A large part of my photography tour business is teaching macro.
A ringlight is the most overlooked part of macro. Most folks own the lenses, but very few own the light. Photography is all about light.
I am around and use all the differrent brands of macro lighting regularly. I own several of these Canon Ringlights, and a Sigma Ringlight for Nikon. Have used the Nikon R1C1 quite a bit as well.
The hangups with both the Nikon R1C1 and the Sigma are the batteries and lack of battery boost. The Canon Ringlight accepts an 8 cell battery booster. That alone so trumps the others that it is an instant winner.
Someone stated here the Sigma is smaller, no, it is definitely bigger, both the head and the power pack are considerably larger than the Canon.
What I really like about the Canon ringlight is the user friendly interface and no extra parts. The Nikon R1C1 comes in a small cosmetic type case and has a huge collection of parts. Those many pieces can sometimes be overwhelming in the field, but no doubt be useful in a studio setting.
Another biggie is the tip of the Canon is compact so when pointing at bugs and the like in bushes, one is far less likely to bang the bush with the rig and spook the critter.
You have to be careful with the Nikon R1C1 because if you knock it off the tip of the lens it can hit the deck and break. With the Canon it is still tethered on the coiled wire.

It does what is supposed to, but there's lots of little annoyances. I should have returned it, but I missed the 30 day cut off. I don't imagine I'll be using this much and I'll probably sell it.
I use this with the 100mm f/2.8 macro.
Annoyances:
- The flash does not attach to the lens with the filter installed. It would not have taken much to make this possible, but I guess they just thought it wasn't important. I disagree.
- The controls are not very intuitive or awesome.
- The directional control isn't great. Switching from all-left-hand-side to all-right-hand-side isn't much of a change on real pictures.
Probably this is all fine if you mostly just want even illumination because you're photographing small things in a lab. But if you want more interesting photos, this flash won't give that to you.
For an E-TTL flash, the results can also be pretty bad. It took me some messing around with controls to get photos that weren't totally overexposed. The automatic features are definitely below those of the 380EX I have, which is many years old at this point.
Furthermore, it's pretty expensive and bulky for what it does. It works, but I would prefer the money I spent on it over having this flash today.
Bottom line: I should have gotten an off-camera cord for the 380EX. It would have been a much better option for me.

Comments about Canon MR-14EX TTL Macro Ring Lite Flash:
With close-in macro nature photography, adequate and even lighting is required for decent depth-of-field and shutter speed. This Ring Lite is easy to attach and use with my Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens. Out of the box, I was able to take my first macro test shots in minutes. The lighting provided is superior to a hot-shoe flash for the closest shots.
If I was to wish for an improvement, it would be to engineer wireless communication between the flash ring on the lens front, and the flash unit in the hot-shoe. The cable connecting the two sometimes gets in the way.

Comments about Canon MR-14EX TTL Macro Ring Lite Flash:
Have had the mt-24-ex twin-lite for some years, but find it somewhat cumbersome and potentially fragile in the field, although it is excellent in the studio. Have only had the mt-14 for a short time, but it works well with with my 5D-III and all of my macro lenses (65mm, 100mm, and 180mm), although all three required the purchase of macro adapters to make the mr-14ex fit in front of a UV filter. No learning curve, since it operates exactly like the mt-24ex.

It's a heavy unit once you get it on your camera, I think that the adapters should be front and center, I had to call later and order the adapters separately since I didn't realize the ring lite wouldn't just fit onto my lens without an adapter.

This Ring Lite has many uses; artistic, portraits, macro, and many more. Just use your imagination. Though I primarily use it for Macro photography. While I haven't used ring lite's often in the past, I am quite enjoying the various new things I can achieve with one.
While this Ring Lite is a great item to have in your collection, be aware that depending on the Lens you are using, you may need an adapter for the lamp itself to attach to the front of your lens.
For example, I have a 100mm Macro lens that takes a 67mm filter, to mount the light on the end of the lens I had to get an adapter (B&H# CAMLA67). The adapter Does Not restrict my view. Though I do tend to stick with primarily Canon products and accessories.

After reluctantly purchasing the ring lite flash for a specific assignment, I quickly became aware of how fantastic this item was.For many years I have used another lighting set-up simply because of the results I was achieving, however, it was at times, quite awkward. I have been using the ring lite for flowers, plants and other vegetation on a 100mm macro and I could not be happier with the quality. Easy to use and control; reduces shooting times in the field and an absolute joy to have in my kit! I will be interested to see how this unit performs in my regular shooting assignments.

Comments about Canon MR-14EX TTL Macro Ring Lite Flash:
My wife was reluctant to acquiesce to this purchase, but she finally gave in and she has had nothing but rave reviews since. I use it with an EOS T1i and 100mm F/2.8 macro lens. At first I was annoyed that you can't attach filters with this attached, but I quickly got over that when I saw the improvement in photos (hint, you can use filters, you just have to kind of mash them into the ring. I find they stay put and I get the best of both worlds). Colors are more uniform and and bright. The insects and arachnids I shoot have really come to life with the addition of this flash.
A word about settings. I usually set it with a 1:4 ratio and turn the compensation down to -1. Sometimes I go into the manual settings. Insects can be tricky, because they are shiny, but after about 2 days of working with this flash, I had three or four different settings I could go to and get good results. There really aren't that many settings (though for the uninitiated, it might appear intimidating at first). Now I've started experimenting with holding the flash behind and above to backlight and other things. The recycle time is super fast on 4 2300mA NiMH batteries. Wasn't sure what to expect there, given how you usually see these paired with battery packs and all that, but I've almost never noticed the refresh time.
It's a great flash for close-up and I'm extremely happy with it. I can do some night shooting, low light stuff in the woods is no problem. No matter what the sunlight, I can photograph even the tiniest leafhopper with this flash.
If I have any beef with it, it would be the inability to use filters without jamming them in (though, that works fine) and the ring light itself, which is plastic, feels delicate, to me.
