I mainly shoot weddings and portraits and have recently begun shooting stock and fine art gallery prints. I did my research among several different lenses to decide which was the best macro lens I could afford. I purchased the Canon 100mm macro lens and it was everything I hoped for and more. It is fast, accurate, and sharp! It focuses up close and in a pinch could be used for a quick portrait. The pictures are beautiful and I am very pleased with the final product!
A tripod is a must with this lens as it is not a light weight lens. It is not unreasonable to have to use a tripod with this type of lens to get the sharpest picture possible. I love this lens and definitely would make the same choice again.
B & H was asking for a review on this product since I recently purchased it I was happy to comply. By writing this review I am being entered into a drawing for a prize. Aside from that I would still give the same review for this high performing and quality Canon Macro lens!

Having been a user of various Macro/Micro lenses over many years as a Professional, I can fairly state that although this still does rank among the best available in the 50-100mm range, I feel that it is no longer the best option available to Canon Macro enthusiasts. This is coming from someone who covets an extensive range of incomparable Canon L series lenses! Having recently been in the position of being able to compare an array of modern Macro lenses side by side, (with fellow club members in Japan) I feel that it doesn't hold a candle to two of the new Sigma models. The 70mm f2.8 and 150mm f2.8 ! Both of them floor it with regards to bokeh, and in the area of extremely fast focus and superb color rendition. I never thought I'd say this, but in this case, Canon has a little catching-up to do. It just seems a little dated against these two phenomenal lenses. One important point to remember if you do go ahead and purchase this lens, is not to bother buying the totally useless accessory tripod adapter ring. It comes with an inner plastic sleeve to fit it to this particular lens, but all it does is jam & jerk whilst being turned! It feels absolutely third-rate, and is a total waste of money! A very good lens, but in this case can be bettered at the price. (I went for the Sigma 150mm f2.8 Macro to replace my current Canon 180mm f3.5 Macro. Believe me, it's that good!)
Expertise: 37 years as a working pro in various areas of wildlife & nature photography
Problems Encountered: That absolutely awful accessory tripod ring!

This is a great lens, but, being new to macro photography, I didn't realize how big and heavy it would be. It's also very difficult to focus, and the auto focus is not reliable.

Love Love Love. I bought this lens to capture the fine details of flowers, & baby features. I've noticed it also works well as a portrait lens too. It is a little heavy, but only took me 2 days to get use to it.

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Autofocus Lens:
I've only had this lens for a short time but I've really enjoyed owning it and have gotten some great shots. I would have liked to have had the IS version but there is no way I could have justified the cost. I use a tripod much of the time anyway. I highly recommend this lens and, as always, B&H service was great.

Great for up close photography and a good 100 mm lens.
The only down part is that the auto focus takes a long time andyou will have to asist the camera with manual focus.

I love my L glass and debated to go for the L macro but knowing I was only using it for parts of my newborn sessions I could justify that price. I am so glad I went with this one!!! Looking at my workflow with images from this lens over to my L I can not see a difference. It was quick to focus for a macro and it seriously is now my top two favorite lenses in my bag!!!

I compared this to the 'L'series 100mm which was almost twice the price and opted for this after reading many of the reviews. While it may not be L series quality it certainly offers comparable, high quality, sharp images at half the cost. I'd buy 2 of these before 1 'L'series lens...unless you absolutely must have an 'L'series don't spend the extra money.

On my 5d this lens has become my goto. It's lighter than my 24-70 and 70-200 and does a great job.Fantastic portrait lens and awesome at getting details. I can't believe I didn't buy it sooner.I picked up a hood so just buy it and shoot it. Make sure you get the hood too.

This has become my go to lens in most situations. Amazingly crisp photos, renders colors accurately, produces a real nice bokeh, and leaves a good amount of working distance.

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Autofocus Lens:
I use this glass for everything small - really small. It takes a bit of trial and error to focus because the bokeh is considerable with extreme close-ups. I recommend using a slider (on a tripod, of course) for accuracy and ease of focus. The next step up for this glass has IS and is a lot more expensive. Unless you're doing portrait work or otherwise use the lens at high apertures, you will need a tripod, making the IS pretty much irrelevant and money better spent on something else.

Over the first few weeks that I've had this lens, I've found myself repeatedly crawling around in my back yard looking for tiny flowers and insects to photograph. I can't wait for the spring wildflowers to start blooming in greater numbers here in central Texas.

Use the product to take pictures of nature, small objects, and to do portraits of my pet cats in angles and approaches impossible to achieve without this macro. For example, take a photo of the nose of a cat, with perfection occupying the whole picture, in the ratio of 1/1.

I put this lens on and immediately became excited about it. Its heavy and big and makes your camera look awesome! Ok seriously now...It is a great lens. Focusing is extremely quiet and smooth. The full-time manual is a very nice feature. The images are very sharp! Be aware, there is no image stabilization. Not too big a of a problem for me, but just something to keep in mind when shooting. Ive use this lens for some macros and still-life photos. I have also used it for portraits. This lens is well worth the money and you wont be disappointed. I am ready for all this snow around here to melt so I can start shooting some bugs.

My future with photography is moving toward Macro. Up until I purchased the 100mm I was using a 50mm for close-ups. I am in complete awe of the images produced with the 100. My macro shots have gone from good to great just by adding this lens to my gear.
