Retaining the excellent performance at maximum aperture of the much larger f/2.8L but in a much smaller and more travel-friendly size, the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens is a professional zoom telephoto suitable for a broad range of applications from sports to portraiture. It is fully compatible with the Extender EF 1.4x II and 2x II teleconverters (requires f/8 AF sensitivity with EF 2x II).
Like every autofocus Canon "L" lens, the EF 70-200mm f/4L delivers optical performance equal to similar fixed focal length lenses, with silent, high-speed focusing and full-time manual focus override capacity. Distortions and aberrations are remarkably small for a lens of such capability. This lens combines 1 artificial fluorite element with 2 UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) elements to help achieve images free of secondary spectrum aberrations, which are often the bane of consumer-grade telephoto zooms. It is light enough to not need a tripod collar (86% lighter than the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L), but for handling purposes there is an optional tripod collar.
The 70-200's minimum focusing distance is 3.9' (1.2m) throughout its entire range of focal lengths, and it accepts 67mm screw-in filters.
Note! This lens does not have seals for water and dust resistance.

I purchased this lens as a first step in upgrading all my glass to L series. It is undoubtedly amazing and now has me addicted. Is it as good in low light as the f4 IS or f2.8? No. But pair it with a body that handles high ISOs well and you're golden. You need to think hard about the benefits of the 70-200mm counterparts and whether or not the benefits match your needs and bank account. It is UNBELIEVABLY sharp throughtout the whole f stop range and zoom range. Solid build, amazing mechanics, quick-to-focus, the list is endless. I would wholly recommend this be a part of any Canon enthusiasts line-up, beginner to professional.

I use the 70-200 mainly for sports and wildlife photography. Its a great lens, very sharp, slim, and easy to use. But there are a few things that just arent ideal about this lens.
For instance, in some situations the focus will take a very long time. I've lost several shots because the focus motor just took to long. This has been rare though. Ive also experienced that it vignettes like CRAZY at F4. It clears up around F5.6 to F7.1. thats really what hurts my shots. the Vignetting.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens:
I am a photo enthusiast who takes quite a few trips throughout the year. I am heading to Alaska this summer and wanted a durable, quality lens for this once in a lifetime trip. I read articles covering numerous lenses and this one stood out amongst them all. Although the lens is not inexpensive, when it's compared to the other lenses in this L line, it is at least somewhat affordable. The quality of the pictures are stunning! The lens is not heavy at all and it focuses quickly. I highly recommend this lens. I will probably end up using this lens solely on my trip.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens:
I did a lot of research on several lenses before settling on this one. The price was a bit scary but, after using it, I am glad I splurged. This will be a lens in my pack for years to come. The crispness of the shots is amazing. It is light weight and with my tripod (which holds up o 15 lbs) I don't need the costly tripod collar. You will not regret purchasing this lens.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens:
At first, I really missed the image stabilization, but this option was out of my price range. I learned to compensate by using a tripod or by shooting at higher shutter speeds. I bought this lens to shoot outdoors, primarily sports and wildlife, so f4 works for me most of the time. I like the lighter weight of this lens--it's great for hiking. The build quality and optics are superior.

This lens is great for portraits! The lens is very sharp on my 60D and I have no regrets with my purchase. This a great price if you want the clarity and build of an L lens but working on a budget.

I am giving this lens 5/5 stars because it performs exactly like it is advertised to. With that said, it doesn't do anything extra.
This lense is sure to be a best seller because it enables photo enthusiast to own a professional quality zoom/telephoto lens for a less than professional price.
As I said previously, this lense will do exactly what it is advertised to do but will not do much more than that. This is the stripped down version Canon 70-200mm L lens. With no IS and only a F4 aperture, low light situations are difficult and will require a tripod. If most of your shooting that you plan to do with this lens is in bright daylight or is not moving then you need not worry about image quality and clarity. sharp and colorful is what you can expect from this lens. I love it.

It's a really great deal for the prize. This lens is super lightweight, small and inexpensive in comparison with 2.8L. It's the best lens in it's prize range.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens:
I bought the 70-200mm non-IS f4 instead of the 2.8 or the f4 IS for a couple reasons. First, I couldn't afford the 2.8 or the IS version. Second, I shoot a lot of outdoor sports, so mostly 1/1000 or faster shutter speeds eliminates the benefit of IS. What about overcast days? Bumping the ISO a bit to 800 or 1600 takes care of that, and the images srill look great. For indoors I have a 50mm f1.8 MKI and will probably get a 100mm f2 soon.
So far I am very happy with the results. Photos are sharp with nice color and contrast. Shooting fast moving action recently presented no problems for the USM focusing.
Do I want the 2.8? Yo bet. And I will get it out in the future. But until then, this lens will do just fine.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens:
I always wanted to purchase the 70-200 f2.8L but the price is an issue for me so I decided to try the f/4L and all I have to say is WOW. What a fantastic lens, the image quality and sharpness are just incredible. This is the best lens I have rigt now, even at 200mm f/4 you get razor sharp pictures that have a beatiful bokeh, fantastic color saturation and superb quality. It's really not the best lens for low light but with a flash or tripod works very well. For outdoor photography is unbeateable, it's light weight, fantastic L built quality and just beautiful to look at.
Trust me if you maintain a shutter speed faster that your focal lenght, you will not miss the IS, I know I don't.
If you are thinking about getting this lens, I do recommend it, the price is right and you will be getting a lens that should cost a lot more.

This is my first "L" lens purchase and though its not the "big boy" on the block I'm thoroughly surprised at how goo this lens is without IS. Images are sharp and bokeh is beautiful. I'm an amateur photographer but I can tell you that this lens is sharp, produces great color saturation and is worth every penny if not more. Very pleased with my purchase and I'm glad I jumped into the "L" lens series. Bravo Canon! Well done!

I absolutely LOVE this lens! It is very quick, and surprisingly lightweight. Such a pleasure for my wildlife shooting (mostly whales) to have a lens that has auto-telephoto inside. I added a UV filter for my ocean shots, which made this lens nearly perfect. Also the size of this lens is perfect for my camera backpack. Thank you!

This camera lens is well-suited for photography students. It is my first L Lens Series. I used this lens mainly for wedding, wildlife and sport shot. It is great lens, and easy to use. However, I am still disappointed at some points. The auto-focus take a long time to focus in few situations when I set F4. I lost some shots because of blurry and slow focus.

This lens is great. I shoot with a 5D mark ii and because of the light weight of this lens; this combination doesn't wear me out to carry around. Because of its lightweight the tripod collar isn't required, even though I put one on mine and I do prefer to shoot with it. It works very well in low light when on a tripod. Very nice Bokeh. The 2.8 version is awesome, but if budget is the deciding factor then this lens will not disappoint. I for one am very happy to own it.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens:
Listen folks, 5 stars because I am reviewing a lens without a 2.8 focal length and without image stabilization. What I can say about this particular lens is that it is lightweight (much much lighter than my old 28-300L). It has lighting quick and quiet focus. It has the standard L build quality which is top notch. It actually takes a very sharp picture and has a pleasant bokeh at f/4. I am more than pleased with this lens. The lens doesn't come with the focus ring like some of the other L series lenses because quite frankly, it doesn't really need it. The lens is incredibly lightweight. Fantastic lens.

This lens is fast and very versatile. Used it at the coast to get great brown pelican and shorebird photos. Easy to get subject in viewfinder, zoom and capture image. Although it is a f/4, in daylight it works flawlessly. Very lightweight and easy to carry. I see why the 70-200 series is so popular with action sports. Buy this lens with tripod ring adapter.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens:
Right now,I only own two lens, but this is by far my favorite walk-around and first "L" lens. The difference between this lens and my other 18-200mm "S" lens is like night and day. The 18-200mm lens came with my camera (Canon 60D) and may be 1 stop faster and wider capture, but I am ready to go for the Canon 24mm f1.4L anytime now. I truly love this lens and recommend it to anyone who wants a less expensive lens as opposed to Canons 70-200mm f2.8L IS 2 USM telephoto. I use this lens mainly for landscapes, and wildlife. I do use it often with low light on a tripod with excellent results.I ordered this from B&H Photo on Monday morning and it was receieved Tuesday afternoon the next day. Great service B&H.
