I've included quite a few measurements in this review, sinceI carefully considered these factors before ordering thebag. My goal: A small, discreet, conveniently designed,well-made bag that would carry my camera gear along with afew small personal items. Mission accomplished with thisbag! If you have similar equipment, you'll probably lovethis bag.I ordered the optional one-compartment 3 x 6 x 8 insert, and my Nikon D80 SLR with lens attached rides on its back inthe insert. The zoom lens is rather large -- 4 from camerabody to filter when fully retracted. The optional insert made a big difference in my enjoyment ofthe bag. It's easier to slip the camera in and out, and thecamera receives extra protection without the bag becomingtoo bulky. Also, for some reason, the bag now stands up onits own. Before, it tended to need to be propped up againstsomething. I stash a flash in the 3 x 4 x 8 insert that came with thebag, but it would be fine for a couple of lenses if youdon't mind stacking items. The flash, which is 3-1/2 x 2 x6-1/2 inches, also fits in one of the front pockets butjust barely. I personally wouldn't carry the flash in thefront pocket because I prefer the more spacious feel, easeof access and extra protection of the insert, but it'sdoable. The two inserts fit well within the bag, but perhaps notperfectly. Together, they might be about 1/2 too long.Perhaps it's by design, but they fold just a little. It'snot bothersome. They have kind of molded themselves to theshape of the equipment. Domkes inserts are clever, and Iappreciate the way you can remove them with contents intactand can remove the individual foam paddings from whateversides you want. The bag's pockets have plenty of room to carry small itemssuch as filters, a wallet, a couple of manuals or magazines, etc. There are hooks on each side -- handy for carrying anextra pouch for more gear or even lunch. The bag has aplastic bar that runs the length of the top flap; I supposeit helps keep everything in place. One of the main reasons I chose this particular bag is thatit's very discreet. It doesn't look like a camera bag atall, and the Domke logo is hidden under the main flap. The construction quality and materials appear to be superb.I've owned another canvas Domke bag for about 25 years. Iteven went through several years of professional use, and itstill looks and functions great. It doesn't appear thatDomke has scrimped on quality over the years.

Problems Encountered: As reviews elsewhere mention, the main hook is somewhatdifficult to open and close. Domke says this is to make itmore pilfer-proof, and it probably does. After I used thebag for a few weeks, either I got used to it or it loosenedup a bit. Still, I'd prefer an easier hook and haveconsidered replacing it.

Nice bag but a little too small for DSLR

I can carry my Rebel DSLR body, a flash and two lenses but it's a tight fit. Partition not designed for carrying my camera with lens attached.

Very sturdy. I use it to carry it around and have traveled internationally. The bag still looks very new except for being a bit dusty. It really protects my camera well!

Comments about F-803 Camera Satchel Shoulder Bag (Olive Drab):

I've been shooting since the early 70's, have owned lots of bags but keep coming back to Domkes. This bag was purchased to carry my Fuji XE-1, X100s, and Xf lenses 55-22 , 35 and 14mm. A lot more comfortable to carry and inconspicuous than my Billingham Hadley Small. I don't want to carry any more than this will hold. It molds to my hip and is easy to work out of, most bags are just too bulky.

Comments about F-803 Camera Satchel Shoulder Bag (Olive Drab):

A great little satchel that won't hit every seat as you make your way down the airline aisle. People who obsess over padded protection won't like these canvas bags but I've never had a problem.

In my configuration, I put a Nikon D7000 with short zoom, speedlite SB-800, 2 primes stacked in the movable compartment, filters in the front bag pockets and an iPad in the back pocket. The D7000/lens sits sort of cocked diagonal in the open space and I have the padded divider moved next to it and the flash is a tight fit next to that. The SB-800 will fit in one of the outside pockets but I didn't want the bag to bulge any wider than necessary. As someone else said, not sure why some colors cost more than others. Ask the Domke Marketing dept.

Looking for the Domke website I found that it is within the Tiffen site. It's a confusing website if you're looking for easy listing and views of the different bags. You'll get better pictures, views and descriptions on the B&H site.

Comments about F-803 Camera Satchel Shoulder Bag (Sand):

This is my first Domke bag but certainly not my last. It's a tiny bit smaller than I thought it was going to be but this not a problem as its neat size makes it look smart and snazzy, while remaining very functional. I'm 6'3" and I find the strap is long enough. An extra couple of inches would have been nice for room to move but not essential. The finish is very pleasing to the touch and it feels very durable. I'm actually using it more as a man-bag than a gear bag at the moment so the lense padding that came with tbe bag makes a great water bottle/thermos comparment. The front pockets are nice and deep but the ones on the flap are a litte tight. Good for cards, keys and a cell phone though.A couple of little pouches inside the main pouch would have been good for pens and bits and pieces but you can always add the removable pouches that are sold separately. The most important thing is that my wife likes it. She's a very stylish lady and didn't want me carrying a camera bag around for day to day business but she thinks it looks very cool and smart. Phew. Thanks Domke! All in all a great little all purpose bag that has already earnt some nice compliments from friends. I'll definitely get a Domke again, only next time I'll go a bit bigger so I can fit my laptop in as well.

Perfect size for small camera (ie. Sony DX-7 or rangefinder), w/2-3 lenses and a flash. Tough, waterproof canvas, discrete. Zip pocket for filters/extra chips, etc. Two outer velcroed pockets, covered by flap, can hold notebook, glasses, phone. OK, common complaint, the front buckle is clumsy. And no padding on bottom. But it comes w/Domke padded insert and other Domke touches, like the gripper strap going all the way around the bag and compatible w/Domke line of inserts.

Comments about F-803 Camera Satchel Shoulder Bag (Black):

I've always been a fan of Domke products, in particular the F-802 bag, which functions just as well as an everyday messenger bag as well as one that can easily carry a full DSLR setup and fairly big lenses. But after adding a Fuji XE1 mirrorless to my setup, I needed a smaller bag for the occasions when I did not need to haul all the glass along - and the F-803 fits perfectly. All of the benefits of the F-802 bag which I know and love, in a smaller, lighter size. It accomodates the camera, a number of lenses (depending on the size, but mirrorless have smaller lenses compared to the big L glass) and the back pocket will accept a full-sized iPad.

This bag is great for carrying around a small camera kit without it looking like a camera bag. I usually use it for a small MFT kit and a Ricoh GRD IV or a film camera. It has big pockets for film, batteries, etc.

One thing that I don't like it the hook/clip on the front because I often need two hands to open or close it properly.

Comments about F-803 Camera Satchel Shoulder Bag (Sand):

I am always on the lookout for a good "street" bag that will hold a couple of Leica M's and some lenses. This bag is great in many respects. It will easily hold 3 M bodies with lenses. I haven't tried it yet but I'm sure I could get a few more lenses in as well. The bag is well made and looks very sharp without being flashy and grabbing attention. I plan to use this bag for many years and suspect I will like it even more after it's broken in. Having said that, I gave it 4 stars for a couple of reasons. The clip that holds the flap is not super quick to undue. It's secure which is it's purpose but I think the clip could probably be improved for ease of use without compromising security. It also comes with minimal dividers. Sure you can buy more but I've never purchased a bag that was this sparse on dividers and configuration options. My last criticism is that I wish there were more in the way of pockets and places to keep things (i.e. non-camera items, like keys, wallet, phone, cards, etc.) organized. Anyway, these are minor issues. As I said it's a great bag and I am glad I got it. It's just that my search for the perfect bag hasn't ended.

After going back and forth amongst Think Tank Retrospectives, Crumpler Million Dollar Homes, as well as Lowepros and Tamracs, finally settled on the Domke F-803. The main reason--it's size! I have a micro 4/3rd kit and most bags are just too fat/thick for my taste. This is one of the thinnest (slim profile) bags you will find. Just finished carrying my gear around San Francisco for a week and it worked out great. Here's what I fit: Panasonic GX-1, Panasonic 14mm f2.5, Panasonic 25mm f1.4, and Panasonic 45-175mm, a 3 filter filter-pouch, spare battery, spare sd cards, lenspen, cleaning cloths, and still had room for travel brochures and small souvenirs that I bought throughout the day. It's a very well-thought out design. I do wish they had built in some sort of straps to allow attachment of a tripod bag to the bottom. On another note, the Sirui T-005 tripods actually fit in these bags (with everything else if you take out the insert--but things get a little tight).Overall an excellent bag. My first Domke purchase, and very pleased with their product. Very discreet also for those going for that basic messenger bag look.

Comments about F-803 Camera Satchel Shoulder Bag (Black):

I bought it because my billingham hadley pro insert was in a bad shape and when I saw the price for replacement I prefered buy another bag.

                          What I fit in :
-leica mp with one lens in the insert
-konica hexar AF on one side
-1 or 2 other leica lens on the other side
-notebook and lenspen in the front pocket
-films in the other front pocket

                          or

-leica MP with one lens in the insert
-nikon d7k with lens on the other side.
-notebook and lenspen in the front pocket
-films in the other front pocket

The bag doesn't look like a camera bag.
It is well built and nice.

The only issue is that the top of the bag is a little bit too rough for my back when I carry it like a messenger bag.

Comments about F-803 Camera Satchel Shoulder Bag (Olive Drab):

The most I like about this bag is that it is multifunction. To be honest, although the build quality and look are above average, it simply is a messenger bag and as such can be used to carry documents, laptop, etc. However, with the insert, it makes a perfect camera bag for small systems (Olympus PEN in my case). It is smaller than it looks, which is perfect for me, but certainly not for someone with a big camera. Protection is good, but not extreme (which may be a con, not a pro, but it saves space and weight). The strap is wide, grippy and comfortable. The clip to open anc close is certainly secure, but there is no quick access option (no velcro either, which I like but ages poorly, so it's not necessarily a bad thing). The two tiny pockets on the flap are to be used seldom, unless you want to scratch your hand eveytime you get into those tight spaces. It is nice looking, but certainly not a design statement (which is good not to draw attention, but rather informal, like a student bag). Have used it for weeks and so durability is yet to be determined; however, keep in mind that it is water-repellant at best, it will not protect your gear under anything but a light drizzle...

Small, light, strong and stealthy this bag is great for holding a Micro Four Thirds camera, flash, and a good number of lenses. Pockets are great for holding filters. Unlike other bags which close by velcro which can fail and result in your camera gear falling from the bag, this bag uses a secure clip to close. The clip is also much quieter than velcro.

Only downside for M43 systems is that there needs to padded separators so that a number of lenses can be placed on top of each other. I'm solving this for now by placing the middle lens in a wrap.

I bought this bag after about a month of diliberation. I wanted something that I could carry my gear around Mexico City with without potential thiefs knowing I had thousands of dollars in camera equipment in my bag. This bag looks like any other messenger bag that is around, and it is about that size. I hold my D7 with a 50mm attached, 70-200mm, and all the extras and still have room for other things. It maybe a little on the light side for protection, but if you arent dragging it over jagged rock faces and banging it into everything you pass by it is more than enough to protect your equipment. In my opinion a great carry around bag for forgein travel!!!

I originally bought this bag to use as a camera bag. I'm a student so the idea of a messenger bag was an easy concept for me to digest. I've had it three years and I have been using it every day since I bought it as just a multi purpose bag / backpack / camera bag. It's extremely durable and has only worn slightly in three years. The double walled canvas offers great protection from the elements too. I have dropped this bag into several inches of water, and none of my books or papers were even damp. In fact the inside of the bag never had any moisture. This bag has paid for itself already, and has lots more mileage left in it.

The size is not too small for my needs. Almost too small for a binder, but will fit most books or a small laptop if you're considering other uses.

Comments about F-803 Camera Satchel Shoulder Bag (Sand):

I use this everyday to and from work. I got it because of the small profile compare to other camera bags.

I don't have much issue with the clamp (as long as you use two hands) to open and close it. It does lack a padding that some people might not like. There only seems to be padding at the side wall and at the bottom but it's not really too much.

The single insert that comes with it is kinda "blah". Has a thin layer of padding that when I did see it I was relived that I didn't get any additional inserts. My D7000 in the bag without any padding seems to move around a lot so I did a quick fix by getting thicker styrofoam and lining the inside of the bag with it using the insert that came with it as a spacer.

Also I wish the bag had a sightly longer strap since I am 6'1 and it does seem a little small. The strap is attached to the bag so unlike the J-803 which can be swap for a different or longer strap. But it does have grippy rubber lining to prevent the bag from moving around.

Definitely a good decision getting this bag if you want something small for a single body with a couple of lens. The next best thing is a Billingham which actually does not have any of the issue I've had with this bag but Billinghams are double the price or more. Overall it's a good bag, I got it because it does not look like a camera bag but now people think I have a laptop bag.

This is the 2nd Domke F-803 I've purchased from B&H. The first one I bought was the rugged waxwear version. I use that one for my Canon 7D. I use this sand colored one for my Panasonic GH1. The waxwear version is better and only a little bit more expensive, but I didn't want two of the same bag. I've sold my Lowepro holster-style bags because of the F-803. It's slim but fits a lot. It will fit a camera body with at least two lenses, plus a bunch of extras. The bag sits nicely against the body and doesn't get in the way when walking through crowds. There isn't a whole lot of padding but I feel my cameras are well protected. It also has some water resistance. The handle on top is so helpful when getting in out out of cars, buses or planes. The shoulder strap has some rubber lining which stops the bag from sliding off your shoulder. The front pockets are great for filters, batteries or memory cards. The back sleeve is great for thin items like a passport, pack of gum, etc. An iPad fits perfectly in the back sleeve. The two zippered pockets on the flap are very small and tight. Maybe good for business cards or a cleaning cloth. I just keep the little Domke ID tag that comes with the bag in there. One of the best things about this bag is the clip. It's metal and very secure. Can be a little awkward to open and close. You may need two hands to do so, but it's a lot nicer than a plastic clip or magnets which aren't secure at all. If I could add one thing to this bag it would be velcro silencers for the two front pockets, similar to the ThinkTank Retrospective bags. My only knock on this bag is the lack of customization with inserts. There just aren't any inserts made to fit this bag properly. The one provided does fit, but you need to work at it. The velcro strips aren't even within the main compartment. Once you force it, it fits alright. I didn't have this problem with the waxwear version though. The Domke F-803 is still the best camera bag I've owned (why I've bought 2). It's also nice that Domke offers a few different colors to choose from.
