The EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Lens from Canon is a telephoto zoom lens ideal for day-to-day use because it is particularly light and compact, especially given its long focal reach. Able to magnify distant subjects, it also compresses the space between subjects within the frame and with a shallow depth of field at its longer lengths, it offers attractive out of focus bokeh. Its minimum focus distance is 4.9', even at the telephoto end of its zoom.

The USM model of this lens features an ultrasonic autofocus motor which provides fast, smooth and silent autofocus action. This is important for still photography but particularly useful when shooting video as it will not interfere with audio recording. In addition the zoom mechanism has been optimized for smoother zoom control.

Versatile telephoto focal range ideal for portraiture and magnifying distant subjects. When used on an APS-C format camera the equivalent focal length range is 120-480mm.
Lightweight and compact, weighs only 16.8 oz
Micro Ultrasonic Motor (USM) enables faster, smoother and quiet autofocus.
Enhanced zoom mechanism provides smoother zoom control.

See the photo I attached for a zoom comparison with the 18-55mm.

I've had this lens for about 2 years and I have a love/hate relationship with it. I love how affordable it is and it is relatively lightweight considering it's size. However, there are a few issues that have really stood out to me.

First, there is no stabilizer. For handheld shots at anything over 135mm you really need your shutter speed over 1/500. It also has quite bad chromatic aberration. (look it up if you don't know what this is) Even shooting at F/8, this lens has pretty severe color fringing at anything over 150mm or so. Luckily it is almost nonexistent at 75mm. Lastly, the lens extends during zooming. This lens goes from 5.5 inches to over 8 inches when zoomed in to 300mm. It may not sound like a lot, but it feels really bulky and hard to hold steady when zoomed in.

Do not be discouraged though! This is definitely a worthwhile investment. I'm still using it on my Rebel T1i and 7D two years later and you can really get some incredible shots with it. You do need to learn to work within it's limits though. It gives you insane zoom in a very affordable lens that is a ton of fun to shoot with.

This is a great lens for those starting out and needing a long range zoom. It is great for birding, etc as long as it is a sunny day. Overcast days will cause a challenge since the max aperture at 300mm is F6.3. You will probably need a Tri or Mono pod most of the time using this lens.If you can afford it get the IS version.

Autofocus stops working in digital zoom. Grrr. I would highly advise to use manual zoom with the video setting. It seems to me that you get a better distance footage that way. For anything within regular optical zoom... autofocus does the job.

I love taking pictures and would like to take it further however,I am unable to afford much in terms of lenses... This lens has been a great investment in having more opportunities with my camera to take good photos and I instantly saw the difference in the quality of lens. I recommend this lens highly if you are in the same boat as I am and would like to step up from the lens that came with my T3.

I use this product for my nature shots. Prior to buying this lens, I would use my 30-75mm lens. However, I couldn't see very far with it. Therefore, I would try to get closer to the animal (be it a bird, deer, etc.) and scare it away. After buying this lens, I never have to worry about that again. It has great zoom and stabilization so none of the images come out blurry. It can be pretty heaby to carry around but he quality of the images and the zoom it offers are unbeatable, especially for the price. I'm a Canon girl. Anyone else who is pro-Canon, this lens is a must have, especially for beginners.

Used it on a recent trip and was able to capture pictures of my kids swim with dolphins from a distance, as the organizers would not allow me to go closer to take pictures. Was able to recover 50% of the cost of the lens as the professional photo graphers were charging around $ for picture packages. The Lens makes the camera heavy and I wish it would be a little lighter to carry. Worth every penny!

I have been very happy with this purchase. It is easy to swap this lens on my Canon camera and the auto-focus is almost instantaneous.

Bought for my wife for Christmas. She has a couple close up lenses. I don't know much about cameras but she loves shooting out doors with it. Very fast shipping. Very happy.

I am pleased with both the price and the photo wuality from this lens. I am an amatuer photographer, so it's important that what I buy is easy to use. As a side mote: I love B&H Photo Video -- website is easy to use and purchases come safely and on time!

Comments about Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Lens:

So far since purchasing this lens I have used it for portraits and nature shots, for which I was pleasantly surprised. It held up and took crisp photos, and even not so bad ones when I was riding in the car going 60 mph. Also not too much CA when mounted on my 6D, and during the day on the longer end, I was still able to increase my shutter speed without too much loss of light. I was not expecting an L lens, and therefore I was able to work happily with it. If you are a professional or amateur, you should have this lens at least as a back up. Just wish it had IS.
