The Tamron SP AF Pro teleconverter features improved optical construction, and is designed to be used with lenses that are f/2.8 and of focal lengths of 90mm or greater.
The 1.4x teleconverter (also known as a tele-extender) will multiply the focal length of the existing lens by 1.4x, and will cut back the amount of light by one f/stop. For example, using a 1.4x teleconverter with a 300mm lens will effectively increase the focal length to 420mm. A lens set to f/2.8 will now be f/4.
This teleconverter is not recommended for lenses wider than 90mm, e.g. 50mm, 28-105mm, etc. However, full AF operation is still only possible with lenses with open aperture of f/2.8 or brighter. Please be aware that AF will work properly only if there is enough light and contrast on the subject to activate the camera's AF sensors. Manual focusing is recommended when using lenses with smaller open f-stop value than those given above.
Note! When used with lenses with smaller maximum apertures (f/4 and f/5.6, for example) there will be little difference in image quality as compared with the standard Tamron teleconverters. When used with lenses wider than 90mm the SP teleconverters can actually compromise image quality.

I purchased this teleconverter to use with the Canon 100-400 lens on a 1D Mk II for stationary subjects in good light at a distance. It is an excellent little tool. I was a little skeptical about getting the Tamron at first over the Canon, but the $$ difference was significant, and I thought I'd give it a try. The image quality is very good. I was shocked to find that the autofocusing speed with this teleconverter and the 100-400 in good light on the 1D Mk II was actually fairly good. I was able to capture birds in flight with the teleconverter on at full zoom! On the 70-200mm f/4 IS, this teleconverter shows nearly no loss of image quality over the lens bare. I use this attached to the 70-200mm f/4 IS and extension tubes for macro work, and the combination performs very well.
The caps that come with this teleconverter are cheap and seem like they might crack at any time. You should pick up a set of canon caps instead for this, and you'll be set to go! It will save you money and works very very well with minimal loss of image quality!

You give up a bit of light (compensate with ISO) and a bit of contrast (correct with software) but it does provide further reach, as intended. The price is right. I would not buy a longer lens for a once-in-a-while use, so this is a nice solution.
The quality, as I have observed, is fine. Wolud I recommend it? Yes, with qualifications on personal preferences.

Comments about Tamron 1.4x SP Pro Teleconverter for Canon AF:
I bought this for use with my Underwater camera system. I will be using it with the Canon 100mm f2.8L and the Canon 8-15mm lenses. This teleconverter doesn't have the rubber rings (which make them incompatible with many lenses) that the Canon TC has. All of the auto focusing functions seem to work properly. Keep in mind that you will have to add extension rings to your ports when using teleconverters. Also your focus & zoom rings will need to be changed. I found that the focus ring for the 60mm Canon macro lens works great with the 8-15mm/1.4 TC combination in my Sea & Sea housing.

Okay, I bought the converter for my wife but it ends up in my bag as often as hers. We both enjoy the lens, works great and is very clear, even for evening shots. Yes I, oops, we would definitely recommend it to our friends and have!

I use this teleconverter when shooting macro shots with my 100mm f2.8L canon macro lens. I love the magnification and the quality of photos. The light and the colors of my photos subjects are very close to the live originals. I am planning on using it with my new telephone zoom lens as well.

I used with a Canon XS and Tamron 18-270 lense. The autofocus does not work well in low light conditions. But in brighter light can hire contrast works better. On this lense it gives me 378 range and 1F stop is lost.

Very easy to install:
1. add the 1.4X converter to the lens
2. Attach to the camera as usual
It is light and small, and hardly noticeable
you lose 1 stop ( your F4 lens is now F5.6 )

I bought this to go with my Tamron 70-200 mm F/2.8 lens to get a little closer to the action. Great quality photos for a fraction of the price of others. Auto focus works well with it also.

I have a Canon 7D and a 18-270 Tamron lens, I wanted more focal distance and this gives me a 378 zoom with very little additional weight.
Autofocuses beautifully with my lens with no noticable distortion at its full extension

Comments about Tamron 1.4x SP Pro Teleconverter for Canon AF:
I use this teleconverter with a Sigma 150mm f2.8 1:1 macro lens. I am very happy with the results. The image quality is still outstanding with this TC/lens combo and the autofocus will work in most situations. On occasion I have to manually focus close to the subject to get the autofocus to engage but I have not found that to be a problem overall. I primarily use this combo for small insect and wildflower shots.
I would not recommend this TC to be used with the Tamron 200-500mm lens. I have tried this combo and find the results to be simply fuzzy. I think cropping with the original lens only will give better results than with this TC. And keep in mind this TC is not designed for the Tamron 200-500 f5-6.3 anyway.
Bottom line I can recommend it but only for lenses that it is designed for.

I had some reserve on purchasing this Tamron 1.4. Soon after shooting my kids soccer for U10...those reserves went away. I lost no quality in my images and found focusing to be equally impressive. I have a lot more "keeper" pics now since they are closer. I am glad I invested in the Tamron 1.4 and save money over the Canon. It also reports to my exif that a 1.4 was used. Nice peice that blends well with my 70-200 F4 L.

I use this TC on a Canon 100-400 IS L on a XT body. With pins taped and plenty of light, this combo works perfectly and allows to take great shots. Be careful of the light loss. It is sometimes necessary to manually focus to be more accurate.
Build is good, very similar to the Kenko TC (same factory?)
Knowing the limitations beforehand, I find it a great product that really meets my expectation.
