The EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens from Canon will focus over the full range from infinity to true life size (1:1 reproduction ratio) macro. Ideal for photographing details and small subject material, it also serves as a very sharp prime telephoto lens for portraiture and other applications. It provides a combination of versatility, image quality and superb handling.

A high-performance ring type Ultrasonic Motor provides fast and silent AF throughout its focus range, and full-time manual focusing permits the close-up or macro shooter to instantly override the AF whenever necessary. A 3-group floating system results in excellent delineation at all focusing distances and a focus range limiter function enables faster autofocus times within one of two appropriate ranges.

Features an advanced optical formula with a three-group floating element system for exceptional close-up performance.
Internal focusing means the lens length remains constant which is particularly important when shooting macro at short distances, especially when using an optional ring-type flash.
An ultrasonic motor (USM) provides outstanding AF speed at all focusing distances.
Wide manual focusing ring with smooth action & fulltime manual focus override even in AF mode.
A focus range limiter lets you set the focusing distance range from 1' to infinity or from 1.6' to infinity. By setting a more suitable range, focus hunting is minimized and autofocusing time is shortened.
Detachable tripod collar and Canon ring-type macro flash available optionally.

I shoot mostly desert wildlife and landscapes in Southern California. I needed a longer lens for my macro work since I only had the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM (which is excellent, by the way).
This lens is exactly what I wanted. The focal length is perfect on my 60D (APS-C sensor) for the subjects that I shoot. So far I have owned this lens for less than a week but took it on a 2-day backpacking trip in the Colorado Desert in California.

    Auto-Focus:
The AF is fast and pretty accurate but it is not always reliable. However, to be fair, I think the main limitation is the less than spectacular AF system in the 60D. I mainly use manual focus anyway because it is much more precise and it is what I am used to.

    Construction:
The construction is good. The manual focus ring is rigid and smooth. The weight is manageable. Compared to the tiny 60mm Macro, this thing is quite large and heavy. I have no problems walking around all day with this lens equipped. Even though the lighter weight and size of the 60mm is wonderful for hiking and backpacking, the longer focal length of this 100mm lens is just SO GOOD that the extra weight is worth it.

    Image Quality & Performance:
VERY SHARP. Compared to the 60mm, I'd say the IQ is equal. Both are extremely sharp corner to corner even wide open. But the longer focal length of the 100mm brings the background closer and gives a very pleasing out-of-focus blur. Another thing I LOVE about this focal length is that the extra working distance to my subject is AWESOME. I don't have to worry about scaring off some of the shy animals I photograph... and it also allows me to keep my distance from the dangerous ones! Low light performance is good. I prefer not to use artificial lighting but I have not yet had problems even with very close macro subjects in shady conditions or landscapes at dawn & dusk. Yes, this lens can be used for landscapes. The medium telephoto capacity brings distant mountains up close which can allow some interesting compositions that you won't get with a wide angle.
Did I mention that I LOVE this focal length?

    Value:
I think the price is fair considering what you get. AWESOME IQ. Good AF. Good construction. And AWESOME IQ!
You can get the L version if you have extra cash to spend but IS is extraneous if you can develop good shooting techniques.

    Bottom-line:
I've put several miles of hiking on this lens over a few days. I can confidently say that this glass will go with me every time I go on an adventure.

Having been a user of various Macro/Micro lenses over many years as a Professional, I can fairly state that although this still does rank among the best available in the 50-100mm range, I feel that it is no longer the best option available to Canon Macro enthusiasts. This is coming from someone who covets an extensive range of incomparable Canon L series lenses! Having recently been in the position of being able to compare an array of modern Macro lenses side by side, (with fellow club members in Japan) I feel that it doesn't hold a candle to two of the new Sigma models. The 70mm f2.8 and 150mm f2.8 ! Both of them floor it with regards to bokeh, and in the area of extremely fast focus and superb color rendition. I never thought I'd say this, but in this case, Canon has a little catching-up to do. It just seems a little dated against these two phenomenal lenses. One important point to remember if you do go ahead and purchase this lens, is not to bother buying the totally useless accessory tripod adapter ring. It comes with an inner plastic sleeve to fit it to this particular lens, but all it does is jam & jerk whilst being turned! It feels absolutely third-rate, and is a total waste of money! A very good lens, but in this case can be bettered at the price. (I went for the Sigma 150mm f2.8 Macro to replace my current Canon 180mm f3.5 Macro. Believe me, it's that good!)

Expertise: 37 years as a working pro in various areas of wildlife & nature photography

Problems Encountered: That absolutely awful accessory tripod ring!

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:

I do some wedding photography on the side, and have always struggled with the detail shots (rings, etc.) -- even with my L glass.

After doing some research on macro lenses, and learning that this lens also had portrait potential, I rented it for a weekend, and then immediately purchased it thereafter. There is very little editing to be done on photos shot with this lens, and the detail is crazy sharp -- so much so that I could not see the reason to purchase the IS. If you have enough light, you will be good to go!

I took one super sharp photo after another of my 8-month old (and very active) nephew on a sunny day in the shade on an undulating boat. This was my first -- and favorite -- shot of the day. Processing included very minor skin smoothing and a saturation of the blues only. I highly recommend this lens!

Great for taking close up photos. Shows nice detail.
I have to work on lighting to better help show off the item being filmed. Had a choice of this or the 60mm. This will be interchangeable if I ever change my camera body. The 60mm would only be good if I stayed with what I have.

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:

I am going to use this lens for small product and portrait work as well as macro. I could not afford the L lens with image stabilization. However, this lens works great since I will be using speedlites or tripod with my efforts. The lens is incredibly sharp. My technique for photographing bugs needs to improve as they don't stay still. The lens is a little heavy but I am not complaining. I am happy that the lens does not extend while focusing.

I purchased this just recently, really great for the price and although not 'L series' the image quality is not far off from the 'L series' I also use it with the canon ef25 extension tube for even better macro capabilities. It's not a bad portrait lens either.

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:

I'm enjoying the new macro possibilities. I'm finding best results require using a tripod if up real close and shooting f8 or higher. If money was no object, then I might prefer the IS version. But as it is I'm happily sharing clear and clean macro images on my blog.

This lens is a must - have prime lens. You definitely get the best bang for your buck. Super sharp, crisp pictures, fast lens. Ideal for close ups. The only thing missing is the lens hood - you have to order it separately.

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:

In the past I've rented this lens for the occasional commercial project but I picked up a job where I needed the lens for a couple of weeks so it finally made sense to buy one. I mainly shoot headshots and I love my 70-200 but I'm really impressed with this 100 mm.

Images are crisp across the frame and with very little CA. The bokeh probably isn't as 'creamy' as the 70-200 at full tele but it's less than 25% of the cost and it feels like 10% of the weight!

In fact, with a 50 mm f/1.4 on one body and this 100 mm on the other, my 70-200 hasn't been out of the bag - at least, not in the studio.

It's great for macro work - having rented the 100 mm L IS I don't really see a huge advantage, particularly given the current price differential.
