M-Audio CO2 Optical and S/PDIF Bi-Directional Converter
The M-Audio CO2 is a handy utility that converts Optical to S/PDIF and vice versa. The CO2 features Optical to S/PDIF, and S/PDIF to Optical modes as well as a Bi-directional mode. The B-directional mode enables the C02 to be used as a repeater when using long cables. The compact rugged design proves both convenient and reliable in and out of studio enviroments.

I just purchased my second CO2, to make the connection from PC output to stereo receiver input. I've used the first unit similarly, to convert/boost coax to optical. The unit has been on continually for over 3 years, and has performed flawlessly.
While I have not used it bi-directionally myself, it does appear to be the only affordable device to offer such a feature.
