As a pro who shoots wildflower and abstract nature macrophotography, I highly recommend this product. When I purchased my non-IS 100mm macro lens from B & H a few years ago, I thought I could get by without ordering the tripod ring, so I didn't buy one. But that was a huge mistake. The lens is heavy and I immediately encountered lens creep when the lens was mounted on my quality ball head. Sadly, when I went to order the ring, it was on backorder from the manufacturer. Been watching for its availability ever since. When I recently saw the ring back in stock at B & H, I immediately bought one. When I got it, I tried it out with the lens mounted on my gimbal head and ground level tripod...no lens creep whatsover! Yahoo!! If you're new to macrophotography, it's important to remember that most macro lenses are heavy. And when you put one on a ball head, the weight of the lens is going to pull it down a bit, causing lens creep...not much, but just enough to create some image blur in your photos. If you own one of the above non-IS macro lenses and are a stickler for image quality, then, I encourage you to buy the tripod mount ring. Yes, the ring is expensive but it's a small price to pay...rather than have your macro lens sit in the closet collecting dust.

Works well for its intended use, although it is rather pricey. The only complaints I have are that the adapter collar has plastic roller bearings so it's not as smooth as its counterparts on metal bearings. I have to loosen it nearly all the way for it move smoothly, where as my other lenses that use mount ring "B" don't. However, after some weeks of use it seems to be loosening up a bit (i.e. breaking in). The other issue is that it sits so far back on the 100mm lens such that it doesn't clear the grip and built-in flash on a 40D body. So you end up with about 300 degrees of rotation which I can live with.

Gave it 4 stars as this should come with the lens. Also, there are no instructions. Not difficult but still, Canon should be better than this.

A must for my Canon 70-200 f/2.8. Original mount broke and the good folks at B&H were there to help out. A must for using the heavy lens on a tripod.

Comments about Canon Tripod Mount Ring B:

The tripod mount ring B is well made and similar to the 300mm F4 ring. It mounts fine on a tripod or Arca-Swiss quick release plate. The thumb screw works well.

It seems the ring B is actually made to fit the 180mm F3.5 macro lens. It requires a plastic adapter (included with mount ring B) to work with the 100mm F2.8 macro (non-IS, non L) lens.

Aligning up the plastic spacer and pushing the lens into the gap is a big hassle. Then when you get it in place the plastic spacer tries to move aroungd. Canon should have designed a tripod mount ring that actually fits the 100mm F2.8 macro (non-IS, non L) lens.

I solved the issue by filing off the alignment taps and JB welding the plastic spacer to the lens. I don't recommend tis for the faint of heart. You could likely use silicone rubber instead. After the plastic spacer is stuck to the lens using the mount ring B is no issue with the 100mm F2.8 macro (non-IS, non L).

The tripod mount ring B is a quality product.

Comments about Canon Tripod Mount Ring B:

I attached the tripod mount ring to my Canon 100mm macro lens, then I attached the ring base to my camera rail. It really helped to solve the balance of the camera body and lens sitting on the rail. Before, I would attach the camera body to the rail and this would cause the camera to tilt slowing as I extended the rail. Not good when doing macro work. I'm happy with my purchase.

I purchased this product for macro photography using my EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro lens attached to a Canon T1i body. I went for the Canon product based on the many negative reviews of third-party offerings. Based on limited use, the mount seems to work well once I figured out how to attach it to the lens. It is sturdy and balances well. The major drawback is price.

I bought the cheap version of this ring elswwhere and realised that was a big mistake. My 100 macro and camera are a lot safer on this ring. I use it for macros on my Manfrotto tripod and its make it so much easier. With the pivot point moved foward between the camera and lens, it balances much better when adjusting the ballhead. Its a little confusing when installing it on the lens. The insructions to install it are in the lens manual. You could even search the net for instructions with pics. I am very satisfied with this product.

When I bought the Canon EF 100mmf/2.8 USM Macro lens I chose not to get the tripod mount because of cost. I found that when using the macro lens on my tripod I had difficulty framing extreme close up shots because the lens kept drooping just enough to irritate me so I forked out for the Tripod mount Ring B and boy did it make a difference. The tripod ring balances the lens on my 40D perfectly and now the lens stays where I put it. The ring also makes it much easier to switch the camera from landscape to portrait framing positions. I should have bought it with the lens.

Comments about Canon Tripod Mount Ring B:

I use this on a 100mm Macro Lens w/Tripod for closeup work. I use a Canon 40D. Very sturdy and easy to remove or adjust. Does not come with the lens..This is optional if you need it.

Before purchasing, my camera creeped on the tripod with my 100mm lens. This tripod mount ring has made all the difference -- keeping the camera rock solid and making my photos noticeably sharper. Also, just a turn of the dial makes it much easier to go from horizontal to vertical. This tripod ring is highly recommended.
