The Tamron SP AF Pro teleconverter features improved optical construction, and is designed to be used with lenses that are f/2.8 and of focal lengths of 90mm or greater.
The 1.4x teleconverter (also known as a tele-extender) will multiply the focal length of the existing lens by 1.4x, and will cut back the amount of light by one f/stop. For example, using a 1.4x teleconverter with a 300mm lens will effectively increase the focal length to 420mm. A lens set to f/2.8 will now be f/4.
This teleconverter is not recommended for lenses wider than 90mm, e.g. 50mm, 28-105mm, etc. However, full AF operation is still only possible with lenses with open aperture of f/2.8 or brighter. Please be aware that AF will work properly only if there is enough light and contrast on the subject to activate the camera's AF sensors. Manual focusing is recommended when using lenses with smaller open f-stop value than those given above.
Note! When used with lenses with smaller maximum apertures (f/4 and f/5.6, for example) there will be little difference in image quality as compared with the standard Tamron teleconverters. When used with lenses wider than 90mm the SP teleconverters can actually compromise image quality.

Comments about Tamron 1.4x SP Pro Teleconverter for Nikon AF:
I have used my newly acquired T.C. on about 10 outings in the first 3 weeks with varied conditions & subjects.
So far I've only used the TC with my D300s and 300mm f/4... LOVE IT.
Even handholding, I don't see unacceptable softness. Actually, it's sharper than I anticipated ( at least with this lens ).
When I finally do try it on a tripod I expect even better results.
I mostly shoot wildlife and generally have had no significant slow-down in autofocus.. only occasionally when doing birds i/f esp. if I'm trying to refocus quickly from bright sky to the darker marsh/swamps.
Otherwise it's been good from beaches/lagoon with shorebirds to 'gators in the marsh to tiny treefrogs in the swamp to little Downy Woodpeckers in the shade of trees plus a host of BIF (birds in flight).
Focal length shows correctly: 420mm on the 300mm.
I initially gave it 4 stars (because nothing is perfect) but changed to 5 stars because it does what it's supposed to do & does it well, IMHO.
No negative issues for me ... no disappointments.

Comments about Tamron 1.4x SP Pro Teleconverter for Nikon AF:
Used the teleconverter for a wildlife shoot in variety of lighting conditions with my Nikon D-5000. Quality was not great. There are many factors that played into reduced quality: slow lens, low light, fast moving subjects. I plan to try again with landscape photography and better lighting.

Comments about Tamron 1.4x SP Pro Teleconverter for Nikon AF:
I use the 1.4x teleconverter on my f/2.8 70-200 Tamron zoom when birding or for discreet candid photography.
The IQ loss is minimal and in spite of the f/stop penalty when using the 1.4 I have successfully taken great captures in low light.
For those with the Nikkor 105MM f2.8 Micro lens, the Tamron 1.4 not only fits but lets you produce wonderful captures at f/4. I would definitely purchase it again.

Comments about Tamron 1.4x SP Pro Teleconverter for Nikon AF:
I use this in sports photography usually that means low light photography and I have not found this useful for that situation. I use this with my 70-200mm F2.8 lens. Using the converter the autofocus slows significantly and the image quality decreases noticeably. I find that using my D300 I get better images from just cropping more instead of using the converter.

Comments about Tamron 1.4x SP Pro Teleconverter for Nikon AF:
I use this lens with my Nikon D300 and have used it with the following Nikon lenses with exceptional results, even wide open: 24/3.5 shift (provided lens is centered), 50/1.4 AF, 60/2.8 micro AF, 18-200/3.5-5.6 VR(at the longer focal lengths, naturally), 85/1.8AF, 105/2.8 VR micro, 80-400/4.5-5.6. Even better results with lenses stopped down slightly (1/2-1 stop). Full transfer of functions - AF,VR, etc., even with lenses having max. aperture of 5.6 (f8 with converter) - at least with the D300; does not however transfer corrected f. stop or focal length (e.g., with 80-400 at 400mm. and f5.6 will still transfer data as 400/5.6 rather than 560/8) - metering however still accurate. Cannot reccomend highly enough.

Comments about Tamron 1.4x SP Pro Teleconverter for Nikon AF:
Frankly speaking I was in dilema to purchase a third-party teleconverter. But it's results delighted me. I used it extensively with my Nikon 300/4 AF on my D80, D200 and D300 and have taken no less than 300 photographs, although the manufacturer claimes the teleconverter is not designed for DSLRs. Results were generally very good to superb, particularly with the lens stopped down to 1 or 2 stops. It also works nicely with my Nikon 70-200 VR. I would be happy if the actual f number was displayed in the viewfinder or in EXIF data. In my opinion it has been the only Pro-standard teleconverter for Nikon AFD and can well be pitted against Nikons.
