The EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens from Canon is a compact and lightweight zoom lens that offers superior optical performance plus a built-in Image Stabilizer. The IS system reduces blurred photographs caused by camera shake and allows for handheld photography in comparatively dim light without a flash or tripod. At the wide-angle end of the zoom range, the equivalent shutter speed gain is approximately 1.5 stops while at the telephoto end, it is approximately 2 stops.

In addition, the lens has an Ultrasonic Autofocus Motor (USM) for faster and quieter AF operation, and the pulse control diaphragm (EMD) ensures precise aperture control. manual focus override is supported for precise manual control even in AF mode. The minimum focus distance throughout the zoom range is 20".

The Optical Image Stabilization (IS) system is composed of a pair of gyro sensors to detect vertical and horizontal motion and a microprocessor that compensates for this motion by shifting special lens elements in parallel with the perceived movement. The IS system reduces blur in images shot in dim light and at long focal lengths.
The internal focusing mechanism allows the front of the lens to remain stationary and to easily accommodate specialty filters, such as polarizing filters.
An Ultrasonic Autofocus Motor (USM) provides fast, smooth and quiet autofocus action which is particularly important when shooting video with this lens.

On a Canon T2i I had been using just the 50mm f/1.8 with reasonably good results, but was limited by the lack of a zoom. I am just the average dad taking pictures of my kids running around in daylight or at various activites in-doors at school events. They don't pose or stay still. I was looking for a light-weight all-purpose "inexpensive" lens useful both indoors and outdoors and for action.

As the pros will tell you such a lens does not exist or is unaffordable.

This Canon 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 lens has many of the features on my list and works pretty well as a walk-around lens. While it is a hefty 500g lens, with the T2i body it does not feel heavy when carried around walking all day. Zoom creep did not occur if I left the lens at 28mm when walking.

The lens appears well-constructed with a smooth movement of the zoom and quiet auto-focus. I purchased the refurbished lens from B&H for a price lower than that on Canon's website. It arrived in a Canon box with a 90-day warranty from Canon.

I previously had a Canon 18-55 mm lens on an Xti and had not taken many pictures at angles less then 30mm. The range of this lens is ideal for my needs. The image stabilization-IS while probably of a previous generation is a new and welcome addition for me. More shots at slower shutter speeds are usable. I can get decent pictures in good light outdoors and indoors and by using a flash with low light indoors. At low light however, I still prefer the 50 mm f/1.8 as I am not fond of using the flash.

I would recommend this lens for anyone looking for a general purpose lens.

I like this lens. I don't really really like it, or love it, or dislike it, or hate it. I just sort of like it. It's nice and sturdy feeling, and has a great zoom range on my crop sensor which serves as a sweet mid-range telephoto (with the 1.6 crop factor I get a nice 45-205mm range).

It doesn't do great in low light but hey, how many zooms in this price range actually do? If you buy a lens that specifies it can't open up past 5.6 on the long end then you are made fully aware that it won't shine when the sun sets. I knew this going in, but I accepted it for the combination of price, zoom range, and the fact that I can use it on a full frame if need be. Lens creep is terrible, but for less than two bucks I got a pack of latex elastic hair bands and I slip one in the barrel crack and that takes care of that.

The really bad thing on this lens is how much dirt and dust it lets into the deep internals; you can look through the front of the lens and see the sandbox sitting there under the glass that you cannot access to clean.

It does its job ok, and image quality is an upgrade from the kit lenses but not by a huge longshot. I don't regret buying it but in retrospect wish I'd saved up another couple of hundreds for something a little better.

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

The lens doesn't seem to do well in low light. When the lens is pointed down, it has insuffient friction to maintain the zoom. So if you point it down, it zooms out fully. I find this highly irritating. In good light, it performs well throughout its length. I've had limited experience with the macro function, but it seems to do well.

I remember using this lens back in the film days. It worked well, but now with digital I like the images more. I am using it on a Canon 6D and since it is full frame, it is very particular about the quality of the lens. Edges and vignetting are not too bad depending on how you use it. I also looked at the 24-70mm f4L and the quality compared is close in the center. I don't think it would be worth spending an extra $ - for my situation.

I was looking for an all-around lens after buying the 5d mark III because the EF-S lenses that I had did not work with the new camera. This lens really surprised me with it's performance.

Now all I need is this lens instead of my other 2 expensive lenses that I used to carry around.
For the price it's worth a try and I know you will be satisfied and surprised.

I would highly recommend this lens.

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

I use this lens as my "walk around" lens on my Canon t3i. I shot about 200 photos in Disney World and was pleased with all of them except those in low lighting conditions. But that was expected from a lens like this at this price range. The only gripe I have is that it is very heavy. After carrying it around all day, you really feel it on your neck.

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

For the price and features, I'd have to say this is a good deal for the money. I have two copies of this lens, and gotten consistent shots from both. As mentioned in a lot of reviews, lens creep is pretty bad, but I can easily overlook that with the common fix. Its nice to have the IS and USM in a lens that to me, is a good walk around lens. Color, sharpness are always good on both my copies. Overall, very happy with this lens.

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

It's amazing that these still sell well. This lens was designed as a mid-tier all-around zoom for 35mm film cameras. That market tier no longer exists with digital, now it's an odd duck out. On a cropped sensor dslr like 7D, it's a 45-215 lens lacking any wide angle capability what so ever with very pedestrian apertures throughout the range. I can see why some people are happy with it for national parks, but it's not an all-around lens by any definition. It's true that Canon does not produce a no-brainer all-around zoom for cropped sensor cameras, but they do have some options and you are better off with a 15-85 or 17-85 if you are looking for all-around. On a full frame DSLR, it's an option, but FF DSLRs are pretty expensive compared to film DSLRs and if you are going that route, it makes a lot more sense to spending a couple hundred more for the 24-105 F4L. It's superior in virtually every way and can be had regularly for ~500-600.
