I love this tripod head! I bought a new tripod head because my old one couldn't hold up my canon 7d and 70-200 f/2.8 is mkII and battery grip. This head can hold all of that with a master flash in the hot shoe as well and then some. with that weight this gear head is very precise and steady with no slipping or creeping. When adjusting, you have a choice of precise movements or a quick release to make larger adjustments. The only 2 negative things that I can possibly think of: you can only look up up to a 30 degree angle, however you can just reverse mount the camera/lens on the quick release plate (not a big deal for me). The second negative (shown in photo) is the space in-between the left/right tilt knob (ONLY if you have a full sized body or battery grip)is a little tight especially if you have bigger fingers. I would not use this for sports, action, travel, video, events, or wildlife because it is so precise and has a little too much weight to it for these.

The head won't allow your camera to "look straight up" : one of the buttons hits the central part of the head preventing it to look up more than app 30 degrees.
This wouldn't be so much of a problem if it were easy to mount the camera facing aft on the head, but the mouning plate will only fit one way on the head. The workaround is to unscrew the plate slightly (with a screwdriver or coin), turn it 180 degress, fasten it again, mount the camera back on the head, turn it sideways and up... what a hassle.
Except for this not so clever design, the head works great. I'm pleased with it.

Comments about Manfrotto 410 Junior Geared Head - Supports 11 lbs (5kg):
I purchased the Manfrotto 410 initially for use in astro photography using the Polarie Star Tracker. I also purchased the Nikon DR-5 right angle viewfinder to assist in my sky photos. All three were purchased from B&H.
The 410 hasn't seen the dark of night yet as my wife, who manages a large regional event, has put me to work photographing souvenirs and garments for her web site and event program.
The 410 was a blessing! Trying to accurately use a ball head was cumbersome at best. The 410 made accurate adjustments very easy without the camera flopping around on the tripod. The unit is very well made and should last both my daughters and my lifetime.
When I received the package the weight startled me. I thought the Junior head would be lighter. Actually I am very pleased with this hefty head. With camera, lens and whatever else I attach I am confident it can handle the load.
I could not have been more pleased with the Manfrotto 410.

Comments about Manfrotto 410 Junior Geared Head - Supports 11 lbs (5kg):
Only thing holding me back from giving it 5 stars is that it is a little heavy and the gears are a bit hard for my little hands to operate but other than that I really wish I had bought this product years ago. I am a real estate photographer and getting shots properly aligned vertically and horizontally saves me so much time in post processing!! I have spent the last 4 years buying and destroying cheaper products even though I have been told that this is the one I needed. I just didn't want to spend the money. I have wasted the same amount on inadequate products. This is exactly what I needed. Very precise. An added plus is that there are no long handles to get in the way when trying to get into tight corners.

Comments about Manfrotto 410 Junior Geared Head - Supports 11 lbs (5kg):
I use the Gear Head for very close up micro/macro shooting, distant wildlife shooting, freezing humming birds in flight.
The gross and fine adjustments are precise and work well.
The quick release plate with the safety trigger as solid and dependable.
The one drawback is the placement of the vertical adjustment knob. There's very little room to access and operate the spring loaded knob.
It either takes a very strong thumb or a small hand to access the gross adjustment knob.

I bought this because I was tired of ball heads moving in all directions when trying to reposition them. I mostly shoot food, architecture and landscape so the small, exact movements are appreciated.Build is very solid and the QR plate is large enough for medium format cameras to sit comfortably on top of. My only issue so far is that in order to shoot straight up, the camera has to be reversed on the QR plate... maybe I'm missing something.. Also, I put this on a series 4 gitzo and now need a spacer because of the size of the base on the actual tripod. Not a big deal, but something to be aware of if you're not buying manfrotto legs.

I shoot indoor flower close-ups and had been using an 804RC2 also by Manfrotto but trying to adjust it always required multiple attempts since it would slip a little. With this one it's so easy to get exactly the angle I want and it doesn't move after I stop turning the knobs. I have no fear of the camera coming off as I move the camera about. I use it with a Nikon D800 and their 105mm macro lenses so while the head may be heavy, the security and control it provides more than makes up for it.

I have good tripods and ball heads, but I didn't use them except when absolutely necessary. Many of my friends use and laud the Arca Swiss Cube, but that pricey device is out of my range. So one of my Cube friends found these Manfrotto geared heads and I opted for the 410 because at $ I could afford to pitch it if I didn't like it. That's no problem -- I love it! I use it for:- Macro- HDR- Focus-stacking- Astronomical photography- Architectural photographyand other uses.It allows quick, precise framing for composition. Its heavy, but because I get around using a mobility scooter that's no problem for me. And its not that heavy if you're serious about your photography. It has several limitations:1. The heaviest lens you can use without taking extra precaution is about 3lbs., e.g., a 70-200 f2.8 or a 300 f4. A 7lb. 500 is definitely pushing its limits, but you can manage for occasional use -- otherwise, get the larger 405.2. The colder it gets, the stiffer the lubricant gets, and that affects speed of operation. For example, instead of happening instantly, vertical plane movements may lag by a second or more as the lens s-e-t-t-l-e-s into place. Note that stiff lubricant is a problem with all geared heads.3. I don't use the Manfrotto quick release system. I found Hejnar (search for it) sells a replacement plate and clamp for Arca Swiss mounts. In sum, this is a highly recommended addition for precise photographic composition, and I've become a regular tripod user due to this geared head.

Comments about Manfrotto 410 Junior Geared Head - Supports 11 lbs (5kg):
If you want a tough, durable geared head with fine, 3-axis control, this is the one for you. I mainly use it for astrophotography, and attach to it an automated star tracker, a Nikon D300s and a 300m prime lens. It handles the weight absolutely fine.
By far the best features for me are the adjustable knobs for panning. You can make large through to very fine adjustments, making it a highly versatile piece of equipment. In order to take long exposure, tracked shots of the stars, I have to fine adjust the equipment in a very precise way, as well as set it to certain inclinations depending on what latitude I'm on. The Manfrotto 410 Junior Geared is absolutely ideal for this.
The only small con is that it is pretty heavy. I travel a lot with my gear, sometimes to fairly remote locations, and the weight is always a concern. However, it is still worth it, and I realize that the weight is in part due to this being an excellent and sturdy head.
I unreservedly recommend it.

It is easy to use and mostly stable, but disengaging and reengaging the gears feels cheap and as though it is going to break. The idea of this head is good and so far it works, but I have only shot inside and have concerns if I shoot outside it windy conditions that it won't perform as expected.
