This macro lens is made specifically for extreme close-in macros, and it does that job very well. Its dedicated focal range is only 1.6" to 4", depending on the magnification used, and it requires manual focus. The retracted size is very compact, and the support collar/bracket provide well-balanced support. Plenty of working light is necessary for accurate focusing.

The high magnifications require solid support for both the subject and the camera/lens. The camera should be on a solid, smooth-operating focusing rail. I'm currently using RRS macro rails, but they really have too much play for this exacting work. The small distance from the back of the support collar to the camera may cause pro body cameras to impinge on the support foot when rotating the camera orientation, requiring removal and replacement of the lens during rotation.

Use: Once you set the desired magnification, focus is achieved by varying the distance to the subject with the focusing rail. DOF is extremely thin at these magnifications, but astounding, fully-focused macro images can be created by shooting a progression of frames while changing focus in small increments to cover the full depth of the subject. An image-stacking program can then be used to composite those frames into a single image. This process requires meticulous work, rock-solid supports, a lot of patience and considerable processing time for the image stacking program to run. The output image may require some retouching to eliminate some stacking artifacts. The results can be amazing.

On one hand, the finest Macro I have used. On the other, the most prone to dust intrusion (of any lens) I have ever owned. After two uses, in studio and with great care, the lens ended up with internal dust. If not for dust, I would have happily given this lens 5 stars, but in many ways the dust issue is just too much of a problem for me and I am selling the lens (with full disclosure). I made my buying discussion, in large part, from B&H Review pages, but after experiencing the dust problems, I found countless examples online.

Comments about Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro Photo Lens:

I've been using this lens since 2004. It was the reason I went with Canon rather than Nikon. I wanted a dissecting microscope mounted on my camera---and I got it. Pair it with a 24EX twinlight, a focusing rail, and focus stacking software and you will will go where no photographer has gone before. Respect DOF and lighting and it will make every photo you take out-of-the-ordinary. You will have a tendency to want to hunt extensively for your subject (even though it is 2 inches in front of the lens) and you have the unusual problem of subjects occasionally jumping on your lens (e.g. jumping spiders) or grinding it into the dirt (e.g. photographing ant foraging behavior). You can easily photograph at 1X with a slight rocking motion to focus, but 3X or more requires a stable base. At 5X the viewfinder grows dark. In other words, it is a challenging lens but not impossible. This was literally the first camera lens I bought and the lens that I learned on. It remains my favorite lens (and I have the 2.8 70-200mm L, 24-70mm L, 180mm L macro and other great lenses.

Comments about Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro Photo Lens:

This lens is in a class all by itself. With up to 5x magnification you can take portraits of a fly. It does have a learning curve as there is no autofocus and when you get up to 5x the depth of field is so shallow you can throw off the focus just by pressing the shutter release. Hand holding it takes some getting used to and a ring flash is a must. I would recommend trying it before you buy it.

This is probably the best "specialized macro" on the market as long as you understand DOF, diffraction and that it can only be used for Macro work....Will not focus on objects further than 4 inches away. You will also need to know stacking images if you need more than a few mm. of DOF.

Don't be fooled by my review headline. I love this lens, but I need to learn more about photography in order to take advantage of it's capabilities! I would suggest a macro adjustment plate, a tripod, and a LOT of light. Just the nature of shooting in super macro. Great build quality and clarity.

A very sensitive lens not intended for beginners. But this lens can do some amazing things if you have the patience to master it. Will require some additional gear like tripod rail and macro ring light.

          Best Pro: Ultra close-up capabilities
Worst Con: Ultra sensitive, ultra shallow depth of field

This lens is great! I use the MT-24ex to light my subjects. The only thing that's tricky to get used to is what the maximum aperture you can use without getting diffraction softening. For example, at 5x, f5.6 is the smallest I'll shoot at so that my images are very sharp. If I go smaller, of course more will be in focus, but there will gradually be no tack sharp area of focus. Though at 1x I'll shoot at f11, so if varies throughout the magnifications.

Comments about Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro Photo Lens:

I have been a amateur photographer for 40 years, starting out with film and making the transition to digital...My film macro combo was a Nikon F1 with a reversed 100mm which i used with a portable flash. The average "keeper" was about 1 in 10 shots, since you couldn't see the results until after processing your roll. I have always enjoyed the hidden world that a macro lens exposed.....I read all the reviews about this lens and they almost scared me off.......Don't let it scare you. If you have any experience with macro this lens is no problem. You can bug hunt without a tripod at 1x and proper flash setup but must use a tripod focus rail setup remote cable for anything above 2x for any chance of success....Don't get me wrong it's not a novice lens but if you have done macro and want the best lens for real macro photography....this is your lens...Remember you cannot use this lens for anything but macro because it is a specialized lens....The included yoke is really great for balancing your setup on a tripod....I use it with a 7D with live view which really makes it a lot easier to use this lens......I would also invest in a small led light source to aid in focusing at high magnification.....Besides a flash a good solid tripod, remote cable and focus rail ( my own experience is the gear driven focus rails are ok but if you put your camera vertical get a screw drive like the Manfrotto to get the mechanical advantage and smooth movement). Also some sort of articulated cable clamp accessory is handy for outside shooting to hold your plant or twig etc. steady because even the slightest breeze will cause you focusing problem....If you love macro photography this is the lens for you.

It will let your creativity blossom. I would buy it again in a heartbeat!

This is simply a must-have lens for those who enjoy macro photography. I've never had so much fun taking pictures in my life. This lens offers the user the "thrill of the hunt" looking for smaller & smaller things to photograph: a fruit fly tongue, or structures deep inside a flower invisible to the naked eye. This lens will keep you entertained for hours - guaranteed. You just can't get any better macro lens than this one. While you could use this lens hand-held, a very steady hand is required because it magnifies your hand movement as well as your subject. A good tripod and macro focus rail would be very helpful especially when you get up to 5 times lifesize. Also a good light is helpful because the lens is so close to the subject at higher magnification. I just use a small worklight or flashlight, but for professional photos, a better lighting system would be good. If you want to bring back the fun of photography this is the lens for you.

Extreme macro! If you like taking photos at 5x 1:1 magnification with tack sharp quality... buy this lens, buy it right now! Why take photos of insects when you can take photos of insects eyes?!

Comments about Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro Photo Lens:

This is a lens that any Canon fan would eventually buy, because of its uniqueness. It basically allows you to take a microscope with you. However, for it to really shine, I still need to get a sturdy tripod (Gitzo Systematic), a stable ball head (Arca-Swiss d4), macro rails, and macro flash brackets. Therefore, the complete package might be much more expensive than the lens itself. It's not as sharp as any other lenses I used at maximum magnification. It extends a lot at maximum magnification. Wobbling is not an issue thanks to its all-metal, high-quality build. For biologists, the 5x magnification is insignificant. Nevertheless, it's easy and fun to use in the field.

Comments about Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro Photo Lens:

I'm amateur, just learning photography and I have been trying my hand at insect macro, I also own the Canon Macro 100mm 2.8L IS USM, however I wanted more magnification as that lens only gives up to 1:1. I thought about getting extension tubes and the Raynox DCR 250, but after reading several blogs and forum comments, I noticed that mostly everybody drools about the MP-E 65 and many of the best macro pictures are taken with it. I had some spare money and I indulged. I've had it only for two weeks and it is quite difficult to use, as there is no focusing, you have to focus by moving the camera, also the amount of light that goes through the viewfinder makes it extremely difficult to focus at 4x or 5x. So many photos are taken and only a few are in focus, but the ones that are shot right are amazing. It requires plenty of patience, a good light properly diffused and close to the subject and lots of practice.... but I've already taken a few shots that I'm very proud of.
