To the begin I used my Singh-Ray ND grad filters manually. I thought I could save some weight, space and money by bypassing the filter holder and the different adapter rings for my different sized lenses. It turned out to be a big mistake. Quite often I had the filters reflection in my pictures and shots that I thought initially to be great were ruined. I decided in purchasing the filter holder as well as the different adapter rings (52mm and 77mm). Since than the shots are clean and the ND grad filters are precisly placed where it should be and without any reflections.
The adapter ring is screwed to the lens and the filter holder snaps into the ring providing the filter a secure hold.
