The Tiffen 30mm UV Protector Filter is a general use, clear filter that helps to absorb ultraviolet light and reduce the bluish cast of daylight. This filter is especially useful when photographing at high altitudes or around bodies of water. No additional coloration or contrast is provided, allowing you to pair this filter with others.
The UV filter is also useful as a general protective filter to leave on lenses at all times. Filters help to reduce dust and moisture from reaching your lens element and provide additional protection in case of drops or situations where scratching could occur.
Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology; a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, then mounting to precision metal rings.

I was "talked into" buying the item when I first bought my video camera thinking, well, for five bucks why not - and low and behold, after a year or two I dropped my camera, cracked the lens protector and saved the lens. No one had to "talk me into" replacing it. Good, cheap and useful, amen.

Be VERY careful with this filter if you are recording video in wide angle.
I purchased a SONY HDR-CX580 camcorder and one of the accessories listed for it was the Tiffen 30mm UV Protector Filter. The problem with this filter is that it can be seen in the corners of the footage when recording in wide angle which will ruin your recording. Unless you don't mind fussy blue corners.

I've bought a Panasonic HDC-TM15K 16GB Full HD camcorder and the guy who processed my order convinced me to buy an useless filter. Because my camera has a 30.5mm lens. And the professional (I supposed he must be) gave me an 30 mm piece of glass. Or maybe it's supposed to be used as monocle?
