Westcott Umbrella - White Satin with Removable Black Cover - 32"

You Pay: $22.55

This is a Westcott 32" Convertible Umbrella. Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a softbox.

Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.

Westcott umbrellas are rated safe for use with hot lights up to 1000 Watts.
This size is perfect for a 1 person head shot, or 3x4 ft product setup.

Great, compact, versatile and solidly built umbrella. I also own the 43" collapsible version also from Westcott and in some situations, that umbrella is just too big to when working with smaller subjects. This is where the 32" comes in handy.

I also like that the ribs are on the inside, as I typically use this umbrella in 'shoot-thru' mode, and the ribs aren't as noticeable on reflective subjects.

I do wish it had a collapsible shaft like its big brother to make transporting it easier. But unlike the 43", it does have a 'solid tip' end to prevent it from being pinched.

Used for indoor portraits, the shoot-through white produced a clean, soft light. Problem was that with a modeling light on, the locking mechanism melted even though it was about 6" away from the end of the Profoto reflector and 8" away from the bulb. The cylinder that allows the top to lock was made of plastic, though it should be made of metal. One gets what one pays for.

This is my second Westcott umbrella, inexpensive and reliable. I shoot food on location and I get great lighting using it without the black part shooting thru the white satin material .

Comments about Westcott Umbrella - White Satin, Black-32":

The Westcott reversible 32" umbrella is much better constructed than other umbrellas I've purchased. The shaft appears to be of stronger metal and thicker than others and the little flexing connectors are metal instead of plastic (these broke on my last umbrella). I also like how quickly I can pull off the black cover. Only the metal tips on the black cover hold it on. The point on the end of the my last umbrella had to be screwed on. I'm quite happy with my purchase and glad I bought two of them for my mobile/speedlight kit. Portraits and headshots on location couldn't be easier.

I love the smaller size - allows me to be very selective in what I'm lighting out doors. The black removable cover I use as a flag. Light is really soft when i shoot through. Just love.

I have no issues with this umbrella at all. It's extremely affordable and does what it's meant to. I've definitely worked with flimsier umbrellas in the past, and this one is good.

Comments about Westcott Umbrella - White Satin, Black-32":

This is a very well made umbrella for the price. The shaft is made from solid metal and is painted black so it doesn't dent or scratch like my other umbrellas. The interior is a satin silver/white that doesn't produce any color shifts. The Black cover is easily removed although it might take you a couple of minutes the first time you try it. This umbrella was made for photography, it is not a regular rain umbrella that was modified, so I'm sure it will last a bit longer. I like the size of 32", perfect for individual portraits and couples, plus it's easier to carry and set up than the 45" or 60" sizes. If you place your light-source towards the end of the shaft you have a 32" light which is plenty for most situations. Also, the smaller light source gives your lighting more direction.

Comments about Westcott Umbrella - White Satin, Black-32":

I like these small umbrellas. They are very well made, and with the black cover, look very nice with my other gear. The white satin is a very nice surface, works well for portrait work. I like these compared to the ones with covered spines because they tend to have a flat spot, and do not disperse light as evenly as this type.

Does what it says with my 580EX II, way better than using it bare bulb. make a nice diffused light

I barely use the black backing but i bet it'll come in handy some time. and its also good for keeping the white clean when in storage.
