We've all had the lousy experience of ordering something online, only to open the package when it arrives and be utterly disappointed because it didn't live up to the picture and description. But what a pleasant surprise to open a box and discover that the item far EXCEEDS what you expected it to be! Such was the case with this Slik PRO 700DX tripod. Let me tell you, I'm a bit of geek when it comes to researching things before I buy... I go a little overboard, searching every corner of the web, talking to people I know, etc., often for weeks on end before I actually make the purchase. Buying a quality tripod was certainly no exception. In fact, if you've visited any web page with the word "tripod" on it... chances are I've already been there and read everything on it. The dilemma for me was that, as a non-professional photographer, I couldn't justify spending my life's savings on some of those incredibly high $ units, but I also wanted to avoid the flimsy tripods typically found at your local electronics/photo retailer. Don't get me wrong... I'm not cheap. I own a Canon 7D with a grip and four very high-end lenses. That's where I wanted to spend the big bucks because it's well worth it. But there is no way I'm trusting gear like that to a cheap tripod! However, I still couldn't really justify the amounts they are asking for some of the big Manfrotto's. And even the low-end Manfrotto units that sell for around $150-$200 just don't seem to be offering anything really spectacular... plus you have to buy the head separately, which, of course is not cheap. (By the way, if you're looking for a new camera, the 7D is a STELLAR camera -- a real gem!)Anyway, in my research for tripods, this Slik 700DX caught my eye. It certainly "looked" rugged and well-made, and the reviews -- my gosh, people were raving about this thing, even some reviewers who I noticed were pretty "harsh" in reviewing other items. I decided to give it a shot, so I ordered one from B&H.[...]But it wasn't until I opened the inner box that I was really amazed. This is a BIG tripod, built solid as a rock! You can just "feel" it the instant you take it out of the box. The machining done on all the parts is absolutely top-notch. It all fits together seamlessly and tight... no wobbling or bad joints. I'm convinced that I could go into combat with this tripod as my only weapon and seriously whip up on the enemy with it. No kidding, it is one heck of a solid, rugged piece of equipment that could stand up to just about anything! All three legs are wrapped in a very thick, plush foam padding that gives the entire tripod a super rich look and feel. Using a tripod outside in the dead of winter obviously makes the metal get freezing cold... so being able to grab the foam-covered legs is a really, really nice touch! I will never buy another tripod without foam padding on the legs. Ever. The foam padding also gives the legs a "bigger" feel, which for me (at 6'3" 220lbs) makes it much easier to grab and carry than holding a thin aluminum leg. Also, as I said, this tripod has foam padding on ALL three legs... most manufacturers only cover two. Not sure why they do that, but having all three covered gives the tripod a much more balanced look and feel. The tripod can be raised to an amazingly tall height, much taller than any tripod I've ever used, which is perfect me at 6'3". I'm SO tired of always having to bend down to frame up my shots! After a day of landscape shooting, my back always used to ache. Thanks to the 700DX, those days are gone, even for a tall bloke like me. The head that comes with this unit that B&H is selling is also much bigger than you might think. I was concerned whether my 7D with battery grip and large lens would sit securely on it, but it is as solid and secure as it can be. I decided to go ahead and purchase the 700DX with the included head rather than just the legs alone, even though I knew I wanted to use the Slik Pro 800 Ballhead. My son prefers the head with the two handles since he does a lot of video work and uses a Sony VX2000. So he's happy with the head unit included with the 700DX, but I pop on the Slik Pro 800 Ballhead when I'm using it. I find it's more streamlined to carry without the handles, plus I just enjoy the feel of the 800 ballhead more than the standard panhead. I love the quick-release disc used by the Slik heads. It's a really clever design. All in all, I would HIGHLY recommend this tripod to any photographer who is looking for a solid, extremely well-built unit, and one that is steady enough to not shake in the wind and defeat the purpose of using a tripod in the first place. No, it's not the tripod you would want to carry on a 9-mile hike, but really, it's not that difficult at all to carry where you need it to go. (My son is only 14 and he can handle it.) Seriously, if you're looking for a top-of-the-line quality tripod without having to sell your car to buy it... this is it. You'll have a hard time finding better value for the money anywhere!! Believe me, I've looked. I am extremely happy with this purchase!

The 700DX tripod would be five stars except for the round quick release plate. The quality and value are excellent, it is as sturdy as they say, and it has a great feel to it. It is indeed massive, but the 74" height is great, especially for 6'2" me who likes to take sky pictures looking through a DSLR. They also don't usually mention that the center column is reversible, which is great with those long legs.

The round quick release plate was a deal breaker for me. Slik makes a big thing about how you can mount it in any direction, but I want my camera aligned with the V and H tilt axes. Although the round plate has a big slot, it is not held in by this except for a flimsy safety catch. The plate is only held by a 3/8" square metal piece that presses on the smooth side. I was very uncomfortable with only that amount of friction holding in my expensive camera. The final straw was when I put the camera in the vertical position the round plate would rotate and allow my lens to sag. It just didn't feel safe. I exchanged the 700DX for a 500DX which is almost identical (except only 64" high) with a more reasonable sized head and a good square, beveled quick release plate (which I am very pleased with). If you want the 74" height, I would suggest pairing the 700DX legs with a different head.

Did a good deal of research before settling on this tripod. It is sturdy with all the functionality that I need. It is a little heavy, but I didn't expect a featherweight either. If you are looking for a moderatly priced tripod that will hold up - both your equipment and to use, this is the one.

Comments about Slik Pro 700DX Tripod with 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head - Supports 15 lbs (6.8kg):

I received this tripod in one day after ordering it from B&H Photo, which in itself makes for a delightful transaction. The shipping box contained the product box for the Slik Pro 700DX, which was packed reasonably secure. There could have been a bit more packing material (air-bubble pouches) placed at both ends inside the shipping box, but what was there seemed to be sufficient as there was no shipping damaged whatsoever via UPS.

The tripod itself was securely packaged inside the product box and was contained within a plastic sleeve secured closed with a twist-tie. Cardboard separators secured the lower end of the tripod's folded legs, with another set of cardboard pieces enclosing and securing the head portion in a box-like configuration.

After removing the tripod from its packaging materials, it was immediately evident I had made the right choice. This thing is impeccable. It's built like a tank with the precision of a watch! If you're looking for a rugged high-quality tripod this is the one you want. The fit and finish are typical of most Japanese-designed products. This tripod was made in Thailand, but it's very apparent that the Japanese have a strong hand in maintaining outstanding production quality (I used to work for a Japanese company, so I understand their fanaticism about building good quality products).

The legs each extend in 3 adjustable sections and when fully extended make for a very tall tripod with the center post fully lowered. Raising the center post can make the pan-tilt head even higher! The legs are also adjustable in 3 different angles allowing a multitude of combinations for height, stability, and uneven terrain when necessary.

The removal of the camera mounting shoe from the pan head is easy and precise. The pan and tilt adjustments are also smooth and easy to lock in place, with the head's camera platform easily leveled with the aid of two opposing built-in bubble levels.

Included with the tripod, is a carrying case made from ballistic nylon with a zippered opening at one end and lined inside with a smooth material.

After having tried and evaluated several other camera tripods, one of which was recommended by a major photographic magazine but in reality was junk, the Slik Pro 700DX is a real winner and can't be beat for the money! It's no wonder so many people rate it so highly.

I am giving it 4 stars because I am not that happy with the smoothness of the tilt head.

It really is a nice tripod, but if you need more... flexibility in what are you use it for, think again. This is the only reason I wouldn't recommend it to a friend.

I use this tripod with my Pentax k-50, it is a very sturdy unit that is comfortable and easy to use. Would definitely recommend. I especially love the quick release, this may be something common on most newer tripods but it is such a great feature. I am 5'8" and with the legs extended I can look right into my camera without bending at all, plus you still have the center beam for extra height. It could be a little lighter but for the price you can't go wrong.

It has great height adjustment features from the leg clips to the center post from almost on the floor to about 6.5 feet. Only time will tell if I should have spent hundreds of dollars more.

Love that this is really tall and that you can also remove the center post for very low macro shots with the stability that this tripod holds.

Comments about Slik Pro 700DX Tripod with 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head - Supports 15 lbs (6.8kg):

Used it to take indoor pics, moves easily. Camera can be detached quickly.Very stable in windy conditions. I plan to take this to Hawaii early in Jan. Till now no problems found other than the weight of the item (I knew the weight before and still bought it. So not a major complaint)

quit looking at any other tripod-this one is heavy duty, will outlast you and your grandchildren. but by being heavy duty, is weighs more. so if youre gonna go hikin'in the mountains with a tripod, this one isnt for you, get a used beater for that. for studio and light travel, this one is the whip. nuff said.

I use it for shooting macros, & portraiture, & any time I need solid stability.

The material it is made from makes it lighter than some who may mention weight- if you want stability, & good features in a tripod, you have to expect some weight - unless you spend a whole lot more for carbon fiber…

I recently upgraded my tripod to the 700DX from a much less professional one and I am extremely pleased with my purchase. This tripod has great stability and is easy to use. It's heavier than my last tripod, but worth it's weight in gold!
