The B+W 77mm Circular Polarizer Slim Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.
A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.
B+W filters are constructed from high quality Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. The slim filters are specifically designed for use with wide angle lenses and are only 0.2" / 5mm thick. They do not have front threads for stacking additional filters.
Note: This filter ring's outside diameter is slightly larger than the actual thread size, and because of this you may be unable to attach the lens manufacturer's bayonet-mounted lens hood to the lens while using this filter. This is dependent on your specific lens and how thick the front rim of the lens is; with thinner, low-profile lenses usually being affected more.

I use this filter primarily on the Canon 17-40mm f/4L and sometimes on the 24-105mm f/4L. It makes skies/clouds pop so vividly, and it reduces glare very well. It is very high quality (to be expected from B+W) and very slim - so it doesn't exacerbate vignetting on wide angle lenses.
As such however, the circular portion is less pronounced and there is no front thread, which also means that it includes its own special lens cover, which definitely slides off easier than the clip on caps. But that just comes with the territory; its not necessarily a fault - more of a necessity of the design and desired effect.

This was a great polarizer when in use. However, it would not take other filters or a regular lens cap - it came with a flimsy push-on lens cap that kept falling off every 100 feet or so. I do a lot of hiking in the desert, and this was unacceptable. This would only be a good filter if you plan to keep the camera on a tripod and indoors.

Comments about B+W 77mm Circular Polarizer Slim Filter:
I recently purchased a Tamron 10-24mm wide angle, 77mm lens for my Canon T3i. I'll be traveling to Ireland in August (2013) and plan to do quite a bit of landscape photography and videography. I did a bit of research and the reviews for the B+W Circular Polarizer filter were glowing. I decided to spend the extra money because I wanted a polarizer that actually does something. So far, I'm very happy with the results that I've gotten with this filter.

I have been using this with a 10-24mm lens for beach shots. Had some great results and very minimal color distortion across the image even at 10mm. Didn't see any vignetting. Screws on the lens pretty well, but does not fit with my lens cap.

I use this to shoot HD video with a DSLR and it instantly made all outdoor shooting look 1000% better. Blue skies get nice deep saturation and shiny things like cars and windows get toned down in the exposure without losing detail. My bosses were immediately impressed with the footage. Great price too.

Perfect to protect your lens. Slim style is important for any wide angle lens, especially if you are going to add any other filters. Good quality and strong build. Easy screw on filter that allows you to easily use lens cover.
Comments about B+W 77mm Circular Polarizer Slim Filter:
A bit thin and not as easy to rotate if you have bigger fingers. Also and more importantly, the lens cap is not a 77mm reg. It comes with it's own fit-over cap. Not interchangable with you other lens caps.

the class is so sensitive to get a scratch. Ive used micro fiber cloth and lens solution (non alcohol) to clean the filter but still manage to get a scratch expecially on the edges of the filter. It's not noticeable but somehow it makes you feel cheated. Ill get the cheaper one next time.

I've used another B+W filter for many years. This one holds up the same standards.
While it is a good performer optically, it is a little difficult to rotate due to its slim design.

only got this to fit a wide angle lens. i was under the impression that when you rotate it the effect intensifies, but it doesn't change. there are only a few photos where i can actually tell that its even on. does not remove reflections as advertised. started rattling a week after i got it.

I used this on my Tokina 11-16 and it worked out really well. Even at 11mm the filter is unobtrusive. As soon as I stack it with another filter I see it on the edges.

I decided to try a different filter for my new lens. I was disappointed in the construction of this filter and the cap does not "click" on. I am going to hold on it to experiment with the effects of using a polorized filter in different situations.
