Retaining the excellent performance at maximum aperture of the much larger f/2.8L but in a smaller size, the EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens from Canon is a professional zoom telephoto suitable for a broad range of applications from sports to portraiture. It is fully compatible with the Extender EF 1.4x II and 2x II teleconverters (requires f/8 AF sensitivity with EF 2x II).

Like every autofocus Canon "L" lens, the EF 70-200mm f/4LUSM delivers optical performance equal to similar fixed focal length lenses, with silent, high-speed ultrasonic (USM) focusing and full-time manual focus override capacity. A focus range limiting option also enables faster autofocus rates.

Distortions and aberrations are remarkably small for a lens of such capability. This lens combines 1 artificial fluorite element with 2 UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) elements to help achieve images free of secondary spectrum aberrations, which are often the bane of consumer-grade telephoto zooms. It is light enough to not need a tripod collar (86% lighter than the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L), but for handling purposes there is an optional tripod collar.

The minimum focusing distance is 3.9' (1.2m) throughout its entire range of focal lengths, and it accepts 67mm screw-in filters.

Note! This lens does not have seals for water and dust resistance.

An autofocus telephoto zoom lens for both film and digital cameras with constant f/4 maximum aperture performance.
An ultrasonic autofocus motor provides fast, silent autofocus action.
Full-time manual focus override enables precise manual focus at all times, even in AF mode.
Two focus distance ranges enable you to adjust the autofocus to fit your needs and shorten AF speeds. The ranges are 3.9' to infinity for closer subjects and 9.8' to infinity.
Internal zooming and focusing means that the lens' front element does not rotate.
Uses 1 fluorite and 2 UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) elements to help control secondary spectrum aberrations
Uses 67mm filters and an optional tripod collar (A-IIW) is compatible as are the 1.4x II and 2.0x II extenders.

I purchased this lens as a first step in upgrading all my glass to L series. It is undoubtedly amazing and now has me addicted. Is it as good in low light as the f4 IS or f2.8? No. But pair it with a body that handles high ISOs well and you're golden. You need to think hard about the benefits of the 70-200mm counterparts and whether or not the benefits match your needs and bank account. It is UNBELIEVABLY sharp throughtout the whole f stop range and zoom range. Solid build, amazing mechanics, quick-to-focus, the list is endless. I would wholly recommend this be a part of any Canon enthusiasts line-up, beginner to professional.

I bought this lens to take photos of my son, who is 2 and a half playing soccer. So far I am extremely happy with the quality of the glass, the reach, and the images it produces. I have heard that this lens may not be the best for low light use, but I have no experience within it in that area yet, and that was expected.

This is an excellent lens. Although, the lens does not have IS, if you use a fast shutter speed the images are sharp and excellent. The AF is very fast and accurate. The lens is very well built and the price is fantastic. I am also very happy with the way B&H handled the sale. I expect to acquire other products from it,

Was looking for a fixed aperture lens of good quality, this is the lens! Light enough to take with you and sturdy enough to withstand rugged use. The f/4 is great for well lit areas, however if using indoors make sure it's well lit.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens:

This is a great lens, But before you buy it you should know just how you plan to use it remember this is an F4, not a fast lens, so it will be difficult to use in low light. If your shaky like me you may find yourself mounting it to a tripod most of the time. If you don't like shooting on a tripod you might consider faster F2.8 or the IS version. If you want quality photo's This lens is for you.

                Ready for the action

                By Toddkny

                from New York

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens:

After much consideration and speaking with the experts at B&H I made the correct choice. I shoot game footage for the Long Island Rough Riders Soccer team and missing the action isn't an option. This lens does the job and gives me the peace of mind needed to produce professional images. Fast and quiet best describe the performance of this lens. If you're worried about the lens not being an IS (image stabilization), don't. Is it the best lens for extreme low light, no. That being said for any outdoor or decently lit indoor sporting event all you need is a steady hand or a monopod. The images are crisp and warm. If you're looking for a great lens at an affordable price then please don't pass this up. I assure you the results speak for themselves.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens:

I bought this lens knowing that most often I would be using it in good light and on a tripod. This is where this lens excels. Also knowing that It would be difficult for me to hand hold even at moderate shutter speeds. Occasionally I do hand hold, in those instances I must raise ISO to get sharp pictures. Not the fault of the lens I am just shaky, If your as shaky as I am and don't want to be using a tripod get the faster lens or the IS model or both,

Just starting out with a nicer camera and wanted to try a better lens. I wish I had gone with the 2.8 instead of the 4 but cost was a driving factor for me. I think I will be happy with it - but not thrilled. It is light so that is nice - I may change my mind after playing with it more.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens:

If you don't need the 70-200 f/2.8 L II IS Lens' f/2.8 max aperture, the 70-200 f/4 L IS will give you everything else in a smaller, lighter and less expensive package. Without the f/2.8 aperture, you will need twice as much light to stop subject motion (at f/4) - and you will not be able to create a background as diffusely blurred. But, you also give up a substantial amount of size (still fixed), weight and cost. You give up very little in image quality or other pro-grade features including solid, weather-sealed build quality. This is a fantastic landscape and travel lens.

After reading many reviews on this lens and the 70-300 mm and talking to @ employees I chose to go with this one. I have used it once and am so far totally satisfied. The quality of the photos I have taken are very good. Even zoomed to 200mm. (The reviews on the 70-300mm talked about quality going down as zoomed)

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens:

This lens is a nice item to add to your bag if you becoming an intermediate photographer whether going professional or the avid hobbyist. The focusing motor is nice and quiet. I also bought a tripod ring for the lens as recommended as it is a someone what heavy lens. I would recommend this lens to anyone want to step up to the next level of photography

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens:

This lens is nothing short of amazing. I work for the college paper and we just received this item from BH the other day. I've used this lens on a 7D and a T2i and it functions perfectly. This would have actually made me consider switching from Nikon if I hadn't already bought a 70-200VR1.
                  It is amazingly sharp
                  light and tough
                  Fast autofocus.
f/4 Doesn't sound good for bokeh, but it is quite amazing

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens:

Going from Canon's kit 18-200 to this, it was a great surprise to see how sharp the images turn out. Much less distortion, vignetting, much faster focus - it's vastly superior in all aspects except for focal range.
AFMA seems to be spot on.
The lens is light, easily maneuverable and it's only missing a center-pinch cap and a ring to be perfect. Both extras are cheap fixes though.
