Questions? Ask our experts:

The Pentax PF-80ED Spotting Scope is a large and terribly impressive optical performer, with a brilliant 80mm objective lens and the ability to accept any 1.25" astronomy eyepiece as well as 82mm filters at the front of the objective.  It is 100% waterproof and fogproof, with durable rubber armor over an all-metal housing that's got a rotating tripod collar with detented stops every 45°.  The fully multicoated optics feature Pentax's well-regarded SMC multicoating process, and an element of ED (extra-low dispersion) glass helps provide razor-sharp edge delineation to high-contrast subjects.

The PF-80ED's 1.25" diameter eyepiece specification allows less compacting of the light shaft produced by the objective lens, and thus a larger final image with superior depth perception.  Any great 1.25" eyepiece can be used, from Pentax themselves to elite telescope manufacturers' eyepieces such as Meade, Celestron, Vixen, and of course Tele Vue.  The PF-80ED has a focal length of 500mm.

The PF-80ED is amongst the very short list of premium spotting scopes that includes a view-through case as standard equipment.  This valuable accessory is quite nearly a necessity, and is not included but rather an expensive additional option with the European-made units.

Pentax supplies this scope with the Pentax USA's "Worry Free" Warranty; Pentax will repair or replace this spotting scope to the original purchaser (even if damaged by fault) for a small shipping charge.

Comments about Pentax PF-80ED 3.1"/80mm Spotting Scope (Requires Eyepiece):

I use this scope primarily for range shooting, and secondly for wildlife. I had this same scope for the last few years, and our home was burglarized and it was stolen. With insurance money, I could have bought any other one on the market, but didn't hesitate to buy this one again. The clarity is awesome, and good in lowlight too. I've used it many times in rain--no problem there. Even the case that stays on when in use is real nice and handy. For what I use it for, I have nothing negative to say.

Comments about Pentax PF-80ED 3.1"/80mm Spotting Scope (Requires Eyepiece):

Bought it with a fix focus Pentax SMC XF 12mm eyepiece. All Pentax scopes use standard 1.25 eyepieces. It has a 82mm thread for filters. Basically a link between photo lenses and astronomy equipment. You can't go wrong with Pentax.

Comments about Pentax PF-80ED 3.1"/80mm Spotting Scope (Requires Eyepiece):

I'm a keen weekend astronomer and as they say the best scope is the one you use the most.I wanted a scope I could have outside at night and not be concerned about dew, frost damage. The Pentax PF-80ED scope reviewed well ( Im aware of some less than favourable reviews of this product - this was NOT the case with the scope I received) I already own Penatx ED binos and am well pleased with the optics and build quality of them. I expected the Pentax spotting scope to be the same and was not disappointed.Light weight, all metal body, water proof/fog proof construction and easy adaptability for use with compact or DSLR camera seemed to be the way to go.I have compared the scopes optics with various binoculars and my 80mm triplet apo. There is only slight chromatic aberation that I can discern with nil flaring on bright objects ( moon and jupiter.) Banding on Jupiter was clearly seen at 142x using a Nagler 3.5mm EP. Objects viewed are sharp for the middle 80% of the lens diameter with only slight blurring towards the edges - all in all, very acceptable. The focus works well and the compression ring for attaching other 1.25 inch eyepieces works well. The included storage case can be used to protect from moisture and will come in handy for leaving the scope outside, covered and ready to use at 2am. I plan to use the scope with a Nagler zoom eyepiece together with 25x100 binos on a fluid head for quick scans with binos and then high power viewing through the spotting scope mounted just to the side of the binos. This is not a triplet apo scope, but for under $ with waterproof and fogproof construction and adaption for basic astrophotogrphy available, I am very happy with my purchase. Optics are 8-9/10.

        I'm Returning This Scope

Comments about Pentax PF-80ED 3.1"/80mm Spotting Scope (Requires Eyepiece):

Purchased this scope based on reviews that I had read online on birding and astronomy sites, and on customer reviews. Also purchased Pentax XW 14mm eye piece. Thought it would be an awesome combination for watching wildlife. Image was dull and difficult to view even with the 20mm eye relief. Image was not really sharp. A friend of mine had just purchases a different manufacturer's 80mm scope with 20-60 power eyepiece for less than half the price of the Pentax with the eye piece, and the image was brighter, clearer, and vastly superior. I'm returning this to B&H.

Comments about Pentax PF-80ED 3.1"/80mm Spotting Scope (Requires Eyepiece):

The Pentax PF80 Ed is a high performance spotting scope with excellent resolution and edge to edge sharpness at all magnification settings. When compared to other spotters costing significantly more money the Pentax was at least as clear and bright and the best value in the 80mm class. This spotting scope is primarily used at the rifle range to resolve bullet holes as small as .224" at distances up to 300 meters. The Pentax PF80 ED had no problems handling this task. Very satisfied would be an understatement.
