I wanted better sound out of my consumer level camcorder (Sony DCR-DVD201), but didn't know if this microphone was going to be "too much". I did a lot of research on various shotgun microphones and finally settled on this model because of price, physical dimmensions, flexibility (long and short barrels), the reviews on this site, and that it would more than likely be compatible with any camcorder upgrades in my future.
When I first plugged it into my camcorder and did some tests, there was a noticeble hiss (but not terrible). However, the overall sound quality it provided was so much better than the camcorder's built in microphone. I did some additional research and decided to compliment this microphone with an XLR adapter. My thought (based on my research) was that the XLR to mini-jack cable I was using may be a contributor to the hiss, and that the hiss had very little (or nothing) to do with the microphone. Upon receiving and testing the XLR adapter (BeachTek DXA-2s), my conclusion is that I now have the sound quality that I was hoping I'd have. The XLR adapter not only appears to have remedied the hiss, but also offers me audio level control (which my camcorder lacks).
I like this microphone a lot, and would recommend it very highly. My only disclaimer is that my research consisted only of internet research (not physically testing different brands or models)... so I can't say it is better than Brand X or Brand Y.

What a great idea! Use the short mic as an omni. Then screw on the interference tube and use it as a shotgun.
My finding: omni mic sounds good as a v/o mic when used up close, but not much "reach" at all when used on a boom pole. Then screw on the tube and try as a super cardiod: disappointing. Rejection from rear not good at all. Sound from mic behind almost as strong as when heard from the front. And in some respect, that's to be expected.

I use this mic to put Actors on taper for auditions. I am totally satisfied with the sound quality and the surrounding noise canceling. I am using it with the Canon 7D. With the adaptor cord $ it easily plugs in and works great.

I bought this mic and the Beachtek DXA-2T COMPACT DUAL XLR ADAPTER to use on my SONY FX-7. The sound quality from this mic is way better than the built in camera mic.
The only minus with this mic is that it has no indicator light to let you know when the mic is turned on or low battery situation.

Comments about Azden SGM-2X - Omni/Supercardioid Mic:
I purchased this shotgun microphone to use with my HDC-TM900 because I wanted to have an external microphone for my videos. The onboard microphone is good, but for short movies and such, you will need an external microphone. The sgm-2x came with a bad battery that was causing that wouldn't turn let the microphone turn on. It sounds great, and I'm not even sure if I'm using it to its fullest. I don't have much experience in audio, but it seems pretty easy to use this microphone.

I use the SGM-2 X mic for interviews in video production. It's a great mic is you're on a budget and performs very well for interviews. I've used it as an on camera mic but it would probably serve best on a boom pole because it's long and a little heavy for a mounted camera mic. It's VERY directional so it picks up targeted sound very well while leaving everything else in the background.

This microphone is great if you need a sturdy sound that doesn't pick up much noise. It's a little on the low side, meaning it picks up low tones, but overall, the sound quality is fantastic.
Plus it comes with extras like a shock mount and wind covers.

Comments about Azden SGM-2X - Omni/Supercardioid Mic:
I use this mic on camera mostly and it is really good, it has good sound quality and is very easy to use. The only thing that I do not like about the mic is that if you are using the supercardioid mic, it is really long and since it is so long the weight makes it lean down and if you don't get it just right it will get into your wide angle shot.

Comments about Azden SGM-2X - Omni/Supercardioid Mic:
I do interviews outdoors for my documentaries and I like to record specific animal sounds and ambient sound for my tracks. This mic is exceptional at "zooming" in on the sound or the voice, but it is so sensitive that just moving the camera through the air creates substantial wind noise even with the supplied foam windscreen on. The dual stage mic comes in handy, but, again, is so sensitive that the supplied windscreen is meaningless. Buy this mic and enjoy the reach and flexibility it provides, but if you are on the move or outdoors, get a substantial windscreen.

I'm a student that uses this for low budget productions. It gets the job done. I've used it as a boom and on camera and both work well. 5-15 ft seems to bring pretty good results, any further and you'll start picking up a lot more background noise.

So far I've done to "Run & Gun" shoots where there just wasn't time to properly set up with a lapel mic on the people. This shotgun mic was able to pull the sound I wanted and reject the off sounds I didn't want. It turned out better than I expected.
It give me great audio, works outdoors without problems, and is easy to use. What more could I want?
