Product Highlights
  • "6-Bit" Coding
  • Outstanding Sharpness & Contrast
  • High Resolving Power

The 35mm f/2 Summicron-M Aspherical Lens from Leica is an aspheric lens surface technology for this long popular Leica 35mm M lens. Excellent sharpness and contrast rendition and high resolving power are the benefits of this new computation. This lens has outstanding imaging performance across the entire focusing range. Its versatility and all-around performance makes this a world class lens in the high-speed wide-angle category. Equipped with the 35mm f/2 Summicron-M Aspherical lens, the Leica M becomes an elegant compact camera. This lens is also available in a silver chrome plated version.

This lens has been updated with the "6-bit" coding, which allows the digital M camera to read this information optically and to identify which lens is being used. The camera can then (optionally) apply a "final stage" software based vignetting correction (for RAW images the lens used is simply recorded, no change is made).

Includes "6-bit code" which allows the digital M8 camera to identify which lens is being used, and also to store this information in image metadata

I use this lens on my film bodies, for street and fine art photography work. It is the most useful focal length for 24x36 format; so much, in fact, that I need to use two cameras with their own 35mm Summicrons.

What's so great about it? It has all the qualities of a classic lens in all the right proportions. It has the right amount of sharpness and the right amount of contrast, so that the image does not appear "hard." It lets through all the right subtleties of color at all apertures. Lighting is uniform all throughout the 35mm frame. The off-focus bokeh is unmatched. It's as if you are looking at the scene itself; not through a piece of glass or fog. The 35mm Summicron seems to have the ability to render on film the atmosphere and/or mood.

There is nothing negative to say about this lens. I personally don't think there are any flaws in the design. On the M8, the 35mm Summicron is actually a 45mm lens. I do wish that Leica would make a specialized 35mm Summicron for the M8, because of the camera's 1.3 crop factor.

Don't just get a "starter lens" for your M8 or film camera; go straight for something that is infintely useful at any level or situation. Leica lenses are actually less expensive, because they hold their value.

A nice compact lens that produces sharp results in most situations. However, I have found it to be subject to unacceptable flare if there is a bright light in or near the subject. And the price includes a Leica brand premium which may or may not be warranted.

Comments about 35mm f/2.0 Summicron M Aspherical Manual Focus Lens (6-Bit) - Black:

I wanted something lighter to pair with my new Sony A7 that I could use for street and travel photography. I am an amateur, so I was a bit concerned about the cost. Whether it was a good idea to spend that much on a lens or not, I am really happy with both the picture quality and weight/size. I don't regret my purchase at all :)

Comments about 35mm f/2.0 Summicron M Aspherical Manual Focus Lens (6-Bit) - Black:

This is just so an extraordinary lens! Tak sharp at any distance, colors are fantastic and the 35mm Focal length is highly versatile for everything, for what one should need to do. For me, no need to get the f1.4 35mm Summilux-version, as the new version with FLE(floating-elements),has still some focus shift left (only a tiny bit, but it is still there...) so why bother to spend $ more, as the Summicron-M Asph. is just perfect!?

Comments about 35mm f/2.0 Summicron M Aspherical Manual Focus Lens (6-Bit) - Black:

I am a street photographer who almost exclusively uses rangefinder 35mm focal length lenses. I have tried many different 35mm lens for my various Leica M film and digital cameras. I keep coming back to the Leica 35mm 2.0 Summicron. I think it is the best 35mm rangefinder lens ever made. It is built solid. It is sharp. It is a bit contrasty being an ASPH lens but that's how I like it. It is small and balances the weight of Leica M cameras well. I even like it better the the Leica 35mm 1.4 Summilux ASPH FLE which is a fantastic lens and arguably considered the best 35mm lens made by many photographers. I like the Summicron better because I think there is less distortion. It is also cheaper the the Lux for the less aperture stop. The black is lighter than the chrome but the chrome just looks beautiful. I have no complaints. BH shipping and service are excellent as always.

Comments about 35mm f/2.0 Summicron M Aspherical Manual Focus Lens (6-Bit) - Black:

            I prefer to shoot 50mm and 75mm.
But 35mm offers you more latitude to hand hold in dim light or in tighter spaces.
This lens is very easy to use and hence I do agree this is probably the best rangefinder lens to recommend to beginners.
I'm not a huge fan of the focussing tab, but on the 35/2 there is sufficient DOF that you never need to worry about super fine focus adjustments...
My only disappointment/surprise was that the lens shipped with a plastic rather than metal hood. Most of Leica's lenses (except the entry level Summarit's) ship with metal hoods so this seems to be an exception...

If you own a Leica M body, this should be first lens you buy. It's sharp, easy to focus, small, light, and did I say it's sharp?

I also own the 50mm Summicron. While it's an excellent lens, the 35mm says on my camera 90% of the time.

I bought this lens for my M6. I LOVE the design. It's well made and the focusing is very smooth. Optically the photos are very good. I can only compare it to the Zeiss Biogon 35, which is also very good. I prefer the Leica due to it's slightly smaller size. The lens hood - which comes standard - is effective as well. Not to mention it's also very handsome. When I hold a Leica lens in my hands it's magic. The optics, beauty, heaver / light feel all add up to magic, and that's what makes photography fun. Highly recommended.

Comments about 35mm f/2.0 Summicron M Aspherical Manual Focus Lens (6-Bit) - Black:

I purchased this with a Leica MP and use it for general/walk-around photography.

The lens is incredibly sharp, and fits nicely on the camera. Focusing is smooth, and provides just the right amount of resistance.

I do wish the focusing ring was knurled throughout, instead of only being on the finger notch. I sometimes have trouble with making minor focus adjustments when using the notch.

Also, the aperture ring feels "loose" in comparison to the rest of the lens. I've read this is normal, but it caught me off guard at first.

Overall, I'm very happy with this lens.

Having acquired a new Leica M I could afford at this time only one lens for primarily landscape/nature photography. A 35mm lens is a good first lens and it does not disappoint. Wonderful perspective and color redention. The build quality is great and small size supports easy carrying.

Comments about 35mm f/2.0 Summicron M Aspherical Manual Focus Lens (6-Bit) - Black:

This is the lens to start with for a Leica. On the .72x viewfinder the frame lines are perfect! They take up just enough room that you have a little bit of room on the sides to see whats coming into your frame. Focusing is a breeze with this lens and the depth of field is outstanding for street photography.

The down side is it isn't as close up as a 50mm or 75mm but its a great all around lens. Makes shooting from the hip easy.

Another thing to consider, f/2 is more than enough! I have had a few shots when I had wished for the f/1.4 Summilux however in retrospect those shot were still impossible even with the f/1.4, I needed almost two and a half stops more light to even consider taking them.

In the end the Summicron is the way to go. No need for a big fat Summilux, that just defeats the purpose of shooting a rangefinder! Keep it light, keep it small.

Comments about 35mm f/2.0 Summicron M Aspherical Manual Focus Lens (6-Bit) - Black:

In my photographic journey so far, the 35 Summicron is responsible for at least 50% of my very best pictures. I have been seeing the World thru 35mm eyes since my first version in 1980. The new aspherical 6-bit version is as sharp as ever, with wonderful coloration, -0- distortion, and a certain luminous contrast. It retains important fine detail at 20X enlargement; which creates a new universe when shooting exotic plants or architectural landmarks. Truly flawless!

A nice compact lens that produces sharp results in most situations. However, I have found it to be subject to unacceptable flare if there is a bright light in or near the subject. And the price includes a Leica brand premium which may or may not be warranted.

The combination of this incredible lens with the M9 body just makes wonder. The color rendering, the luminosity, and the sharpness of it all, just make my favorite hobby even more enjoyable. This lens makes it even clearer that the limit is solely my ability to see the shot or not. No excuses anymore ;)

This is my first Leica lens and there is something truly magical about the image quality -- both the crispness and the tonality. I find subtleties in the colours that I could barely make out with the naked eye. Of course, built quality is also exceptional. I thought it was expensive when I first considered it -- it is, but it's absolutely worth it.

Having both of the non asph 35 Summacron and Summalux lenses, I hesitated about getting this lens, but after using it, I am convinced that it does a better job than either of the other 35's. Pictures are crisper and more evenly lit across all stops. It makes a perfect one lens outfit on the M9, because the sharpness and picture quality even after cropping down obviates the need for a 50 mm lens in most cases.

If you want to get only one lens from Leica, this is the one. The build is solid. The bokeh and color rendition is wonderful. 35mm is perfect for street photography. F2.0 is fast enough without spending double the money. However, it is still too expensive for this category. The focus throw is longer than Summarit lens, but once get use to it, it will not be a problem at all.

I struggled with manual focus for the firt 600 actuations but once I broke myself in I am getting photo sharpness better than my D700 in autofocus. This lens is superb wide open. So good in fact that I rarely shoot stopped down. It is really that good. The focusing is butter smooth. I had a Voightlander as well and there was simply no comparison to the feel of the Leica focusing. A great buy if you can get a hold of one.
