Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

I really prefer the twist-lock hoods.

This newer design uses two push tabs and they are incredibly annoying to get lined up perfectly each time. It's not even like you can snap the hood on and then use the tabs to just remove the hood. You must use the tabs each time. The lock also seems very flimsy. I fear just carrying the camera on my shoulder and accidentally knocking into something would pop it off. The twist locks feel much more secure. I use hoods with all my lenses to protect against glare, debris, and fingers. This stupid locking design almost makes me want to throw it in the trash and risk the elements.

Why Canon designed something that uses more parts (translation - costs more money to manufacture) versus the established twist lock that was very simple, elegant, and secure is beyond me.

It works fine once it's on, but for some reason I have major issues getting it in place. As an event photographer, the last thing I want to do is be fiddling with lens hoods.

If the old ones exist with a traditional twist lock, then I suggest buying a used one of those. I'm already looking.

Comments about Canon ET-65 III Lens Hood:

Purchased at the same time as my Canon 85mm f/1.8 lens. Helps protect the lens and decreases flare. Only criticism is that the attaching mechanism is a squeeze type versus the L series screw-on.

Comments about Canon ET-65 III Lens Hood:

The build quality and interior coating all seem good enough, and the lens hood does a great job of cutting down sun flare. My only gripe is the snap-on design. Why Canon didn't stick to the previous screw-on mounting design found on the 50mm 1.4 hood is puzzling. The click-on design of the ET-65III is awkward at first, and seems like the slightest nudge could bump if off. You just have to be extra careful not to grab the camera by the hood as it rotates separately from the lens, and again it seems like it wouldn't take much to knock off the hood if its hit right on one of the two pinch tabs. Not a concern, though, if you're not clumsy and pay attention to your surroundings. For the record, you're obviously not supposed to grab the camera by the hood, but for those occasions when your sifting through your camera bag and you have the camera and lens facing up like me you don't want to grab this hood to slide the camera out of your way. I leave the hoods attached to my lenses, even in my bag.So the mounting design of the ET-65III is a bit clumsy, but over-all it's a great lens hood and I don't regret buying it.

        OEM as expected

        By TyrephotoATL

Comments about Canon ET-65 III Lens Hood:

I tried an aftermarket hood for my 100 1:2 and it was awful. Limped by for a long time, but finally slapped leather and drew some green.... Price was what you'd expect from Canon. Fits well, covers the glass, no more, no less. Should have bought it WAY earlier than I did...but I was mad that the hood wasn't included with the lens. Don't punish yourself for Canon's tactics. If you have the 100/85 that this fits, just buy it and save yourself the heartache.

Good for protecting the front element. I got it so I can take it in and out of my bag on location and not have to worry about caps.

The pinch design is a little flimsy compared to the twist on hoods for my other lenses, I could see it breaking easy. That being said, mine has held up great.

As far as image quality, rarely does a hood affect contrast. In certain lighting situations to can see a very slight difference, but not enough for that to be the only reason to buy.

I have lens hoods for ALL of my lenses. I can't think of a good reason NOT to.

I read reviews of this lens hood, and reviews of the 3rd party alternatives. Lots of people were complaining about the way this lens hood mounts to the lens. It's definitely different than my other lenses, but so far, it's been OK.

Got this for my 85 1.8... I wish Canon made this with the old twist and lock mechanism, since this push-to-lock thing can get a little tricky at times and possibly break over time. Once its on, however, it does stay on and due to its solid construction(both outside and inside)is well worth the extra cash over third party offerings.

I must admit that I much prefer the twisting style lens hoods. They seem more secured in place, and give the impression that they won't break if something hits them. This hood is not much more expensive thant than the third-party brands, and has a velvety material on the inner surface which should help preventing light from bouncing around.

Comments about Canon ET-65 III Lens Hood:

I would prefer a twist on lens hood much like my other L lenses. This hood clips on falls off easily if you set the camera down. Overall the build quality feels a bit flimsy so I'm not sure how well this hood will do to actually protect the lens should it get dropped or bump into anything. The hood will easily pop off and not provide much protection for the lens.

Comments about Canon ET-65 III Lens Hood:

After trying a cheaper brand, I must say, there ain't nothing like the real thing. While I'm disappointed Canon does not include this with the relevant lenses, this is a good hood. It is actually possible to attach and detach this hood in a reasonable amount of time, and the felt lining inside is perfect for the job of absorbing light.

                                  Good original hood.

It may be little to expensive but I actually was suprised that it is a new version.
It has two buttons that U need to squeez to put or remove it from lens.
And it has fabric inside which is anti reflective and helps catch small pieces of dust.
