you to wiggle it a little but i suspect if you treat your equipment right (I baby mine) this should not be a problem.

All in all, this is a good quality lens and I have been able to get professional quality results with mine in the short time I have owned it. I shot a sunset the other day with this and was able to get tack sharp detail on the contrast edges of black and red between sky and a grain silo. The individual struts holding a grain elevator up were nearly tack sharp and this was without the use of a tripod or monopod at f8... and the silo was over 3/4 of a mile away. So this lens packs a lot of punch for the price. For closeup work, bokeh is pretty good and although I don't shoot portraiture, I would imagine this lens would work well with these too.

Only negatives I have found are that the lens does have some rather bad chromatic aberration wide open on high contrast areas (like dark leaves and a bright sky). Of course this can easily be corrected in photoshop as long as the area it occurs is not the main focal point of your photo but this was a little disappointing, however I already knew about this issue before buying. This can be a problem with the landscapes I shoot but as long as I keep this problem in the back of my mind, I can either switch lenses or change my position so this is kept to a minimum. Unlike 'L' glass, this does not come with a lens hood but you do not need it. If you are like me and keep a UV on your lenses to protect your investment, just take it off for a few minutes when shooting in high sunlight and the recessed front element will be shaded by the 'built in' lens hood.

Overall I am very happy. This is a middle of the line lens - A step up from the nifty fifty and a step down from the 'L'.

At f/2.5 sharpness in the centre is already excellent, and the quality towards the edges approaches good levels. Stopping the lens down improves sharpness across the frame until f/5.6, where the clarity exceeds excellent levels from edge to edge.Light and compact, it functions beautifully as a general-purpose normal lens. The optional accessory Life Size Converter EF enables focusing down to life size (1:1), and actually increases working distance - very desireable in close-up shooting

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Lens:

Lighter, not as ruggedly built or as tight a construction, but a great value for macro photography where 50mm is ideal. Great lens to have if and when needed. No lens shade is included- and I can live with that- but it would have been nice.

I've had great success with this lens so far, especially for ring shots at weddings. It's accurate and tack sharp when used correctly and at a quarter of the price of the 100mm macro it's quite the bargain.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Lens:

I bought this lens along with the life size converter for use on my full-frame 6D. It's extremely sharp and I am very happy with the output. I was not very happy with the sharpness of my old Canon 50mm 1.8. So this new combination gives me a replacement for that as well as a macro, for less than the price of the Canon 100mm macro.

I've mostly used this lens to shoot detailed shots of plants and flowers, but I've also used it to shoot snow as well. As I'm just starting out in photography I can't give the best review, but I don't think there's anything negative that I could say about the lens. I feel as though it's worth the price, and now I want to upgrade to another. :)

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Lens:

A Photographer/Professor introduced me to the fixed focal length lens. I have been interested in one for years but never took the plunge. After careful and lengthy research I finally decided to take the plunge and chose this lens. It combined the 50mm that I found would be most beneficial for my use with the ability of macro which was another lens I had been contemplating for years.

This, so far, seems to be a very sturdy, easy to use lens. I haven't been able to use it as much as I had planned since receiving it, due to illness. I managed to dabble a bit here and there when first opening it and managed to get some interesting shots. (sample photos included) I can't wait to get back on my feet and hit the ground running to test this lens further.

Overall, I have no complaints and am most pleased with my investment.

This has been a great Macro. It is fast, goes 1:1 and also takes pretty good pictures as a solid 50mm prime. It might not be as nice optics as some of the pricier 50mm's, but if you need a macro, it is certainly suitable to use so you don't have to buy two.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Lens:

This lens is so good that it makes me wonder why I have always saved up for an "L" series lens. It's as sharp as other reviewers claim, and lightweight to boot. Hooray for Canon.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Lens:

I have the 100 mm macro, and it is very good if you can get far enough away from the subject of get it all in. The 50 mm gives me a wider FOV when I need it. I don't see a need for the "extension" that makes it a full 1:1 macro, because I can use the 100 mm macro for that.
The image quality is very good for the 50 mm macro.
It all depends on your needs, this lens was good for me.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Lens:

I'm really pleased I bought this macro lens. There are some less expensive macro options (filters, extensions) but a macro lens is necessary to provide adequate depth of field photos. The compact size and light weight are a nice bonus. The flexible plastic focus ring at first concerned me, but it appears to be well built. I found that manual focus mode worked best for me.

I am so glad I bought this lens because the 1:1 ratio is real and prints are beautiful. I used it during the holidays for ornaments on a tree. Stunning, the tree was sparkling & the shot came out clear. You get more for the money with this lens!

This lens is great for the amount of money is it, it is sharp and efficient but you have to use manual on it sometimes because it won't focus all the way
