The EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens from Canon is a highly practical medium telephoto prime lens ideal for a range of applications including portraiture. Its fast f/1.8 maximum aperture is effective in low light and ideal for shallow depth of field focus control. An ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) provides fast, smooth and quiet AF action and because the front lens group does not rotate during focusing, polarizing and special filter effects can be used effectively.

Fast Maximum Aperture
A bright f/1.8 maximum aperture makes this lens a good choice for low-light photography and provides shallow depth of field control, ideal for portraiture with pleasing background blur.
Ultrasonic Autofocus Motor
With an ultrasonic motor (USM), the autofocus action on this lens is fast, smooth and quiet.

This lens is so sharp it hurts (the models of course). It's definitely sharper than my Canon 50mm 1.2L and that thing cost me 3 times the price. This baby's light, focuses really quickly and quietly and has a terrific build (plenty good, unless you're going to subject your lens to the very extreme warlike scenario). Not too expensive. The bokeh is superb too. Focus ring just stiff enough for comfy video focus pulls. Couldn't, even if I tried, come up with a single reason why the wad of cash in your safe is any better than this little glass beauty. Get it whenever you can afford it. I own four L-Lenses and this one just outdid every single one of them in image quality.

I bought this prime mainly for portrait and close up of people/animals/objects. The lens is very fast and light, the assembly is of good quality and overall is a good bang for your bucks (in the range of $400-$450). I'm really happy about its sharpness and it's very fun to use, the colors of the subjects are nice and the contrast is perfect. Overall, a good lens and it gives all you would expect from it.
What it really disappoints me is a very bad purple fringing and a very bad chromatic aberration around small details, particularly in high contrast and high luminosity situations. They say that stepping the aperture helps reducing these well-known defects, but as far as I can say, they are still annoying up to f4.0 in a consistent number of pictures, so this is an annoying defect that spoils the evaluation what is, apart from that, an excellent lens. I'm happy of the purchase, but there is margin of improvement.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I'm not a girl who likes to drag a tripod around, which would make this lens perfect. I like to move and I end up chasing small children around during a photo session to get good shots, so it's a pain having to deal with movement blur. But, if I'd had the extra money just sitting around, I would have gotten the much nicer 85 rather than this! ;) This lens does well, but just isn't my favorite.

Great portrait lens! Super-fast focusing and very quiet. Performs beautifully at 1.8.
I have not taken it off the camera since I bought it...!
Important: If shooting indoors, concert events, etc. keep the lens shade on!!! There can be strage refractions of light wide open with stage lighting.

I could not be happier with this little guy. Very sharp, crisp, clean and it focuses fast. I found this to be my favorite lens when photographing portraits of children or a single person. It is also very light and gives your hands a nice break if you are shooting something like a wedding. Great depth, works well in low light, and you cannot beat the price. Everyone should have this guy in their camera bag.

I use this lens for portraiture. There is nothing like the 85mm 1.8 to give a photo that soft, buttery look to your photos. It has the crop that you need to give a portrait the perfect look without distortion that some lenses can create. Sharp focus, good bokeh, decent in low light and durable.

I am very pleased with this lens. I have had problems photographing in dim light for a long time, and this has helped tremendously. I had a little trouble with focus at first, but adjusted my camera autofocus spot and it works great. Great photos at my children's concerts. Since I am used to zoom lenses, I had to plan a bit before the event to get the right distance.

My first photo shoot of a family after using this lens produced amazing pictures with little or no editing needed. I used it with the new Canon 6D. This is by far my favorite lens. I currently have the 50mm f/1.4 and the Tameron 24-70mm.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

Great Lens! Fast & sharp, focuses well. Amazing price. Was debating between this lens and the 1.2, but with the difference in price this is the clear winner. Very happy with my purchase. Great portrait lens!

For the cost, I feel this lens is excellent. For portrait work, offers great bang for the buck. Great size, quiet, quick focus.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

Ken Rockwell recommends this lens on his website, and I have to say I agree with every word he says. If this lens has any drawback at all, it's that its widest aperture is so wide that it can leave you with less than a couple of inches of depth of field! But that's not a real deficiency, just something to take into account when using it. I love this lens.

Very sharp lens even wide open at 1.8. Extremely happy with my new lens from Canon. I've had my lens for almost two weeks now and I'm looking forward to getting more use out of it. The bokeh is superb.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

Wish I had bought this lens a long time ago. Last year I had to decide between this one and the EF-S 60mm macro. I bought the latter because I could not afford both and also because I wanted to take some macro shots. Don't get me wrong, I love my 60mm macro and I got more than a few great portrait shots with it. However, the 85mm f/1.8 produces better bokeh, and has a much faster autofocus. In fact, it was the bokeh that pushed me to buy this lens last week. I got a very nice shot of my wife, but wish the bokeh were creamier.

The biggest disadvantage I see with this lens is the temptation to shoot at 1.8 all the time. I took it for a test run today, and noticed that some of my shots did not have enough depth of field because I was too 1.8 happy, like in the attached photo.
