The superior-quality EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens from Canon features a brilliant maximum aperture of f/1.4, along with the superior natural image quality of Canon L-series lenses. Such a wide aperture is ideal for low-light imaging and for exacting depth of field control. An advanced floating mechanism and aspherical lens element achieve extremely sharp, distortion free pictures from infinity to its closest shooting distance of 1.0'. With a ring-type ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) and rear focus, autofocus is fast and virtually silent. A wide focusing ring provides comfortable manual focus, and the filter ring remains stationary for ease of use with polarizers and other special effects filters. Full time manual focus override enables precise manual focus even when in AF mode.

Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture is effective in low light shooting and enables shallow depth of field control.
An ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) provides precise, fast and quiet AF action.
Full-time manual focus override allows for precise manual focus control at all times, even in autofocus mode.
An aspherical lens element reduces aberrations and optimized Super Spectra lens coatings minimize ghosting and flare.

Use it and abuse of it! It does work at 1.4 and that's a long way from 4.0. Both aren't perfect at the largest aperture (I'm comparing a 24-105 4L with the 35 1.4L), but since buying the 35 I stopped using the zoom. What is great? Fast.
I bought it Halloween afternoon so I could use it at night and it was just wonderful. It always was my first choice of lens, but I could not convince my wife that although it is NOT a zoom it does deliver "nice" pics. She didn't note the difference of the lenses but DID acknowledge the improvement of the pictures...
IF you, amateur as I am, think you might need the large aperture for kids inside, go for it. For a closer comparison I used for a long time a Sigma 50mm 2.8f macro EX. But the 35mm gives me more keepers.
It took me 4 years to buy the lens and now I realize that I should have done it before (before upgrading twice the body and buying the L zoom). Much better had I kept my EOS 300D (the lowest Rebel at that time)with this lens instead of using the 5D MarkII with the lenses I had...

This is a very good wide angle prime lens from Canon. The focal length is commonly one that can be a walk around lens. It is well balanced and easy to hold during shooting. The lens is not overwhelmingly sharp at the wide apertures but good bokeh. The corners are not so great at these apertures. THe sharpness improves at f2.8 and by f4 very sharp and decent corners on a full frame sensor. The lens does suffer from a bit more CA than i had hoped. Overall stopped down it is an outstanding landscape lens. At the wide apertures, good for portraits.

This lens can really produce some great photos. Lovely contrast, color, and bokeh. However, it's a pretty soft lens. Plenty of sharper lenses out there...

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens:

If I had to pick one lens, it would be this one. I find the 35mm length to be super versatile for just about anything especiailly protraits. It's wide, but not too wide. I love having a solid lens to go between a 50mm and 28mm, plus the fast aperture is excellent for low light situations (weddings, photojournalism, etc.) when flash isn't useable. Colors are great, bokeh smooth, slient focusing and excellent build quality. If you're looking for a great go to lens that can handle any situation you throw at it, look no further!

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens:

My list of lenses include 24-70 2.8, 70-200 4.0, 85 1.8, 35 2.0 & 50 1.4.The lens most often on my camera was the 24-70 due to the flexibility and wonderful output of an "L" lens. The colors were rich and bokeh pleasing. I would turn to my primes in low light situations or if I needed to go light. That all changed with the 35 1.4. This lens is "magic" and makes the reality I see with the naked eye BETTER. The colors are saturated and bokeh is creamy smooth. It also seems to have a wider range of contrast and cinematic effect. It is light-weight (compared to my zooms) and has been on my camera since the day I bought it. I've recently sold the 50 1.4 and the 35 2.0 and if it wasn't for my "paid gigs" I would probably sell my zooms. For personal use this could be my "one and only" lens.Life is short...don't wait.

I use this lens daily everywhere I go. It fits in my purse perfectly that I don't need to get another bag just for the camera. The main subject in my photos are my children. This lens takes very sharp and natural photos which saves me a lot time in editing. It works well for close up shots as well as group ones. Just love it!

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens:

I've had this lens for about a year and a half now and I find it on my camera more than ANY other lens. Its versatile and good in low light.

It was my first expensive lens purchase and I was bit apprehensive at first but once I started shooting with it I never looked back!

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens:

I got this lens exactly one week ago at B&H. My first "real" picture with it was a posed theater shot under the stage lights for use as a lobby display. The separation of the groupings of actors in the shot was almost like 3D. The color rendition was outstanding. It was shot with my 6D at a distance of about 20' using a monopod, ISO 800, f5.6, 1/25th.
As with any wide lens, you need to remind yourself of inherent pitfalls: distortion and softness at the edges at wide-open aperatures. But that's just part of the package and shouldn't really be viewed as a negative. I haven't used prime lenses since my days of film through an F-1. Now I will definitely be scouting out other primes in the "L" class. I think this lens is going to be on the camera quite a bit.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens:

i just love how this focal length is perfect for everyday uses. i use this lens everywhere i go and its perfect! when i shoot weddings this gives me perfect space when shooting the bride and groom getting ready in tight spaces. shooting in low light it really impressive, the wide aperture it gives doesn't disappoint. the only thing it could really improve on is the durability. i don't like how its plastic for an "L" lens and it should be water resistant. if you're spending that much money for lens, i expect to have great product that last for a while. overall amazing lens! get it!

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens:

I bought this lens to complement my 17-40 f4L and 70-200 ISf4L because I missed one lens for taking pictures mainly indoor without flash. I was thinking about the 50mm too, but I choosed 35mm because it is wider. I shoot with it several times and it is really gooood. The options were new Sigma 35mmf1.4 and new canon 35mmf2IS but I decided to go for L because one extra stop over the canon and future compatibility over the Sigma. I think canon will release new 35mm soon to beat Sigma (right now we are comparing new technology with about 15years old one). The only question I'm solving right now is if to keep it or return and wait for the new 35mm f1.4L II, but as I expect it will be more expensive :(
