The EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens from Canon is a highly practical medium telephoto prime lens ideal for a range of applications including portraiture. Its fast f/1.8 maximum aperture is effective in low light and ideal for shallow depth of field focus control. An ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) provides fast, smooth and quiet AF action and because the front lens group does not rotate during focusing, polarizing and special filter effects can be used effectively.

Fast Maximum Aperture
A bright f/1.8 maximum aperture makes this lens a good choice for low-light photography and provides shallow depth of field control, ideal for portraiture with pleasing background blur.
Ultrasonic Autofocus Motor
With an ultrasonic motor (USM), the autofocus action on this lens is fast, smooth and quiet.

This lens is so sharp it hurts (the models of course). It's definitely sharper than my Canon 50mm 1.2L and that thing cost me 3 times the price. This baby's light, focuses really quickly and quietly and has a terrific build (plenty good, unless you're going to subject your lens to the very extreme warlike scenario). Not too expensive. The bokeh is superb too. Focus ring just stiff enough for comfy video focus pulls. Couldn't, even if I tried, come up with a single reason why the wad of cash in your safe is any better than this little glass beauty. Get it whenever you can afford it. I own four L-Lenses and this one just outdid every single one of them in image quality.

I bought this prime mainly for portrait and close up of people/animals/objects. The lens is very fast and light, the assembly is of good quality and overall is a good bang for your bucks (in the range of $400-$450). I'm really happy about its sharpness and it's very fun to use, the colors of the subjects are nice and the contrast is perfect. Overall, a good lens and it gives all you would expect from it.
What it really disappoints me is a very bad purple fringing and a very bad chromatic aberration around small details, particularly in high contrast and high luminosity situations. They say that stepping the aperture helps reducing these well-known defects, but as far as I can say, they are still annoying up to f4.0 in a consistent number of pictures, so this is an annoying defect that spoils the evaluation what is, apart from that, an excellent lens. I'm happy of the purchase, but there is margin of improvement.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

This is a must have lens for anyone that wants a fast and sharp prime lens. After just one roll of film, this has become my walk-around lens that I keep on my camera. Not only is it great for portraits, it takes great sharp landscape pictures and really excels with close up shots.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I bought this after I used my sister's at a family gathering. It is said by some that Canon's EF 135mmF2L is the sharpest lens in their inventory. I have that lens and it is incredibly sharp, but this lens is just as sharp and amazing in every aspect. Razor sharp and excellent for portrait shots, producing awesome bokeh. When I had my crop sensor camera I used a 50mm as a street lens. Considering that a 50mm on Canon's crop sensor cameras is roughly 80mm, this serves the same purpose for me now on my 6D. Fast, accurate, auto focus, superior build quality, and super sharp photos. I love this lens.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I always read reviews prior to purchasing a product. They are always helpful and you learn to read between the lines...ie a negative reveiwers skill level and knowledge, etc. When I read the reveiews for this lens I was surprised at how many were positive reveiws. Since I do product photography, I need the absolute sharpest lenses - but since I am just a professional upstart, I lack the cash for the seriously expensive lenses. This lense is perfect for me. When they say that this lense is tack sharp, you absolutely must believe it -even I was surprised at how tack sharp it is even at larger aperatures. This is helpful particularly when you want to blur backgrounds or shoot in low light. This 85mm lens is also easy to use freehand when shooting at slower aperatures as the balance it has on a 6d body is nothing less than incredible. If you are looking for seriously sharp glass for product shots or want a medium telephoto for portraiture, this lens can do it all. Trust me, this'll be the best money you've ever spent on glass. Bravo Canon.

I've been thinking about this lens for a long time, and finally bought one. I once rented the 85mm f/1.2 and loved it, but couldn't justify the cost at this time.

I'm shooting this on a full-frame body, and loving this lens.

I bought this lens primarily for portrait work, but it's great for many uses. It's sharp and fast. Great for low light situations as well as bright daylight shots. The only way to make this lens any better would be to put Image Stabilization on it, but then the price would increase dramatically. I'd recommend this lens to anyone looking for a great lens that will provide a beautiful bokeh at any aperture.

I really love this lens. It was my first purchased lens and is an excellent tool. I highly recommend it. My only gripe is the strong Chromatic Aberration present in areas of high contrast which is easily removed by stopping down. Shooting wide open produces an excellent Bokeh. I find my images sharp when I take the time to carefully focus to where I want. This lens is highly versatile and I look forward to using it more.

I just got this lens last week and i'm already in love! Just had an engagement photo session with it today but I can't wait to shoot some video with it. It's been super sharp with anything I shoot. Even at 1.8 it's sharp as a tack. Very impressive lens. Amazing bokeh as well. Next the the nifty 50 (50 f/1.8) i'd say this is Canon's 2nd best bargain lens!

I purchased this for my EOS 5D. Pictures are crisp; and I get excellent results even with low light indoor situations. It is an excellent lens for the price tag which it comes with.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I bought this lens for environmental portraits in journalism assignments and family gatherings. The quality is very good. I wish I could have purchased the "L" series prime lens at f/1.2, but budgetary considerations weighed against it. This was a great compromise.

I bought this lens on the recommendation of my photography teacher to take pictures at music venues with low lighting. I'm just starting out and am not ready to invest in expensive equipment yet. The first time I used this lens was at the Andrew Bird concert in Central Park. I was in the first row behind the pit and was able to get amazing shots with this lens. It took a while to get used to a prime lens, but it will be my go to when I need to capture images that are far away.
