This AF-S Zoom-NIKKOR 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED Lens from Nikon is an ultra-wide-angle rectilinear zoom lens with a range of professional-level features that yield overall superior performance. In addition to providing close-focus distance of 10.8" throughout the entire zoom range, the lens also features a fast constant maximum aperture of f/2.8. It is an effective lens for architecture photography, photojournalism, documentary and general photographic applications.

A fast internal focus system does not extend the lens while focusing and the Silent Wave autofocus motor provides smooth and near silent autofocus which is especially important when shooting video. Manual focus override allows for precise control of focus even in AF mode. Two Extra-low Dispersion glass elements reduce chromatic aberrations for ideal colors and high contrast and three aspherical lens elements minimize spherical aberrations. Super Integrated Lens Coating improves light transmission through the lens, reducing ghosting and flare.

This lens' autofocus function is compatible with Nikon DSLRs featuring a built-in autofocus motor. It will not support auto focusing when used with certain DSLRs that do not have an integrated focus motor, such as the D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D3200, D3300, D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300, D5500.

Ultra-wide angle zoom lens with 62°-104° angle of view when used on FX format DSLRs. On DX format DSLRs the range is 44° to 79° which is equivalent to a 25.5-52.5mm lens in the 35mm format.
An internal focus system and the Silent Wave Motor enable fast, precise and near-silent autofocus while manual focus override is supported even in AF mode.
Two Extra-low dispersion glass elements and three aspherical elements minimize aberrations and Super Integrated Lens Coating reduces ghosting and flare.
Minimum focus distance of 10.8" allows you to get close to your subject and maintain focus and a 9-blade circular diaphragm creates natural looking out-of-focus highlights.

Nikon's Most Usable Wide Angle Lens

For those of you researching which wide angle lens to buy before plunking down your hard earned cash, please allow me to point out a few things learned by experience. I shoot primarily landscape images, so wide angle lenses are constantly in my bag. I shoot quite a few moving water shots, where I use a polarizer and variable neutral density filter to get the longer exposures to obtain the effect I am looking for. Having multiple lenses is great, if you don't mind lugging them around and can afford them. But if you only wish to buy one wide angle zoom lens, read on - this may help you make a decision.

After trading in some old primes and a 28-85mm zoom, I purchased the 14-24mm f2.8. It is an excellent lens - even the Canon users buy it, as Canon has nothing that can touch it. Clarity, bokeh are outstanding. I love this lens. For an ultra-wide, in my opinion, there is no equal. That said, it does have limitations. The front element is large and convex, and there is no front element protection if you aren't careful. You cannot attach filters (the screw-in type) to the front of this lens. As of this writing, you can purchase an adapter from Lee for a substantial amount of money - if they are available. Then there is buying filters to use in that adapter. More money. There is also the issue of light reflecting off the rear of the filters in front of the lens element. Annoying to say the least. If you use filters in the field as I do (saves time in post capture) this is really a strong point to consider.

I also have the excellent 24-70mm f2.8. Another exceptional lens, and this one is on my camera most of the time, if I'm only going to carry one lens. I'm very happy with it. I won't review this lens in it's entirety here, you can read the reviews under its column. This lens has the ability to attach filters to the front of the lens, but I have vignetting issues when using a couple of my filters - even with the thin rings. The vignetting seems to disappear around 28 mm, but when using this lens wide and for multiple image panoramas, the vignetting does cause extra work, post capture, especially when stitching those images together. Something to be aware of. I found that photographing in some tight creekside areas, I just couldn't get wide enough and needed the extra few millimeters on the wide-side that the 24-70mm or my 24mm prime didn't have. The 14-24mm would work, but I could not use any filters to extend the exposure time. Enter the 17-35mm.

I had strongly considered the 17-35mm when I purchased the 14-24mm. Through use, I have experienced that the 14-24mm is more of a specialty lens, which is great - but it does have its limits. Needing to fill the void of not being able to use filters on the 14-24mm but needing wider view than that of the 24-70mm, I bought the 17-35mm. After using this lens now for 6 months, I have found that the majority of my recent wide angle shots have been taken with this lens. Build quality is excellent. It feels solid, focuses well on auto (although I use mostly manual - old habits are hard to kick) and is very sharp. There is a little distortion at 17mm, but if it bothers you, that can be corrected easily in Photoshop. With filters installed ( SinghRay Vari-ND and polarizer ) there is only very slight vignetting at 17mm, and completely gone by 19mm. If you using only one filter, there is none, even at 17mm.

Nikon also has the 16-35mm f4, and it has VR (vibration reduction), which to me is not a big deal. It's a little longer, a little lighter and about $500 less than the 17-35mm. It gets good reviews, and although I have not used one, I do subscribe to the "You get what you pay for" mantra. The 17-35mm is one of Nikon's pro-lenses, the 16-35 is not. Nikon Pro Glass is top quality - 'nuff said. Nice to have the f2.8 as well for those smooth blurry backgrounds or less light when needed.

Now that all that has been said, the 17-35mm would have been a better choice for an ultra-wide, and should have been my first choice. Don't get me wrong, I love my 14-24mm too - I just don't use it as much. It's a lot of coin to have sitting in your camera bag, yet unbeatable on those rare occasions when conditions are right and you really need it. However, you will have to decide what your primary use for a wide angle lens will be, what if any accessories (filters, hoods) you will be using, and what your budget will allow. Personally, I think the 17-35mm is a much more versatile and usable lens.

Bottom line - If you only can afford one wide angle zoom lens, in my humble opinion, the 17-35mm f2.8 is the ticket.

Would I recommend it to a friend? I think I just did.

This is the second sample I've been sent, and both samples were noticably less-sharp than my cheap DX lens. Some people have said this lens is better after recalibration by Nikon, so I may resort to that. So beware, Nikon's QA on this product appears to be less than desirable!

I was able to find this lens used at a substantial discount. However, it was in excellent shape. This lens is on my camera 50% of the time and my 70-200 VRII the other 50%. You will not be disappointed.

          Comments about Nikon AF-S Zoom-NIKKOR 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED Lens:

This is one of the best wide angle you can get. The reason I settled for this over 14-24 was to ensure all my filters (4x6 & 77mm) to work. When compared to the color and contrast that you can get with 14-24, this one is not as good. But with a little PP you can get it similar results eventually. One limitation is if you are positioning people in the foreground with wider angle (like less than 24 mm), you find significant distortion of the subject (barrel). That is a bit hard to fix. But I am happy to use this for pure landscape and this produces very sharp picture. Recently got a 24 f1.4 that I use more often these days as I realized super wide landscapes are not always too interesting. My intention is to get Zeiss 15mm some day so I can still use all my 4x6 Lee filters hand held. I will most likely sell this lens at that time. I like the output of Zeiss 15 over 14-24, both of which I have rented and used. My advise is choose your wide angle lens carefully based on what your purpose is. I would not recommend this for portraits/marriages etc.

Absolute work of art. A must have for photography professionals. I didn't know what I was missing from my subjects, till I got this lenses. Build quality and picture quality make this unit, worth it. Please note, I got the USA version, and not the cheaper 'gray' version, which is also available for about $ less. The only difference is the warranty.

I bought this lens to replace my 20-35mm super lens from the 90s. It is sharper by a touch, and way wider, with that nice ultra-wide distortion that I like. I can get really really close with this. I didn't measure, but its virtually on top of the subject. And its fast, too. Taking it to Alaska. Bokeh wonderful. I know that's not very helpful. How about--a lovely milky blur?

              Comments about Nikon AF-S Zoom-NIKKOR 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED Lens:

I saved for this lens for years. It replaces the 24mm 2.8 and the 50mm 1.8 for my everyday use. I used both of these lenses nearly every day on three different bodies (starting with film F100) over the course of the past 12 years. They're the cheapest and greatest lenses.
For only three times as much money as those two lenses cost you can have the unparalleled 17-35mm.
The 17-35mm is simply everything is promises to be: sturdy build, sharp images, fast/quiet autofocus.
It does well in low light, but it isn't flawless.
Shooting at 17mm is so wide that it really helps keep everything sharp. Even shooting at 17mm on a 1.5x digital body is wide enough to take great overall shots in tight spaces.
This lens is best for when you really wants your viewers to feel like they are in the middle of what's happening.
If you are a bold photographer that is willing and comfortable to shoot very close to your subjects I would suggest this lens. In any other case I would buy the 24mm and a great 50mm.

              Comments about Nikon AF-S Zoom-NIKKOR 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED Lens:

I bought this because i was in need of lenses for the fx format after purchasing my Nikon D610. This great camera requires great lenses. I was using my 32 yr old AIs 28 mm and 35-105mm and my newer70-200 f 2.8 VR1 with greatsuccess, but realy wanted wide angle and AF. This lens seemed the way to go. I tried buying it off of [@]like 3 times used with bad experiences. I only wanted a Nikon USA, lens with the "SWM" and "aspherical" enscription, since that indicates the later production on these lenses. I ended up speaking to "Phil" (pretty sure that was his name), and asked him to physically look at his in-stock lenses and make sure of my criteria. He did. He then mailed me a primo condition lens and the results are visible in the attached photos. This is a killer lens. The words "photojournalism lens" are sometimes used and I see why. You can use available light and get fabulous effects. See for yourself. The ezpected distortion from wide angles is easily corrected in Lightroom. The sharpness is outstanding. I wish I could show 5 more pictures.

Oldie but goodie. Nikon 17-35mm is an awesome wide angle for FX cameras. It built like a tank, something that most of the new zooms lack. Optically, this one is better than newer Nikon 16-35 f/4 but still lags behind famous Nikon 14-24 f/2.8. Contrast and color rendering is absolutely great and this thing is sharp even at f/2.8.

i bought this lens due to its tough build, image quality and ability to mount filters. the newer lenses are no match to this classic in terms of build quality. so far i am loving it!

                    Comments about Nikon AF-S Zoom-NIKKOR 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED Lens:

If you are a pro looking for technical jargon, you might want to skip this review as I'm a hobbyist and not versed on technical stuff past f-stops, shutter speeds, ISOs and darkroom stuff.

I don't have a big budget so I use a long-discontinued dslr and I MacGyver whenever possible- styrofoam boards, aluminum foil, mirrors, twine, cardboard, etc.

There is no substitute, however, for quality glass.

I borrowed this lens from a pro photographer friend (on my d50 and on my friend's d300), then rented it again when on vacation shooting landscapes and knew I just had to save up and get this lens, even if it was only to be used for landscapes.

Turns out I've been pleased with the results not just for the landscapes but for being able to get close up and still capture lots of detailed information, which is great for portraits in intimate settings, shooting artwork, etc.

I recommend renting it and trying it on different bodies as I have to best see the results.

Very nice lens. pictures are sharp. But it is heavy (all good lenses are heavy). somehow I can still see a little bit bulk distortion for the building pictures. I need to try more.

                          Comments about Nikon AF-S Zoom-NIKKOR 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED Lens:

This is a great lens, versitile and top of the line, overall very sharp, fairly well controlled distortion for the wide angles and with the 77mm filter size and zoom range is a great travel photography lense. However, if you are setting up to take the shapest possible at the wider focal lengths (<24mm) you might want to think seriously about the Nikon 14-24/f2.8 if you can live without filters or have the time when in shooting mode to set up the adapters available. The 17-35/f2.8 is best above 24mm for sharpness accross the frame, light fall off and CA control... in my experience. Of course most of this is correctable and not relavent for most uses... so an excellent lens to have on your camera for long periods of time. Again, especially for traveling as it weight is reasonable for the trade off of not having to switch out primes.

Well built lens with good features. However, the right and left edges really suffer from lack of sharpness and what appears to be chromatic abberation. Tried on a D300S and a D800E with pretty much the same results. For the price, I'd look else where. This lens gets good reviews, so, I may have a lemon......
