Nikon 52mm Circular Polarizer (C-PL1L) Glass Filter - Drop-In

Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun. Filter factor is between 2.3 and 2.8 (approx. +1.3 stops).

This is a drop-in circular polarizing filter for the following Nikon lenses: AF-S 300/2.8D, AF-S 500/4D, AF-S 600/4D, AF-S 200-400/4G and the ED 400/2.8S (Nikon Cat#1499). This filter is externally rotatable.

Circular polarizers are specifically designed for use with auto-focus SLR cameras (They will also work on manual systems without problems).

I bought this for my new 200-400 f/4 lens to reduce some of the reflections and darken the sky in daytime field sports events. It works well, and the thumbwheel on the exterior is quite easy to use. Since the lens is long, having the drop-in not only lets you use a smaller filter, but one that is closer to the camera's body and thus more easily reached and adjusted quickly during a shoot, as opposed to reaching to the end of the lens and into the hood. I've never found a 3rd-party polarizer to substitute for this one, not that I'd want one -- the Nikon quality is tough to beat.

It comes in a padded clear case, but it's not one which is easy to use in the field. You need a filter pouch, especially since you will be removing the default clear filter to place the polarizer filter in the lens.

Be aware that this takes the light down approximately one stop, so you'll want to keep the pouch with the clear one handy as the light dims at day's end. Even with a D3 cranked up to its highest ISO, you'll find under stadium lights that the filter darkens a bit too much.

I was excited to get this drop in filter, and use it with a Nikon 500mm F4 VR for my bird photography. Hoping that it would saturate colors in feathers, and foliage. I was a little disappointed with the weak effect. My screw mount cpl filters give a much richer effect on my other lenses.

Comments about Nikon 52mm Circular Polarizer (C-PL1L) Glass Filter - Drop-In:

The filter slips in easily and securely. Easy to adjust and rotate the filter inside the lens to get the polarizing effect. Strong construction for the mount. The hard plastic case for the $[$]filter is very cheaply made and mine was broken when I received the new filter from B&H. I bought a B+W hard plastic filter case for 105mm filters for $[$]and the Nikon 52mm drop-in filter assembly and the blue foam from the cheap Nikon case fit perfectly. Hard to understand why Nikon continues to use very fragile plastic cases for so many items it sells.

Comments about Nikon 52mm Circular Polarizer (C-PL1L) Glass Filter - Drop-In:

I use this for photographing surfing and cricket.

Very easy to use, even under a lens & camera cover on the beach (sand, salt spray)

Was interesting to see a different colouring of the sky - previous CPL I've used on shorter lenses have the effect of darkening the sky, whereas this was putting a brownish colour to the sky - almost a warming effect together with removing glare. But as with any CPL, the angle relative to the sun is very important - max effect is when shooting at 90 degrees to the sun.

The CPL did take 1+ stop of light depending on how much effect I dialed in, but isn't really an issue when shooting in bright light and trying to remove the glare / reflections.

The filter holder provided by Nikon was really poor quality!

It is great for any situation with lots of reflected light especially water shots (ducks). I am anxious to use it for snow scenes, etc. The thumb screw works easily and I am quite happy with the product.

Comments about Nikon 52mm Circular Polarizer (C-PL1L) Glass Filter - Drop-In:

This circular polarizer works very well, smooth operating and built to last. It's also nice that it fits many of Nikon's big glass for those lucky enough to have 400 & 500MM lenses. I bought this for my newly acquired Nikon 300mm 2.8 VRII. I'm very happy with it, the lens and this filter. Both are highly recommended.

I have only one negitive for Nikon. This unit should come with a better case for secure storage for the polarizer or for the clear glass unit when using this filter. It comes with a clear plastic box with foam insert, which is clearly not meant for daily use. A case is available from Nikon, but has been out of stock for sometime.
Nikon sometimes misses the boat on things like this. They have great gear but often fail to go that extra step.

Comments about Nikon 52mm Circular Polarizer (C-PL1L) Glass Filter - Drop-In:

You can "circulate" the lens without removing it from the holder. Shooting in CO, a CP is as valuable as sunscreen.

Not great: removing or installing when you've got a lens coat on your lens. But really no big deal. A minor annoyance at best.

Great: Construction, ease of use, great case for keeping the filter weatherproof. This CP is one one of the best!

Essentially equipment that I have mated to my Nikor 200-400 F4 VRII and D3S to shoot outdoor sports (soccer primarily). Game times often don't give the best light and shadows/backgrounds can mess with that perfect shot. Simple fast and adds great color enhancement.

Use on my new 200-400 f/4 zoom. Works great. Darkens skies and takes reflections off glass and water. Easy to use and well built.

I know it was expensive but I cannot say how much I love this filter, super easy to use with perfect results. I use this in my 200-400mm and the difference is amazing. I love C-pol filters but I never imagined I would like it this much on my telephoto. Was scared to buy it because of the cost, but am so glad I did, worth every penny. The optical quality is perfect and the built quality is the same. Would give it 6 starts if I could.

Comments about Nikon 52mm Circular Polarizer (C-PL1L) Glass Filter - Drop-In:

Great Nikon quality, but really the only choice and very pricey. Works great in my 400mm 2.8 Nikkor and my 300mm 2.8 Nikkor and will also work in the 600mm Nikkor as soon as I can afford to pruchase one. So, it's one polarizer that will fit the rear filter slot of all 3 lenses and that makes the high price a little more acceptable.

Comments about Nikon 52mm Circular Polarizer (C-PL1L) Glass Filter - Drop-In:

If you own a high-end Nikon telephoto, you already know this piece, since it is included with the lens and a has a clear filter inserted. This is the same thing, with a polarizer. Quality craftsmanship, but I have to give it 4 stars because the price is just ridiculous. But if you are shooting and want to bring down the glare, you do not have a lot of choice. Paid a lot, but happy with what I received.
