Comments about Domke J-3 Journalist Shoulder Bag:

Have been searching for a compact bag to house my Sony a900 camera with Minolta 24-105 lens attached plus Minolta 100-300, Sony 20, and Sony 50 macro lenses and, of course, all the other stuff - filters, cleaning kit, batteries, cards, etc. Liked the idea of Domke canvas bags that fit close to the hip, but wanted a bit more equipment padding and more pocket space. Also purchased Domke FA-220 2-compartment insert and FA211 1-compartment (large) insert to replace the two flat inserts that came with the J-3. The FA-220 and FA211 fit perfectly in the bag and by stacking the above-mentioned lenses in the FA220 and putting the a700 with 24-104 attached lens in the FA-211, I can easily carry all I need in camera equipment. With a little re-arranging, I could carry my Sony 28 and Minolta 50 f1.7 lenses as well. Plenty of pocket space for all the other stuff with room left over. I can easily pull the camera out of the FA211 insert by its grip so a neck strap is not necessary and I don't have the weight of the camera/lens on my neck between photo ops. One of the two flat inserts that came with the J-3 now pads the outside wall of the front outside pocket and the other provides extra padding between the the FA-220/FA-211 inserts and the back wall of the bag. Also cut a piece of closed-cell foam to fit in the outside rear pocket (which I don't have another use for as yet) to make the bag even more comfortable on my hip. On the advice of other purchasers, I ordered the Domke FA-031 USPO Shoulder Pad when I ordered the J-3. Easily adjusted, once attached to the bag strap, and more than enough padding. Makes a photo outing more of a pleasure than a chore.Very pleased with bag and shoulder pad and appreciate free shipping as well.

Comments about Domke J-3 Journalist Shoulder Bag:

I will use this bag most of the time - carries 60D with grip and EF-S 15-85mm lens attached in main compartment with 70-200mm f/4 L held in place with velcro divider. Padded side pockets can hold flash or smaller lenses like 85mm f/1.8. Excellent bag - black ballistic nylon with sage green interior looks really sharp. This is a great bag - made in USA.
Domke logo is discreet as well on side pockets.

Comments about Domke J-3 Journalist Shoulder Bag:

I use it every day out on the working field. It's perfect for a photojournalist. Especially if you shoot with one or two lenses. It fits one 1D mark4 with lens attached and up to three more lenses and additional stuff like memorycards and flash etc. You will also fit one of these bodies with no lens attached in the side pockets. The only thing I'm really missing is a well fitting raincover. The bag in it self can take quite some rain I've noticed, but for sand storms dust etc. The bag is not sealed as it has no zipper. It's cool that you never need to close it with the hook, you can keep it open with fast access and it will keep the stuff inside even in rougher terrain with the velcro alone.

Comments about Domke J-3 Journalist Shoulder Bag:

I'm a bag addict, let's get that out of the way. I will never say this is the ONE bag to have. I'll say this is A great bag to have. As a working photojournalist living in PR I needed a bag where I could put all my gear to walk around when I park my car. I don't leave gear in the car when I park it. This is the perfect bag for THAT. I can put both of my 5dII's on the outside cushioned pockets. My 3/4 lenses in the inside dividers, cards, stroke, batteries and off camera cord in the front pocket. I still have room for my iPhone, keys, biz cards and other things. It's black and discreetly branded. It's water repellent and nicely build (like everything Domke). This is one of about 4 Domke's I own. For weddings I use a different bag 'cus I carry more gear. Domke's will last you forever.

Comments about Domke J-3 Journalist Shoulder Bag:

I've had this bag for four years now, and it is my go-to shooting bag - sports events and weddings.

My one unsatisfied wish with this bag would be another inch of depth for the Nikon 70-200 f2.8. Carried vertically, this lens sticks out about 1 1/2 inches above the main compartment, though the padded top flap, with its snug fit, does protect the back of the lens. To get around this problem I made some inserts using Domke's rigid foam velcro-secured insert kit. These hold My D300 lens down, mounted on the 17-55 2.8, which allows carrying the 70-200 lying down. It just fits, widthwise, with an additional foam pad underneath. The D300 body, perched on top of the 17-55, overlaps it. I haven't purchased a battery pack grip for my D300 yet, but if I do, it will fit fine in this overlap configuration. This is a good set-up when you can get by on only three or four lenses in the main compartment, which is almost always on a shoot if you use zooms.

The end compartments are great for flashes - so well padded that I can carry both an SB800 and an SB900 without their bulky cases, which gives room to spare. I also bought a third end pocket insert for the front pocket, to be able to carry a back-up camera body there.

At the back of the bag, the big main flap is attached slightly down from the back of the main compartment, leaving about a two inch vertical space along the back where the outside back of the main compartment and the beginning of the main flap overlap. I use this space to run a black ballistic nylon monopod case, that only sticks out about 1 1/2 inches on either side of the bag. One safety pin and some velcro secure it and, since the color and material are the same, make it virtually a part of the bag. This set-up has no effect on the top flap still closing snuggly and with good rain protection. Not many photo equipment bags can accommodate a monopod so elegantly.

Despite wishful thinking that this bag is "discrete," I consider it far from stealthy. The shape is a little different, and it's obviously not a laptop bag, but that high-tech ballistic nylon screams that there's some kind of valuable equipment inside. And, with my bag, that monopod case across the top pretty well gives the contents away. My J3 still looks as new as the day I bought it. A weathered look, as with Domke's canvas bags, might help in this respect. Still, it would be the height of ingratitude to complain that the ballistic nylon is just too rugged for the bag's own good.

Overall, a great bag. If I ever had it stolen, I would be ordering a new Domke J bag the next day, with the only question being whether I want to step up to the bigger J2.

Comments about Domke J-3 Journalist Shoulder Bag:

This bag is perfect for my use. The plain, low-key style is exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a bag that I could use for casual walks and for formal events.

The material is a durable rugged nylon and the flaps are nicely shaped with large velcro patches to hold them down when they're not clipped in. The main pocket has a singly, strong metal clasp while the outer pockets have lighter, elastic plastic clips that can easily be released with a gentle pinch. The included padding is reasonably adjustable (the side pockets come with removable pads as well).

In addition to the non-removable shoulder strap (which has a nice grippy material), there is a short, canvas hand-carrying strap with the same clasps as the main, outer flap. The bottom of the bag also has two plastic "rails" which act as durable scuff pads to protect the bottom from rough surfaces.

As for storing gear, as-is, I store the following:
                    Rebel XSi body + grip + 16-35 F/2.8
                    85mm f/1.8
                    60mm f/2.8 macro
                    430EX II Flash
Batteries and memory cards in zipper pouch inside main flap

This setup spreads everything around nicely, while still keeping both side pockets empty. If I wanted to fit a 70-200, that would fit off-body and I would either stack the 85mm and 60mm, or move the flash to a side pocket.

                    Love this bag.

Comments about Domke J-3 Journalist Shoulder Bag:

This bag is just what it's advertised to be: a fully functional but smaller version of the J-1. I've found this bag to be just about perfect for bringing along the essentials and keeping a camera with a mounted lens handy.

Unlike the canvas Domke bags, the J-3 keeps its form whether fully loaded or not. It's built ballistic-nylon tough and is comfortable to carry. It's great as a padded "Grab and Go" bag that you can pack with essentials.

Being black and with only a single clip strap on the main compartment, it looks somewhat less like a camera bag on the street.

Although it can't be considered a bag that will carry all your gear, it will easily handle a camera with a single mounted (14-24, 17-35, 18-200) lens plus another lens stored vertically in the main compartment. (Even vertically, the 70-200 is a stretch.)

Two rather roomy side pouches can each handle one medium to large lens (80-400VR,) a flash or several primes plus batteries. The side pouches are lined with removable padding. A compact video handycam will also fit in one of these side compartments.

There's a zippered pouch in the main compartment flap that can be used for a limited amount of flash cards, batteries, remotes, cable releases and other accessories.

As much as I like the way the bag keeps its shape due to the padding, it requires a lot of space in a suitcase...much more than even the canvas F-1X which can be folded. When flying, I pack the J-3 with things like battery chargers, tripod heads and other "less delicate" kit inside a suitcase. (The camera, lenses, etc. are in a Pelican hardshell as carry-on baggage.) When I arrive, I can select the gear I want to carry and pack it in the J-3 for shoots.

I'm very satisfied with this bag. It's not suitable for really long lenses, of course, but it accommodates a moderate amount of gear and pads it nicely.

You can tell that this was designed by a working pro photographer. First of all it is rather nondescript and that's a good thing! Second it just works. You never have to search with this bag, everything is logically located. I carry 1 35mm with small zoom attached, along with a 100-400 and a 14-28, plus a handle mount flash. Additionally a portable hard drive, charger and converter and assorted batteries and cleaning supplies. All in all I have never felt space limited with this bag.

Comments about Domke J-3 Journalist Shoulder Bag:

This is a no-nonsense bag that can fit a Canon 5D and up to a 24-70/mid-range zoom mounted in the main compartment (with foam insert). The side pockets can swallow other lenses. The lid has a zippered compartment, and there are two pouch style pockets on the front and back. It probably was designed for a film type camera, but it has enough pockets to satisfy without making you search forever for your accessories. I originally used it with a Nikon F5 and 28-70.If you want to baby your equipment then add the padded foam inserts for the three main compartments. I did. You might consider the postman's style shoulder strap pad. It saves your shoulder and the soft leather backed rubber pad is very non-slip.I've had this bag for several years and it shows no signs of wear and tear. I like the way it forms to hug my body. The strap for the cover is not one of those plastic bayonet kind of devices. It is a spring steel hook and ring. Works great for one hand opening and closing, and you can tell by feel that it is secure.

Problems Encountered: Drawbacks? I wish it had one of those deployable rain covers like Lowepro AW bags. Also the top cover can slightly gap over the main compartment. Just be sure to give it a good tug if it starts raining. If you want something that doesn't look like a camera bag look to Crumpler.

Items I Recommend: Shoulder pad, padded inserts, and short strap over the main lid for quick grabs
