We are wedding photographers and wanted a fast and easy light source for bridal portraits and for adding light when needed for winter weddings when the sun is down at 5pm. I'm also a fan of the soft old-Hollywood look you can achieve with this kind of lighting. We tested the light out at our last wedding and were pleased with the quick set up and portability of the Lowel. This video light tends to be the choice of photographers because it allows you to adjust the intensity of the light and accepts modifiers. We used the diffusion glass and the barndoors (purchased separately) and were happy with both. The light can be mounted to a tripod, monopod, or a handle-type accessory. I suggest attaching it to something, because it will get hot and a handle/monopod allows for easier handling. While I suppose you could use this light with a tripod, it's really best handheld by an assistant who can move it. Battery life is limited, so this isn't ideal for long shoots, but for quick portrait sessions where you just need some extra light to add drama. This light isn't bright enough to let you shoot at 100 ISO in a dark room, but it will make the difference between a noisy, underexposed photo and a properly exposed one at an acceptable ISO. We typically shoot at ISO 640-800 with this light, for example. If you are new to off camera lighting, you may find this to be an accessible, and less intimidating way to get started, instead of more complicated alternatives like off-camera flashes or monolights. The continuous light source basically means what you see is what you get, so you can experiment and make changes on the fly, and you can meter off the light, rather than tinkering with manual flash exposures. There is obviously no need for complications like wireless triggers, etc., which again makes it a good alternative to someone new to lighting. Just find someone willing to help hold the light and get creative!

The Id-light really does work great, but is really built poorly - especially since just after a few times using it, certain screws loosen up for whatever reason. Also, it's very awkward to hold (especially without a handle). Overall, it's an inexpensive alternative to the more expensive lights out there.

Comments about Lowel ID-Light 100W Focus Flood Light, 4-Pin XLR (12-30VDC):

I am actually using this light for photography, but I love it... I was a little nervous not quite sure if I would get good use of it to justify how much I was spending on this extra "specialty" lighting, but now that I have used it I know I will use this A LOT, it's easy to use and adjust, and very portable. As I go into this year's wedding season, I am excited to incorporate this light to our work.

We ordered a second set of ID-Light 100W Focus Flood Light, 4-Pin XLR (12-30VDC). This light helps to work with video and a photo. Power control and the width of the light flux can operate in small spaces and open space.

We are professional wedding photographers and we've been toying with the idea of using video lights in conjunction with strobes for a while now. We got this light because of it's dimming abilities and it's fantastic. The right time of evening it puts out a beautiful glow that we've only just begun to explore. A must have. The battery says it only lasts an hour at 100 watts but the way we use it, it's no big deal.

Comments about Lowel ID-Light 100W Focus Flood Light, 4-Pin XLR (12-30VDC):

Great ! Looks and feels well built ! Great to be able to go from flood to spot! And the dimmer is great! Great light! I have a frezzi mini fill and it also has a 55 watt bulb in it. The frezzi is smaller and lighter but no flood and spot control.

The idlight is also too big to mount on a dlsr rig. I use a light stand to key light. Get the barn doors for more control! Just great!

The light is of nice quality. It is a little larger than expected but not of any concern. I used for videography for an outdoor wedding reception (some existing light) and it was decent, but would have been better served with the 100w light vs the 50w. I would purchase again.

Product is used for portrait photography when a warm light source is needed. The adjustable strength and focus/width of the beam is great though the focus is slightly finnicky (i.e. goes from wide to narrow to slightly wider when it should be getting narrower). Definitely recommended esp with the lighter battery pack for mobility and versatility. I had a fault with the charger, which B&H immediately sent out a replacement for!
