Questions? Ask our experts:

The Hoya 77mm NDx400 HMC Filter is a solid neutral density filter that enables a 9-stop increase in exposure length. The optical 2.7 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

This filter features a three-layer HMC multi-coating, which provides 98-99% light transmission and helps to reduce internal flare and reflections. It is constructed from high-quality optical glass for notable image clarity and is set in a durable aluminum filter ring.

2.7 ND filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a slower shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a 9-stop reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.
Three-layer multi coating helps to minimize internal reflections and ghosting and maintain an overall neutral color balance.

I use this to capture motion. Something Lightroom 5 can't do. Lately, I've been using it just after sunrise and just at sunset. I get about 10-20 second shutter at ISO 100. This allows some blur in the vegetation keeping the earth clear/sharp. Also, great for morning sun and tall waterfalls of 10ft+. It increases the exposure for that smooth water effect. It does get fingerprints of oil. But I just wipe it down pretty firm, and it cleans up well. When I first got the filter, I took great care and used gentle pressure to wiped it, and the gentle wipe does not work well. I found using a breath and firm wipe with a microfiber gives me better results on removing fingerprints.

This filter serves its purpose. However, the coating got sticky in the heat. I tried wiping it off with a microfiber cloth and the coating smeared. I dampened the cloth and that created scratches and swirls.
It says not to use any chemicals on it. I guess H2O is a chemical.
    For the money, very disappointed.

A name i've come to rely on and am never been disappointed. Great for long exposures where you want the water or sky blurred to smokey viscosity. Great for slowing down the shutter to use fast lenses on bright sunny days

Great filter. A must have for any long exposure. Great glass and heavy. I don't mind it being heavy cause that most of the time means quality. You can really feel the quality in this lens filter.

Comments about Hoya 77mm NDx400 HMC Filter:

Unlike the variable ND filter I have (cheap one) this filter has consistent density all across the view with wide angle lenses. You can barely make out the subject in daytime but using the cameras live-view allows you to see the image normally and zoom in to focus without having to remove the filter constantly.

The longest exposure I got with it on a bright overcast day at iso 100 was around 30 seconds at f22 in my first test. If you need a longer exposure, you might consider a second filter or one that's darker (if there are any).

I didn't notice any colour shift either.

To slow things to a crawl, use this filter. A 1/500 shutter speed will result in a one second exposure using this filter. This is the filter to get if you want dreamy water and cloud shots.

I was considering geting the Big Stopper. Finding this 9stop filter was a better fit for my budget. It works great.
