Questions? Ask our experts:

The Hoya 67mm NDx400 HMC Filter is a solid neutral density filter that enables a 9-stop increase in exposure length. The optical 2.7 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

This filter features a three-layer HMC multi-coating, which provides 98-99% light transmission and helps to reduce internal flare and reflections. It is constructed from high-quality optical glass for notable image clarity and is set in a durable aluminum filter ring.

2.7 ND filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a slower shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a 9-stop reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.
Three-layer multi coating helps to minimize internal reflections and ghosting and maintain an overall neutral color balance.

Purchased this filter to photograph a solar eclipse, something this filter makes possible (not to be used for viewing an eclipse, just photographing). However, it became nearly impossible to clean after I accidentally touched the glass leaving a small smudge. I was very hesitant to try cleaning the smudge after reading about the cleaning woes on this filter, but decided to give it a try anyway — after all, it should be clean. Hoya advises to only use a soft cotton cloth and water to clean the lens without damaging the coating. I tried, and failed several times. Despite my best effort, wiping the lens dry left countless dust specs that were noticeable in photos. The closest I came was rinsing it thoroughly and letting it air dry, yet that still left water marks. I've read others have tried lens cleaning solutions and a lens pen, yet few seem to have success that way either. Unfortunately, I don't feel that I can review this filter based on the quality of the optics, since it was hardly used. Based on the maintenance issues, I'm hesitant to recommend it. However, if you can keep it clean, this filter allows long exposures during daylight, makes solar photography possible, and doesn't noticeably impact color.

Just what i needed for my landscape images. Image quality is good; can't tell a decrease in sharpness. Does exactly what it is supposed to do which is decrease light by 9 stops.

Comments about Hoya 67mm NDx400 HMC Filter:

I had been struggling with using long exposures for creative blurring of moving objects and people but couldn't get the results I wanted. Then I read about neutral density filters and bought this one. Right away I started getting more of the images I wanted. I've owned a number of Hoya filters over the years and have always been impressed with their quality. When not on my camera, this one will always be in my bag.

I bought this to replace the HiTech ProStop 2.4 (85x85).

What a revelation. Only a slight colour cast, easily corrected (unlike HiTech), and much higher contrast and sharpness.

Excellent product! Super fast delivery door-to-door (Kudos to B&H on this one).
Filter easy to screw into my lens. Minor color cast (easily corrected in PP). And yes, I second other user reviews, it is a bit hard to clean it, specially sea water spray (environment where I use this filter the most) - so it get minus one star in my review. However, it will not stop me from using it (I like this filter better than my other 10-Stop filter from another famous brand).

I used the filter to shoot waterfalls. What I liked about it was the ability to use longer exposures even in the sunshine. What I didn't like was the work of actually using the filter. It takes some practice to obtain the correct exposure and you cannot see through the filter once it is on. Loved the end results! Would recommend.

I've used this filter several times now and it has done everything it was supposed to do. It cuts the light by 9 stops. The exposure was even. It does add a color cast that isn't present without it, though that is common with such filters. The cast was easily correctable with white balance adjustments.
