Questions? Ask our experts:

The EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Lens from Canon is a telephoto zoom lens ideal for day-to-day use because it is particularly light and compact, especially given its long focal reach. Able to magnify distant subjects, it also compresses the space between subjects within the frame and with a shallow depth of field at its longer lengths, it offers attractive out of focus bokeh. Its minimum focus distance is 4.9', even at the telephoto end of its zoom.

The USM model of this lens features an ultrasonic autofocus motor which provides fast, smooth and silent autofocus action. This is important for still photography but particularly useful when shooting video as it will not interfere with audio recording. In addition the zoom mechanism has been optimized for smoother zoom control.

Versatile telephoto focal range ideal for portraiture and magnifying distant subjects. When used on an APS-C format camera the equivalent focal length range is 120-480mm.
Lightweight and compact, weighs only 16.8 oz
Micro Ultrasonic Motor (USM) enables faster, smoother and quiet autofocus.
Enhanced zoom mechanism provides smoother zoom control.
4.9' minimum focus distance throughout the zoom range

See the photo I attached for a zoom comparison with the 18-55mm.

I've had this lens for about 2 years and I have a love/hate relationship with it. I love how affordable it is and it is relatively lightweight considering it's size. However, there are a few issues that have really stood out to me.

First, there is no stabilizer. For handheld shots at anything over 135mm you really need your shutter speed over 1/500. It also has quite bad chromatic aberration. (look it up if you don't know what this is) Even shooting at F/8, this lens has pretty severe color fringing at anything over 150mm or so. Luckily it is almost nonexistent at 75mm. Lastly, the lens extends during zooming. This lens goes from 5.5 inches to over 8 inches when zoomed in to 300mm. It may not sound like a lot, but it feels really bulky and hard to hold steady when zoomed in.

Do not be discouraged though! This is definitely a worthwhile investment. I'm still using it on my Rebel T1i and 7D two years later and you can really get some incredible shots with it. You do need to learn to work within it's limits though. It gives you insane zoom in a very affordable lens that is a ton of fun to shoot with.

This is a great lens for those starting out and needing a long range zoom. It is great for birding, etc as long as it is a sunny day. Overcast days will cause a challenge since the max aperture at 300mm is F6.3. You will probably need a Tri or Mono pod most of the time using this lens.If you can afford it get the IS version.

Comments about Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Lens:

Within 24 hours of using this lense has been the best thing ever! My backyard is filled with ton of birds including Orioles and it was difficult with my standard lense because they were so far away but now with the new lense I can get up close photos. Also during the first week of getting photos, my city also had the Blue Angels in town and that was amazing as well through the 75-300mm lense. Plus the fireworks photos turn out nicely as well.

I know I was procrasinating on buying this lense, but now that I have it. It's truly was an eye opener to greatest possibly capturing lots of great things for the future to come.

Yes sometimes I have to refocus on an object because I'm too close but I adjusted the zoom then zoom up as I track the object I'm taking photo of.

Comments about Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Lens:

I mostly use this product for aerial photography. Obviously, it's huge zoom capacity makes it great for getting shots of things on the ground, and/or far away while in the air. The only down side is that the lens physically telescopes a sizable distance. In other words, I sometimes have difficulty getting the shot I want, because the lens extends until I'm up against the plane's window.

Comments about Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Lens:

Autofocus stops working in digital zoom. Grrr. I would highly advise to use manual zoom with the video setting. It seems to me that you get a better distance footage that way. For anything within regular optical zoom... autofocus does the job.

I love taking pictures and would like to take it further however,I am unable to afford much in terms of lenses... This lens has been a great investment in having more opportunities with my camera to take good photos and I instantly saw the difference in the quality of lens. I recommend this lens highly if you are in the same boat as I am and would like to step up from the lens that came with my T3.
