Product Highlights
  • Multi-Coated (HMC)
  • Glass

The Hoya 46mm Neutral Density (NDX8) 0.9 Filter has several uses and offers the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film. They have no effect on color balance.

Multi-coated to minimize reflection at the filter surfaces which reduces flare and ghosting.

Neutral Density filters have four main uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure

Neutral Density Factors

2x = ND.3 (exposure adjustment = 1 stop, reduces ISO 1/2)
4x = ND.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops, reduces ISO 1/4)
8x = ND.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops, reduces ISO 1/8)
As one of the premier filter manufacturers, Hoya filters continue to made from quality glass assuring the photographer clear, sharp and accurate images
Hoya filters consistently provide even color all the way through the filter; All surfaces are ground and polished to specific thickness and tolerances

        Comments about Hoya 46mm Neutral Density (NDX8) 0.9 Filter:

        This filter is well built and produces nice colors and little to no color shift (though I'm not a pixel peeper). However, as with all filters I've used, there is a tendency to produce some flare. Using my OMD with its EVF I get a live preview of when flare will be present. As I move the camera around, the flare moves. The bare lens itself (Panaleica 25mm 1.4) is very flare resistent so this is the downside of introducing a filter over an impeccable piece of glass.

        Comments about Hoya 46mm Neutral Density (NDX8) 0.9 Filter:

        Doesn't seem to change the color that much. It produces ugly looking flare when shooting into the light, but all filters do that.

                A must for using f/1.4 in the daytime.

                ND8x ISO160 max.1s/4000 is JUST OK for using f/1.4 on a sunny day.

                    Comments about Hoya 46mm Neutral Density (NDX8) 0.9 Filter:

                    I bought this filter to use on my Panasonic/Leica 25mm f1.4 lens. It allows me to shoot with the aperture wide open in bright sunlight and make use of its shallow depth of field.

                    I keep Hoya multicoated filters on all my lenses, with which I've shot pictures for several books.
