A lot of reviews on this product focus on the flimsy build of the tripod parts. While this is true, I think it would be more useful to focus on the reason for the parts breakage - namely, operator negligence! This is my third 607 so I can speak to this cause with some authority.

I shoot 90% landscape and 10% animals with a Canon 60D. With a moderate length glass, my rig weighs about 7 lbs. I love the stability of the tripod. The built-in level and the smooth fluid head allow for an even transition while panning. This is extremely important when I am doing panoramas as the horizontal lock allows for a near-seamless motion along the nodal plane. The video arm is indespensible for my work with animals - who are constantly in motion. I am able to set my camera (aperature dependant f-11) then use a remote which I hold in the same hand that I use to control the arm of the tripod. With the other hand, I control the zoom. The tripod allows for the user to change the arm to either side to accomodate the dependant hand.

If you ever find yourself whining about the flimsiness of the tripod or the parts, just look in the mirror and you will see the author of your misgivings. While still in front of the mirror, think about the price. That will surely bring a smile to your face. If it doesn't, just think about all the spare parts you will have when your new tripod arrives from B & H.

This is as good a tripod as you can buy without cracking the three-digit price barrier. But its flexibility makes every pan a two-handed adventure, and since there's no adjustable spring or any way to vary the position of the camcorder on the head, it's likely to tilt forward or back on its own unless you lock down the retaining wingnuts after every move.

For video work, this is purely an entry-level piece for tiny and/or extraordinarily well-balanced camcorders. I would advise anyone doing much camera movement to buy the more expensive -- but still reasonable -- Velbon Three-way Fluid Panhead and mounting it on a steady set of legs. This won't give you as light or cheap a rig, but it will give you a lot smoother and usable one without going spending-crazy.

Comments about Velbon Videomate 607 Aluminum Tripod:

I have been using two of these Velbon Videomate 607 tripods for several years, and have been very pleased with both of them. They are not all metal like most of the tripods built forty years ago, but they have the best fluid heads, very smooth on both the pan and tilt. The high quality head makes up for the plastic in the head, quick release plate, and knobs. The only down side is the tripod is not as stable when the center column is elevated. The pans are not as smooth when the column is extended. This is my only complaint. I have read many commments from users of more expensive tripods that were stronger, but with poor quality fluid heads.

Comments about Velbon Videomate 607 Aluminum Tripod:

This tripod is a nice, very affordable choice for small to medium sized mini-DV camcorders. It is pretty stable, the construction quality is good, the pan and tilt are reasonably smooth, and overall it is a bargain. There are certainly more sophisticated tripods available, but at much higher prices. (I have two of them for video).

Comments about Velbon Videomate 607 Aluminum Tripod:

I have three of these that I use for event videography. Although they pan fairly smoothly for the price, I mostly use these for holding relatively fixed camcorders. I aim the camera at a particular position on the stage and leave it there for a few minutes while I pan around with a more expensive Bogen rig. Then at a convenient time I move the camera on the Velbon to point at a different part of the stage. Sometimes I have all three of my Velbons within arms reach so that I can keep adjusting the area that each camera is covering during the performance.

I really like these tripods. They are lightweight but relatively sturdy. When travelling by air I can throw one of these in my suitcase and use it when I get to my destination. It isn't as smooth or as steady as my Bogen setups, but you can get very good results with it.

There are some things that I don't like about the units. The first is that they don't work very well with the column extended. When extended more than a very short amount, the plastic extension column will vibrate/oscillate for a while any time you bump the tripod. When I re-position the tripod and then let go of the handle, I often get 4-5 seconds of unusable video because the camera is vibrating. Even the anti-shake features of my cams can't compensate for the motion. Worse yet, people walking on wooden floors cause the cameras on the end of the columns to start vibrating. The bottom line is that unless you are on a concrete floor you can't reliably use these tripods fully extended. The column can only be extended a few inches before this effect comes into play. This is pretty limiting because the tripods aren't all that tall to begin with.

The second problem has to do with the friction knob that restricts the motion when the camera is panning up and down. It is a small knob, and very difficult to tighten the needed amount. My cameras are very lightweight, and it is still difficult to tighten these knobs enough to keep the cameras from tipping forward or back when you take your hand off of the control handle.

The bottom line is that these tripods are the best that I have found anywhere near this price for my specific needs. But they do have their quirks which you need to be aware of if you want to capture professional quality video.

It is a bit heavy for my liking, as I am always wanting to have a good travel tripod. Other than that, it comes with a very simple strap bag which makes carrying easy. It folds out fast, when fully extended, it still feels solid. The head pans and tilts smoothly. There are obviously better tripods out there but they are going to be heavier and at least double this price.

Comments about Velbon Videomate 607 Aluminum Tripod:

I have been using it for about a week with a tilt/pan head for videography. I bought it as a replacement for a cheaper (and lighter) general tripod, and I wish I had purchased it sooner. It is a delight using a sturdy tripod, even though it is a little heavier. It looks well built and positions and locks down securely.

I had no experience with the brand, and virtually bought a tripod that matched my price range. However, I was very impressed in every category. I needed a nice vertical rise with a crank, and this did quite well. Very fluid head too. Nice all around.

this head is a decent fluid head for pans and tilts. it is good for a very light rig but I wouldn't trust it for a big load due to the fact that it is so light. it is also a nice height, I am 5'5" and it puts my dslr just over my head if I were to extend the column all the way. its perfect for shooting video with a dslr but don't expect any portrait shots out of this head unleas you want to max out the vertical horizon and put your camera on the locking plate sideways. I wasn't to happy with the fact that I cant change the head, but its a good tripod for the money.

I bought my first Velbon in 1995 and just retired it. Yes, there were many broken plastic parts that I had to work around but the basic operation of the tripod was still solid. This replacement is essentially the same tripod/head with the same vulnerable plastic parts, but it is a trade-off I'm willing to make because it is SO light and the head is amazingly smooth for the price. You must treat it with care and even then pieces will eventually break, but did I mention the first one served me well for 17 years? BTW, extending the center column is something I would never do unless it was a lock-down shot (and be sure to tighen down the center column lock screw or you will get slack in the pan movement). Oh, my other tripod is a Sachtler.

Comments about Velbon Videomate 607 Aluminum Tripod:

I've used this model tripod for over 15 years. I now own four of them. I use them for occasional video shoots with two Sony TRV950 MiniDV camcorders. These tripods incooperate a smooth fluid head, a bubble balance, quick release for the camera, and quick and easy set up. They are very lightweight and carry easy out in the field in the supplied case. The feet are rubber but screw in to expose spikes for extra grip outdoors. The price is very reasonable for all the features. I honestly had trouble finding all these features on more expensive tripods. I've used the Videomate 607 for weddings, seminars, church services, interviews, plays, ect. with professional results. While I would recommend something a little heavier for more aggressive use, I find this tripod perfect for my video needs.
