I purchased this to make a large, make shift ring light, that could also be reversed and used for dramatic images. Their power, 45 w/s, is more than enough for most applications. They can be used to light up a dark room to give more depth. Punch up the light on your subject, a makeshift hair light, kicker, etc.... The only drawback is the bulbs aren't replaceable. But for the price, you can replace them probably cheaper than buying a replacement bulb. I also wished they would've come with gels, to change the color. Overall, I would say having several on hand if your an on-location photgrapher (journalist, lifestyle portraitist, or an on the go senior shooter), would come in handy in a pinch (using them in a table lamp socket means you don't have to carry extra gear)... Uses are limitless (especially if you have some ND gels on hand).... Highly recommend....

i have three of these now. i don't use them much but they do work well for what i use them for. they are very affordable but two of the three i bought came broken. the test button on the flash didn't work right out of the box. i don't need that function because i am using pocket wizards and the internal slave to fire them but it is a little disheartening knowing that 2 out of 3 came to me broken. if they test button worked i would give these a much better rating for how cheap you can buy them.

        Comments about Smith-Victor 45i Flashlite 45W/s Slave/Master Flash:

I use these little flash units in the studio to provide rim and accent lighting. I have purchased 6 of these and every unit has performed excellent.
The flash units are very versatile and small. I like the fact that they can be used in a standard light bulb socket making the configuration and use of the units extremely versatile. The slave feature on the units work great. I have used 4 of these on an outdoor photo shoot where they where powered from a 12 volt battery and a 400 watt power inverter they worked great!!

        Comments about Smith-Victor 45i Flashlite 45W/s Slave/Master Flash:

This is an inexpensive versatile flash. I tested the power of this unit using a Sekonic flash meter and compared to my Canon 580 Ex ii. Below are the readings for the Canon flash and Smith-Victor 45i Flashlite 45W/s Slave/Master Flash.Canon 580EXii:Full power 10 feet 100 ISO shutter speed 1/180, f 11.11/2 Power 10 feet 100 ISO shutter speed 1/180, f 8.01/4 power 10 feet 100 ISO shutter speed 1/180, f 5.6SMith Vector 45i with the reflector (This is a DIY reflector made from Utility light reflectors from [*][$]):Full Power (No control) 10 feet 100 ISO shutter speed 1/180, f 8.0 It is about half as much power of a 580ex ii. But, it cost only [$] compared to [$] for a Canon 580 EXii. Of course, you cannot control the power out put it is fixed. But with light modifiers one could reduce the power and quality of light on these. I taped an aluminum foil right on top of the bulb (on the screw on built in diffuser) creating a beauty dish. With that setup from the same distance, the power reduced to f 2.8 at 100 ISO. Moving the flash with this beauty dish set up, off camera to the right I used an inexpensive radio trigger to trigger the light. Here, bringing the ISO to 200, I got f 5.6, and could capture excellent portraiture with this light. One could use this as a main light on a budget and get beautiful photos. This has a a built in optical slave, but I prefer a Radio trigger for its use, especially if this is used in combination with camera flashes, the pre-flash may trigger and may not work properly. It recycles very fast 2-3 seconds. It is ready in 3-4 seconds once plugged into the outlet. This is my first unit, and I just got it. Cannot comment on the longevity of the product.

My company maufactures Photo Booths. Tried several of these flashes. We put heavy usage on the unit. We require it to go off every 15 seconds for 4 hours. They repeatedly fail as Master flashes using sync cord. Apparently is is a known issue with the sync input on the unit. DO NOT USE if you require similiar usage.

I love how these bulbs work and they are good enough for the work I do. However, I wish it had wider angle coverage (at least greater than 90 degree). I compare it with a Canon 580 and it's just about a step weaker, so it's not bad at all for non-mobile projects.

                    Comments about Smith-Victor 45i Flashlite 45W/s Slave/Master Flash:

I use three of these in a simple portrait setup. Triggering is fast and flawless. The light is smooth and even. I haven't timed them with a stopwatch, but I think they recycle in about five seconds or so, which is adequate for my purposes.

Recently, as I was removing one from its box, I made the mistake of dropping it an inch or two onto a coffee table. After the drop, I could hear something inside rattling around. I was able to save the shoot by improvising with a spare flash unit, but ordered a replacement for the broken light ASAP. On inspection, it turns out that the damage to the one I dropped is minor, and should be easily fixable with my trusty soldering iron.

All in all, I'm very happy with this product, and would not hesitate to recommend it.

This Flash really works, I have a Canon 7D and I configured the Flash setting for MANUAL and the other setting was eliminate the PRE-FLASH Firing. And I think that´s all.
I used a desk lamp pointing to the celing to spread the light.
The 7D boddy works wirellesly with this Flash.

I have a small studio set-up. These lights offer me lots of flexibility and are easy to use. I didn't expect getting the sync cords, so that was a nice surprise. I haven't found any negatives. I strongly recommend these lights!

So far this has been a great tool in my photo studio. At first I felt it was too bright. It just overshadowed everything I did. Then, I decided to use it for bounced light - works great! I've had no problems so far. I'm looking to experiment with it in other ways (besides bounced). I'm considering buying more for backup and to use together.

This is my 4th one, they are very useful. I taped over the slave and use Pocket Wizards to trigger the flash. I'll typically set one up in each corner of a room and get great soft lighting.

i have three of these now. i don't use them much but they do work well for what i use them for. they are very affordable but two of the three i bought came broken. the test button on the flash didn't work right out of the box. i don't need that function because i am using pocket wizards and the internal slave to fire them but it is a little disheartening knowing that 2 out of 3 came to me broken. if they test button worked i would give these a much better rating for how cheap you can buy them.
