The EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Lens from Canon is a telephoto zoom lens ideal for day-to-day use because it is particularly light and compact, especially given its long focal reach. Able to magnify distant subjects, it also compresses the space between subjects within the frame and with a shallow depth of field at its longer lengths, it offers attractive out of focus bokeh. Its minimum focus distance is 4.9', even at the telephoto end of its zoom.

Versatile telephoto focal range ideal for portraiture and magnifying distant subjects. When used on an APS-C format camera the equivalent focal length range is 120-480mm.

I have a Canon EF 70-200 mm F2.8 lens that I have used for shooting ballet and similar performances (without flash, of course). But that lens is pretty heavy, which is a disadvantage for travel, and it won't fit into my Clik "fanny pack." Most of my focus now is landscapes. But Ion my travels recently encountered one of those opportunities where a zoom would have been very useful. The 75-300 mm lens is light enough for travel, and my initial shots of birds hanging out at our feeders have been quite impressive (with a Canon 6D). Obviously, it won't replace the 70-200 mm given its specs, but it is a useful backup lens in the field, and you can't beat the price. And it fits in Clik bag with the other two lenses (Canon 16-35 mm and Tamron 24-70 mm).

I got this lens for Christmas to mount to my T2i. This is my first telephoto lens. While it isn't bad for a start, once you get over the "WOW" of being able to zoom in on your subject this lens leaves a lot to be desired.

The main issue is it is SOFT, especially at 300mm. Compare this to a 50mm F1.8 stopped down to 2.5 or so and you'll see what I mean. A GOOD telephoto should be nearly as sharp. This lens doesn't even come close.

Combine this with the strong chromic aberration (purple hazing) with sharp highlights. While you can correct for some of it, don't expect to get great shots with strong direct lighting and/or highly reflective subjects.

All that being said you CAN get good shots out of this lens under the right conditions. With flat lighting the CA fails to rear it's ugly head, and with close subjects at 300mm, the bokeh quality is good. However, if the conditions aren't perfect you will end up with soft, purple-tinted photos.

For those with a less decerning eye this lens will do a decent job. But, if you are a bit picky with your photos, even if you're an amateur (like me) you'll probably want to pass on this one.

I've been able to grab some amazing photos with this. It is tack sharp when using a remote and tripod, but even hand held the AF will get you an excellent image.

No IS means a tripod is needed for optimal shots.

Personally I would not purchase this lens for what I use it for, but did not have much choice in the matter. It is ok for now until I can save up enough money for a Canon 100-400mm lens. Lens is ok for photos that don't need to be cropped.

This zoom came with my camera. Don't really use it for any style of shot (eg. landscape). Do most of my shooting by hand and that's not a good combination with this lens (no Image Stabilization)when you zoom out to 200-300. But you're gonna use a tripod, right? Other than the occasional blurry photo due to my shaky hands and incorrect settings, I can't really complain. However, I do plan to upgrade eventually.

Ideal lens to carry around as a second in the kit especially if the first lens is the kit stanard 18-55 item which has limited reach. Picture quality is good and you will get that distant shot. Ideal for taking the children out in the park, for vacation photos and any situation where a big zoom lens is needed but we do not want to spend big sums.

Comments about Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Lens:

This is not the greatest lens in the world. I find it's very soft at the 300mm lens length. It is slow, f4 is the fastest at 70mm and f5.6 at the full telephoto.

I tried it in various situations:

                  1. For nature photography, I was grabbing a shot of a rare bird while hiking. It was not a great photo. The softness was annoying, though I got an acceptable enough shot for identification. IS (Image Stabilization) would have helped in this application, but this lens doesn't have that added feature.

                  2. I put it on a very stable Basics 70-inch Adjustable Pistol Grip Head Tripod which is not a hiker's tripod but a very heavy, 10lb beast of a tripod that is going nowhere when you set it up. I photographed the moon at 300mm, using a remote shutter release. I didn't stop down the lens (perhaps that would have been better) but I was using a 1/10 second exposure and shakes happen even on tripods. The photo was sharp enough to see craters at the edge of sunlight on the surface, but they weren't razor sharp. The entire effect was soft (admittedly, we have pollution and it was a cloudy morning.)

You pretty much have to use a tripod with this lens unless it's brilliant sun outside and even then...

If you must have this length (and it is a handy one for sports and even candid portraits) then it's a budget choice. But compared to my 55-250mm, it's a lot softer and just not quite "the thing."

Comments about Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Lens:

I got this lens as part of a package deal. Autofocus is slow and loud compared to the kit 55mm STM that came with my SL1. I do like to have 300mm lens in my arsenal of two. I will use it for some still shots while I go hiking. For something like whale watching, I'm guessing I will have to prefocus before taking a shot which is okay since one isn't going to take truly amazing whale shots on a whale watching tour anyways.

Comments about Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Lens:

I bought this for my 10 year old son's camera. He has been showing some interest in photography. So I picked up an old Canon XS kit with a grip for him to use. The 18-55mm could only do so much, so I picked this lens up for him to add to his kit. He loves it. If he pursues photography, I will be upgrading his gear. Or maybe he'll get my 5D2, when the new 5D4 comes out, if I can talk the wife into it. Hehe.
