The EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens from Canon is a highly practical medium telephoto prime lens ideal for a range of applications including portraiture. Its fast f/1.8 maximum aperture is effective in low light and ideal for shallow depth of field focus control. An ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) provides fast, smooth and quiet AF action and because the front lens group does not rotate during focusing, polarizing and special filter effects can be used effectively.

Fast Maximum Aperture
A bright f/1.8 maximum aperture makes this lens a good choice for low-light photography and provides shallow depth of field control, ideal for portraiture with pleasing background blur.
Ultrasonic Autofocus Motor
With an ultrasonic motor (USM), the autofocus action on this lens is fast, smooth and quiet.

This lens is so sharp it hurts (the models of course). It's definitely sharper than my Canon 50mm 1.2L and that thing cost me 3 times the price. This baby's light, focuses really quickly and quietly and has a terrific build (plenty good, unless you're going to subject your lens to the very extreme warlike scenario). Not too expensive. The bokeh is superb too. Focus ring just stiff enough for comfy video focus pulls. Couldn't, even if I tried, come up with a single reason why the wad of cash in your safe is any better than this little glass beauty. Get it whenever you can afford it. I own four L-Lenses and this one just outdid every single one of them in image quality.

I bought this prime mainly for portrait and close up of people/animals/objects. The lens is very fast and light, the assembly is of good quality and overall is a good bang for your bucks (in the range of $400-$450). I'm really happy about its sharpness and it's very fun to use, the colors of the subjects are nice and the contrast is perfect. Overall, a good lens and it gives all you would expect from it.
What it really disappoints me is a very bad purple fringing and a very bad chromatic aberration around small details, particularly in high contrast and high luminosity situations. They say that stepping the aperture helps reducing these well-known defects, but as far as I can say, they are still annoying up to f4.0 in a consistent number of pictures, so this is an annoying defect that spoils the evaluation what is, apart from that, an excellent lens. I'm happy of the purchase, but there is margin of improvement.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I have previously used the 100L, 35L, and 17-40L canon lenses. This lens is optically as good as any of my L lenses at half the price. Light, fast focusing, and wonderful for both portraits and my landscape work. Will disuade you from being an "L" snob.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

Don't be fooled by the price-tag of this lens. The quality is superb. With most products and industries, a direct correlation between price and quality is marketed. However, as a consumer, sometimes it is best to test this relationship for yourself (or research trustworthy, technical reviews). In this case, the 85mm f/1.8 lens is a gem. The only knock against the lens is the 'L' ruggedness, but, for a savings of $ over the f/1.2, you can afford to take the risk. I highly recommend this lens for most practical uses. High-quality. Excellent images. Reliable functionality. You will not be disappointed.

This lense is absolutely one of the best portrait lense. The images come out sharp and crisp. Since the highest aperature is 1.8 it works well with low light conditions and gives that creamy bokeh look. Highly suggest this lense for anyone who is into portrait photography!

This is a great lens. I use it for many things including portraits and landscapes. It is sharp and focuses quickly. It may not be as sturdy as the higher priced L series lenses, but it is definitely not cheaply made by any standard. It serves it's purpose and serves it well. I feel that I have definitely gotten my monies worth and I would recommend this lens to a friend.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

f/1.8 allows you to shoot in moderate indoor ambient light with a narrow focal plane depth of only a inch. My first use was of my newest granddaughter indoors. The focal plane is so shallow only her eyes and nose were in focus while the ears were slightly out and the background had a pleasing bokeh. This lens forces you to keep your distance though, as anything closer than 6-7 feet cannot be resolved, but then it's a portrait lens and not a macro. The best part is this lens ability to give clear, sharp images with only existing light allowing a more natural interaction with the subject, whereas a flash or bright lighting would be disruptive. This is especially true with babies as they can't understand all the bright flashy lights and the big black blob shoved in their face.

The clarity and ability to shoot wide open at f1.8 makes this a great lens for studio portraits with great control of the depth in your photos. depending on your sensor size you will have either 85mm (full frame) or about 135mm (cropped sensor), both of which are great focal lengths for portraits. The build quality feels very substantial and solid. The focus ring does not extend out from the lens making it much easier to use a tulip type lens hood.

I needed a lens for low light indoor sports - my 70-200 L and my 100/2.8 non-L were close but not enough . I took a chance on the 85/1.8 and it delivered both on my 7d and 6d ( I know most wouldn't use a 6d for sports but that center point works great ) and the organizer raved about the action fotos .

                            Heartily recommended

Great lens! super fast, great color, only thing I would recommend is a good lens hood, there is some weird colors in the lens flaring. but thats easily fixed. The auto focus is little slow in low light, but I am spoiled with my nicer lenses.

This lens is another secret in Canon's arsenal of fast, sharp lenses. I use it mostly for indoor sports (basketball) and it achieves sharp, action-freezing shots for me. So glad I purchased this one!

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I'm a videographer. and this lens is a must have, especially for old school discipline. If you're the type (like me) that thinks variable lenses don't make the cut the same way fixed lens do, this is an excellent lens, particularly if you can't afford the next step up which is the L series 85 mm (which is $ more!). I've only had it for a couple weeks, but it rounds out my core lens lengths of 28, 50, and 85. At f/1.8 as well, this is an amazing light capability. I've even used the lens for photos, and it's pretty solid there (although I'm not a sports photographer so the shutter speed may not be the fastest for that).
