I bought this mostly to use as a 50mm prime. I mostly use zoom lenses because of their more variable range and it has been cheaper to get zooms then replace tons of primes since I have gone from film to digital. I wanted to get a 50mm prime but I wanted something more rugged and better quality then the 50mm (nifty fifty) lens. I also didn't want to spend an arm and a leg for another 'L' glass so I went with this. The quality is wonderful. It is not an 'L' glass but it still feels nice. It is a good weight and is a fun lens to use. Unlike zooms, with a prime you need to be more creative with your framing and you need to actually move around to find a nice shot. The macro is not true 1:1 macro but I am a landscape shooter so this is not a big deal. I have had some fun playing around with the 'macro' feature and the photos it can produce have been amazing. With a set of extension tubes you can get even closer to the subject. There is a 1:1 converter you can use but this is a waste in my opinion because you will lose light and the cost of the lens and adapter combined is almost the same cost of the 100mm 1:1 macro from canon. So if you want a true 1:1 macro with a better auto focus then go with that. But for my purpose of wanting a 50mm prime and something to take close up photos this was a good investment.
The autofocus is noisy but who uses autofocus when doing macro? The manual focus ring feels sturdy but not as smooth as an 'L' lens. There is a little play with the manual focus ring, allowing you to wiggle it a little but i suspect if you treat your equipment right (I baby mine) this should not be a problem.
All in all, this is a good quality lens and I have been able to get professional quality results with mine in the short time I have owned it. I shot a sunset the other day with this and was able to get tack sharp detail on the contrast edges of black and red between sky and a grain silo. The individual struts holding a grain elevator up were nearly tack sharp and this was without the use of a tripod or monopod at f8... and the silo was over 3/4 of a mile away. So this lens packs a lot of punch for the price. For closeup work, bokeh is pretty good and although I don't shoot portraiture, I would imagine this lens would work well with these too.
Only negatives I have found are that the lens does have some rather bad chromatic aberration wide open on high contrast areas (like dark leaves and a bright sky). Of course this can easily be corrected in photoshop as long as the area it occurs is not the main focal point of your photo but this was a little disappointing, however I already knew about this issue before buying. This can be a problem with the landscapes I shoot but as long as I keep this problem in the back of my mind, I can either switch lenses or change my position so this is kept to a minimum. Unlike 'L' glass, this does not come with a lens hood but you do not need it. If you are like me and keep a UV on your lenses to protect your investment, just take it off for a few minutes when shooting in high sunlight and the recessed front element will be shaded by the 'built in' lens hood.
Overall I am very happy. This is a middle of the line lens - A step up from the nifty fifty and a step down from the 'L'.

This lens is good if are shooting anything with a tripod. Using this lens handheld I noticed it doesn't hold Its focus half the time. It also takes a while for it to find the focus. But I only have used it for close ups of objects like guitars and everyday items. If you're on a tripod it should be fine.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Autofocus Lens:
Like all the prvious posts say it has a slightly noisy focusing motor but this is because we have become used to those super quiet USMs. It is not outrageously noisy and it still quick to get there. You also have to get really close if you want to approach 1:2 images reproduction but if you are going to use strobes to add light to your subject that is not too much of an issue. But it is pin sharp lightweight and a useful lens espsicially if you are shotting using a cropped sensor. For the money you cannot beat it.

this gets 5 stars because it's super cheap not because it's the best 50mm ever made but it works for me. I like it, it's sharp and when needed you can just start shooting macro. I'm using it to shoot paintings and artwork because it has very little distortion. Great buy for the cash.

I'm a pro videographer and we use the 5D M3's and M2's mainly. We do a lot of technology and healthcare work with the need to get great shots of tiny devices, syringes, etc. This does that for a great price point. Especially good for clients that don't want to pay the extra rental fee for a Zeiss Compact Prime 50 macro.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Autofocus Lens:
This may be the best value in the EF lineup. I've gotten consistently sharp focus, very little geometric distortion and so far absolutely no chromatic aberration. Yes, it has the old autofocus motor, so it's a bit noisy. I don't care! I've shot this on my 5D Mark III. Needs NO microfocus adjustment.
According to Ken Rockwell, this lens is every bit as sharp as the 1.2L, and I believe it.
Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Autofocus Lens:
Great lens for product and things that are stationary. It does not focus well on moving objects. Do not use for anything but stationary objects as you will not succeed.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Autofocus Lens:
I use this lens as a lightweight prime when I don't want to have to carry around my zooms. The best thing about it is that it's lightweight - and although the body has a definite plastic feel it doesn't feel flimsy. The image quality - of course - is great! The macro function is terrific but I have to learn how to utilise the depth of field drop-off better to get photos I'm really happy with. I don't use the autofocus function: too noisy and slow for me. I just like using it in manual anyway: reminds me of my student days when all I had to shoot with was a manual 50mm (and camera!).

This lens was a gift for my brother who is just getting into photography. He is able to do more things and really discover if photography is his thing without having to spend 800 plus dollars on a 100mm macro lens. We are very happy with the lens and, as always, very happy to buy from B&H

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Autofocus Lens:
As I have a small studio - about 3.5m x 3.5m square - I wanted a couple of good fast lenses that allow me to work close to the subject and take 'head & shoulder shots', 'half-body shots,' and 'three-quarter boduy shots'. This 50mm Compact MACRO F/2.8 lens produces a very sharp image; and allows me to do three-quarter body shots. It has a good build - for the price. Only minor 'issue' - not a problem - I note is that the focus is slow and very noisy when compared to say the Canon EF 85mm F/1.8 lens. But the images are very sharp. You may need a lens that focuses faster and is more quiet if your subject circumstances require it. Use manual focus to get around the slow focus.
I gave it a rating of 4 instead of 5 stars only because of the slow noisy focussing mechanism.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Autofocus Lens:
At f/2.5 sharpness in the centre is already excellent, and the quality towards the edges approaches good levels. Stopping the lens down improves sharpness across the frame until f/5.6, where the clarity exceeds excellent levels from edge to edge.Light and compact, it functions beautifully as a general-purpose normal lens. The optional accessory Life Size Converter EF enables focusing down to life size (1:1), and actually increases working distance - very desireable in close-up shooting

My daughter is working towards her Masters in Fine Arts and Photography, this lens is a superb addition giving her the ability to photograph small subjects. The lens itself as she describes works for her in every way. Having versatility in shooting reference work is extremely important and Canon products are well made and perform up to their specifications.

nothing against this lens, it's not what I thought it would be. I did research and did not realize the image samples seen where takin with this lens and other products used together with this lens. Will be exchanging this for the 100mm macro lens

I wanted a prime, dedicated macro. I've had this lens for a few months and what has been said in the other reviews holds pretty much true. Here's the problem: I thought I would have some kind of a leap forward in macro photos. I have a 18-135 Canon that has a macro function. I compared the two lenses on macro and 50mm. Virtually the same other than the 50mm macro can produce a slightly larger image close up. If you have a 18-135mm Canon you don't need this lens. Other lenses in your collection with macro may bear a look if you are thinking of a dedicated, prime macro.

This lens is a great value. I use it for product photography, mostly flat paper invitations & envelopes. The only major downside for me is that this lens has no image stabilization. As others have mentioned, it is pretty noisy when focusing, but it doesn't get in my way. Overall I'm very happy!
