The Canon 85mm f/1.8 EF USM Autofocus Lens is a highly practical medium telephoto lens with superb delineation and portability. Images are sharp and clear at all apertures. Through computer simulations, the lens has been designed to give beautiful background blur. Since the front lens group does not rotate during focusing, special filter effects are not affected.

This lens is so sharp it hurts (the models of course). It's definitely sharper than my Canon 50mm 1.2L and that thing cost me 3 times the price. This baby's light, focuses really quickly and quietly and has a terrific build (plenty good, unless you're going to subject your lens to the very extreme warlike scenario). Not too expensive. The bokeh is superb too. Focus ring just stiff enough for comfy video focus pulls. Couldn't, even if I tried, come up with a single reason why the wad of cash in your safe is any better than this little glass beauty. Get it whenever you can afford it. I own four L-Lenses and this one just outdid every single one of them in image quality.

I bought this prime mainly for portrait and close up of people/animals/objects. The lens is very fast and light, the assembly is of good quality and overall is a good bang for your bucks (in the range of $400-$450). I'm really happy about its sharpness and it's very fun to use, the colors of the subjects are nice and the contrast is perfect. Overall, a good lens and it gives all you would expect from it.
What it really disappoints me is a very bad purple fringing and a very bad chromatic aberration around small details, particularly in high contrast and high luminosity situations. They say that stepping the aperture helps reducing these well-known defects, but as far as I can say, they are still annoying up to f4.0 in a consistent number of pictures, so this is an annoying defect that spoils the evaluation what is, apart from that, an excellent lens. I'm happy of the purchase, but there is margin of improvement.

Comments about Canon 85mm f/1.8 EF USM Autofocus Lens:
The product is built well, and the optics are of the finest I've seen. I would rate this lens higher than the Canon 24-70L I had until recently.
On f1.8 it gives you the clear advantage of night photography for shows and such, and on average aperture of 8 or 11 the photo is still crisp but sharp and magical
Amazing for portraits.
For those like me, who use a crop sensor camera, I warn it is the bit difficult on 85mm actually becoming about 135mm and requires a lot of distance between you and the subject. Take about 3-4 meters and you're perfectly aimed for the best portrait of your life!

Comments about Canon 85mm f/1.8 EF USM Autofocus Lens:
This lens is magnificent on my full frame 6D. Wide open it has a solidly ethereal feel. The focal length allows a comfortable distance to my subject and mildly flattens perspective. The build quality is on par with other USM lenses. Manual focus has the same plastic on plastic feel of other similar grade lenses. My only complaint is the lens hood attachment style.

Comments about Canon 85mm f/1.8 EF USM Autofocus Lens:
The lens is nice for what it is built to do. Built quality is good. Image quality is high, as other prime lenses. However, at this focus length, f/1.8 is simply not enough to get a satisfactorily shallow depth of field for portrait. For that purpose you need to get at least f/1.4, if not the super expensive f/1.2. So if you have things like 70-200f2.8, this lens would not give you much more. Now I mainly use it for some video recording under low light, such as solo instrument or dancing performance from front 5-10th rows. Another use is with tubes for macro photos on things like small flowers.

I use this for portrait photography. It does have some CA but it can be fixed in your photo editor no problem. The images & bokeh are very good. I plan to shoot some indoor sports with this lens also. I can't wait to see what it does in a gym. B&H service is great!! They were very informative about the product. Thanks Canon & B&H!!!!

Added this lens to my quiver for my 50D- have the nifty 50, Tamron 70-200 f2.8, Tamron 18-55 f2.8, sigma 10-20 f3.5
Excellent boukeh. Fastest focusing of all my lenses- This is my first lens with USM and I can tell a difference. I ahven't yet put it through all its paces but am very happy and impressed with it.
This is now my new walkabout lens

Comments about Canon 85mm f/1.8 EF USM Autofocus Lens:
I use this lens for portraits and creative situations that are enabled thanks to the shallow DOF. Sharp as hell on my 5D mk ii and makes night photography funnier then ever. Great for portraits with sharpness combined with balanced bokeh. USM is a big step up when going from 50mm f/1.8. If you're considering a prime and don't have too much money to spend, this is the one to buy. It will not let you down.

Overall I love this lens, the only thing that I see as a problem is a glowing purple cast around extremely lit areas of the image. The autofocus sometimes doesn't hit the mark but I am an manual focus kinda guys, so that doesn't affect me too much... The bokeh is amazing and very dreamy... I use this lens mostly for portrait work.. Seems to work best for head shots but if you kick up the f-stop to f.5.6-9 it works well for full body shots.

As someone who normally shoots landscapes I splurged and used the money saved on a 6d versus the Mark III and picked up the Canon 85mm f/1.8.
I recently shoot some engagement photos for my sister-in-law and was thrilled with the results. Sharp focus with lovely blurred backgrounds.
The lens autofocus works quickly and can you can easily use the manual focus ring to adjust focus as needed.
Great investmest for a fair price.
