Photographers Formulary TF-4 Archival Rapid Fixer is an extraordinary fixer for both paper and most films.

TF-4 works well in batch processing, fixing resin coated paper in 30 seconds and fiber based paper in 60 seconds.

You can also use TF-4 on TMax films, fixing for 6 minutes to remove the magenta stain. it is recommended to run 20 rolls of film to 1 liter working solution.

TF-4 fixer does not require a stop bath or a hypo-clearing agent, and has little odor when mixed with distilled water.

TF-4 is a non-hardening fixer, which makes it excellent for prints that are to be toned or retouched. Most modern film emulsions have a built-in hardener, eliminating the need for hardener in the fix.

The stock solution which has a shelf life of 1 year is diluted 1:3 to make the working solution. The working solution has a shelf life of 6 months.

TF-4 is recommended in The Book of Pyro for PMK negatives, by Gordon Hutchings, due to the fact that an alkaline fixer solution such as TF-4 helps achieve maximum pyro stain on a negative.

A conventional rapid fix may diminish staining effects of pyro and PMK formula.

This will make 1 gallon of Working Solution.

    Best fixer I have used

Super easy to mix. Stock solution lasts for months. Mixed solution is good for 30-50 rolls. Clears film quickly.

It works. It gets all the magentaness about of kodak films like it was designed to do. Bonus: was able to shake and make a 1 liter batch instead of 1 gallon, doesn't smell as much as was claimed.

Comments about Photographers' Formulary TF-4 Archival Rapid Fixer for Black & White Film & Paper:

It is a pretty useful product. I skipped the stop bath and my paper/film just directly goes in here after the developer. Clears my film pretty quick, around 20 seconds, and gets rid of the purple stain. The only bad thing is that it smells awful. I would recommend the new TF-5 that doesn't smell as bad but works the same.

I'm new to developing BW negatives. I learned about this fixer when researching a setup that would be rather streamlined and minimalist. This fixer happens to eliminate stop bath (use water instead) - that was huge for me as it eliminates a chemical. I've had great results.

Comments about Photographers' Formulary TF-4 Archival Rapid Fixer for Black & White Film & Paper:

When you are looking for an easily removed rapid fix, this is the product you are looking for. It works well with pyro staining developers and it is removed easily from film and paper. The fixer comes as a concentrated mixture in a bottle which should be mixed well and then mixed completely with 3x as much water (one quart makes one gallon). Mixing the concentrate well enough to use as a one shot fixer appears to be all but impossible, unlike concentrated liquid fixers (i.e. ilford and sprint). One gallon working strength fixer may be stored in a jug for a while, so this is not a particular issue.

This fixer is unique, as it eliminates having to use a stopper. Just wash with 68 degree Fahrenheit distilled water for one minute after pouring out the developer, then pour in this stuff. Simplify the process!!

I purchased this fixer to use on my first batch of black and white film and had wonderful results.

I chose this fixer for my film due to it being a concentrate that makes a gallon of working solution (instead of 5 liters or other odd amounts that I didn't have a container for.) Also a good price, considering how long it lasts. I'm still using the batch I mixed up over a year ago and it works great. I haven't used it on prints yet. I've used it on HP5+, Fuji acros, TMAX and TriX.

I use a distilled water stop bath on my film before fixing, though the directions state no stop is needed.
