The superior-quality EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens from Canon features a brilliant maximum aperture of f/1.4, along with the superior natural image quality of Canon L-series lenses. Such a wide aperture is ideal for low-light imaging and for exacting depth of field control. An advanced floating mechanism and aspherical lens element achieve extremely sharp, distortion free pictures from infinity to its closest shooting distance of 1.0'. With a ring-type ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) and rear focus, autofocus is fast and virtually silent. A wide focusing ring provides comfortable manual focus, and the filter ring remains stationary for ease of use with polarizers and other special effects filters. Full time manual focus override enables precise manual focus even when in AF mode.

Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture is effective in low light shooting and enables shallow depth of field control.
An ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) provides precise, fast and quiet AF action.
Full-time manual focus override allows for precise manual focus control at all times, even in autofocus mode.
An aspherical lens element reduces aberrations and optimized Super Spectra lens coatings minimize ghosting and flare.

Use it and abuse of it! It does work at 1.4 and that's a long way from 4.0. Both aren't perfect at the largest aperture (I'm comparing a 24-105 4L with the 35 1.4L), but since buying the 35 I stopped using the zoom. What is great? Fast.
I bought it Halloween afternoon so I could use it at night and it was just wonderful. It always was my first choice of lens, but I could not convince my wife that although it is NOT a zoom it does deliver "nice" pics. She didn't note the difference of the lenses but DID acknowledge the improvement of the pictures...
IF you, amateur as I am, think you might need the large aperture for kids inside, go for it. For a closer comparison I used for a long time a Sigma 50mm 2.8f macro EX. But the 35mm gives me more keepers.
It took me 4 years to buy the lens and now I realize that I should have done it before (before upgrading twice the body and buying the L zoom). Much better had I kept my EOS 300D (the lowest Rebel at that time)with this lens instead of using the 5D MarkII with the lenses I had...

This is a very good wide angle prime lens from Canon. The focal length is commonly one that can be a walk around lens. It is well balanced and easy to hold during shooting. The lens is not overwhelmingly sharp at the wide apertures but good bokeh. The corners are not so great at these apertures. THe sharpness improves at f2.8 and by f4 very sharp and decent corners on a full frame sensor. The lens does suffer from a bit more CA than i had hoped. Overall stopped down it is an outstanding landscape lens. At the wide apertures, good for portraits.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens:

The only lens that I use on my 5DII. Beautiful contrast and colour rendering. Snappy focus. Well balanced when attached to the camera body. In my opinion it renders better that my 35mm Summilux, however that may be due to the M9 sensor limitations. The 35L saves me a lot of time when post-processing. It needed minor in camera adjustments in order to focus accurately. I've uploaded some sample photos for the curious amongst the community.

I have rented this lens many times in the past, and am very happy to finally own it. It's always in my bag if I'm unsure of how much distance I will have from my subject. It's a great up-close lens without getting too much distortion. Very sharp. Would definitely recommend it.

I bought this to use side by side with the 24-105mm f/4 for my 5D Mark III. It is so gorgeous & tack sharp that I never want to take it off. I have been using it for many different scenes and nothing has disappointed me; landscapes, city/street scenes, & portraits. It's fantastic in low light, as well. Highly recommend.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens:

I shoot lifestyle, travel and portraits and this lens was bought so I'd have something faster than my 16-35 f2.8 in low light and as a 'walking around' lens. Just used it for the first time over the weekend while at a family wedding. I wasn't the wedding photographer (and I stayed out of her way. I am not a wedding photog) but shot casual family moments. Perfect. Crisp and sharp when I hit focus and easy to use, fast to focus and amazing in low light. I was hand holding night shots and nailed some things at lower ISO than I would have with the f2.8. For a 'real' wedding shooter it would be a super addition to the bag.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens:

I use it for a lot of still shots on my 6D and 5D mIII
It is a fantastic lens but for video you really have to go with IS lenses for handheld.
Although I use monopods just the extra security of IS helps a lot.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens:

After two weeks of renting this lens for a trip through Northern Italy, I placed my order last week from Switzerland with B&H- it arrived a few days later, and has already added several images to my new collection. Whether for portraits, wildflowers, or landscapes, this lens is proving itself indispensable. Now, of course, I'm faced with the dilemna of wanting to replace my current 50mm and 85mm (which are themselves fine lenses) with L-series lenses…all in good time.

Shipment from B&H was fast, product arrived as
predicted, well packed in box, box surrounded by bubble wrap within another box. I was unaware that the following where included lens hood, lens bag, and center squeeze lens cap. This was a nice bonus. The lens is everything others
have said, super sharp, well worth the money.

Fast lens and great for receptions

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens:

I've only practiced with this lens. I'll be taking it to a baby shower this weekend and a few weddings soon. I can't wait to see how it does at receptions.

My 2.8 lenses haven't been as great as I'd like at receptions or in low light places where OCF is difficult.

I'll add more to my review after I've had more time to use it in the field.

One thing I noticed is that is isn't light. I thought it wouldn't be as heavy but that's my fault for assuming and not checking the specs.

If recommend it to anyone needing low light or who likes the look of 1.4

This lens can really produce some great photos. Lovely contrast, color, and bokeh. However, it's a pretty soft lens. Plenty of sharper lenses out there...

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens:

If I had to pick one lens, it would be this one. I find the 35mm length to be super versatile for just about anything especiailly protraits. It's wide, but not too wide. I love having a solid lens to go between a 50mm and 28mm, plus the fast aperture is excellent for low light situations (weddings, photojournalism, etc.) when flash isn't useable. Colors are great, bokeh smooth, slient focusing and excellent build quality. If you're looking for a great go to lens that can handle any situation you throw at it, look no further!
