The Fujinon Techno-Stabi TS 14x40 Binocular provides the kind of stabilization needed for its high 14x magnification, and is a joy to use handheld.  In easy conditions with 7 or 8x binoculars, it is relatively simple to get large, steady images up close and personal.  But as magnification increases, this becomes a more difficult task.  Eventually the smaller field of view and more pronounced shake of a large optic can render big binoculars a very frustrating affair.

But the Techno-Stabi's whopping 5° of stabilization in every direction makes it actually useful in such situations as tracking a moving subject while on a moving platform yourself.  It is also great for observing from airplanes, helicopters, or boats, and as a completely waterproofed unit it can be used effectively anywhere.

Beyond its stabilizing capacity, the Techno-Stabi 14x40 TS has Fujinon's EBC multicoatings upon every optical surface, and also has phase-coated Bak-4 roof prisms for great brightness and contrast. The Techno-Stabi accepts DC and AC power sources in addition to the 4 "AA" batteries normally used.

I used to use a pair of Steiner Military Marine 8x30's. They were optically very clear and bright. Even at 8x, theywould make my eyes hurt after extended viewing and 8x isn'treally all that powerful.I first saw these binoculars on Ken Rockwell's site and hehighly recommended them. I was looking for a pair ofstabilized binoculars and I was originally interested in theCanon 8x25. I never heard of these Fujinon but I waswilling to give them a try (and to spend the big bucks). After just 1 minute of use, Iwas blown away. The 5 degrees of image stabilization in ALLDIRECTIONS blows Canon away. Canon only gives you 0.7degrees of stabilization up and down...that's only good ifyou stand still and it compensates for your shaky hands. These Fujinon's have 5 degrees...you can walk with theseglued to your face and you wouldn't lose your subject. Inever knew things could be so crisp and clear at 14x withouta tripod. These binoculars are sharp with and withoutstabilization on....that's unbelievable. Ken Rockwell saysthat the Canon's get soft with stabilization on...he's right. Build quality isexcellent and even though they are a little on the largeside, they fit great in my hands. The focus knob is in agreat location and I can easily access it with no problems.I was originally used to Steiner's set it and forget itSports Autofocus but I like the focus knob on theseFujinon's better as it allows me to zero in on a near or farsubject. The exit pupils are small because this is a 14x40binocular but if you use these in daylight , then that's notan issue. Battery life is fine. I don't view them for hours at atime so the batteries last a decent amount of time. Thebinoculars come in a yellow Pelican 1400 case. It's a nicecase and quite unexpected being that the case alone isaround $60. I wouldn't take the case with me because it istoo big. I would rather put the binoculars in a smallercamera bag. I don't really know how else to describe them. Just trythem out and you'll understand. I think the uninformedconsumer goes for the Canon because they see that it hasImage Stabilization and they think that's cool but theydon't understand what that really means or the physicsbehind it. If you understand what 0.7degrees and 5 degrees of stabilization equates too or howCanon's stabilization and Fujinon's stabilization works, Idon't think you can do better than these binoculars at thisprice. These are an amazing pair of binoculars. I just wish theymarketed them more so more people could experience them.

    Expertise: Serious Hobbyist

Problems Encountered: No cover for the front objectives. I would have expectedsome push on caps at least. If you take good care of yourstuff, don't worry about it, if you beat on yourbinoculars...be careful. I tried to buy the $85 UV filtersand use them as a permanent lens protector but the UVfilters are orange and they make your whole image lookorange which is very weird. I would go for the polarizersbut they are very expensive. Other than that minor quip, the binoculars are built like atank and they don't suffer from any optical issueswhatsoever. I only gave design 4 stars because these are alittle on the heavy side.

Great image stabilization! I first bought the Canon 10x42L but was disappointed with the stabilization. All I can say about the Fujinon is wow!

However, I give it 3 stars for the following reasons:
    1) No lens cap or protection for the front of the lens. And, if you try to buy the Fuji filters they are not available. By the way, the Objective thread size is non standard so you cannot use a camera filter - way to go Fuji!
    2) I find it a lot harder to adjust the distance between the eyes, than I did with the Canon.

I don't know how to quantify it, but I think the Canons were sharper - it just that Canon's stabilization pales in comparison to Fuji's.

I'm not one to write reviews but, these binoculars are great. Other reviews have, for the most part, said it all except this. Don't bother trying to get filters from fujinon. They are expensive and hard to find. 48mm photo filters and lens caps fit these wonderful glasses. Normally I'm Nikon all the way. However, the TS1440 beat nikon by about [$]. There is no way you could be displeased with this unit. I would be surprised to learn if Nikon was better.

Comments about Fujinon 14x40 TS1440 Techno-Stabi Image Stabilized Binocular:

I purchased these after quite a bit of research and hemming and hawing. I own the Canon 10x42 IS and they are great but needed something with a little more IS for use on my kayak and so I finally broke down and got these.
I have been very pleased. They work really well as the reviewers I read said they would. Ken Rockwell had a really good review and detailed as only Ken can do He had used the Canons and his experience paralleled mine with them.
Canon, locked down very tight and the image was rock stable. But it was limited to just about a degree of wiggle and off she goes into the wild blue yonder. The image also did seem to be a bit soft with IS on (you really have to look).
With the Fuji 14x40s you have loads of image freezing capability. You are in a sort of slow motion world. However unlike the Canon it was hard to get a hard lock on freezing the subject. I mean as if the bono.s were on a tripod. There seemed to be just a tad of wandering around by the image. The image is still very stable just moving ever so slightly as if it were floating. Not a bad thing at all and allowed a more natural feel to the view.
The eye cups were nice and soft and much more comfortable than that of the Canon. But They are big 1.5" in diameter. I popped in some blinder type eye cups I had lying around and they snugged right up to my eyeballs. Ken made a comment about this in his report. Here is a solution Ken! (See picture)
The things are heavy. And not exactly aerodynamic. But they more than make up for this in the viewing.
They come with a flotation strap which is good. They also are shipped in a great water proof case. Though I don't thing the one I got was a Pelican. It had no marking and I have a bunch of Pelican case around.
The hand strap is good but it has to be too loose to allow your fingers to align with the buttons.
The on and stabilize button is good. It has a razed dot to tell it from the off button which is smooth. The Image stabilization has to run up a bit so you have to allow it a few seconds between the initialize button push and the stabilization on push when first turning them on. After that they will go into standby with a push and then fire right back up. They make a whine when they activate.
Anyway I think this is probably the best binocular I own and can't wait till Spring to get out on the lake with them.

We use these in our aircraft for aerial surveillance. These stabilized binocs are I believe the best for the price that can be found. 'much better than "image stablized" devices, these are the closest to real honest to goodness gyro stablized optics that one can find in this price range, without spending litterally thousands. Very solid in feel and construction and it comes with a perfectly fitted Pelican case, ready to go. Even a cut-out for the batteries. And, the folks at B&H are outstanding. So good to find customer service alive and well. We'll be getting ready to purchase a FLIR optics from B&H very soon.

My husband is a Coast Guard Captain has had trouble using regular binoculars due to diabetes and some shaking. He has wished for these for a long time so I started saving for them about a year ago. How wonderful it was to surprise him with these for Christmas. They are better than I imagined. The close focus and stabilizing feature is remarkable and he really likes how lightweight they are. I was so thrilled to give him this quality gift.

One of the best binocular out there....when I got my hands on this binocular,
i was knocked off my feet after looking through them. The image are super clear and when activating the stabilization feature - man does it work!
I was able to see things that I was never able to from a distance due to the "shanking" you get with a high-powered binocular. Also they are much cheaper than the Nikon version, but on the same if not better quality.
If you do your research on stabilization binoculars, Fujicon are the pioneer in these types of optics. Yes, the are expensive, but worth every cent you pay for them. I would highly recommend this to anyone who appreciate a good quality, crystal clear, high-powered, binocular with a really good stabilization features. I would recommend this feature if you have a high powered binocular and you plan on using it without a tripod.

Fujinon's Techno-Stabi is in a class by itself for marine use. Others stabilized binocs are for handholding on solid ground but useless at sea. I don't own a pair but but have used them for a number of years on a 46' boat offshore. They make the higher powers - e.g. 14X - usable and allow nav aids to be identified at amazing distances.

The battery compartment is not built for marine environments. The tin contacts are thin walled, corrode and break easily.

The optics are good and stabilize well.

I bought the product for Birdwatching, star gazing, spotting from aircraft and general sightseeing.
My first real use was on a small boat off the coast of South East Tasmania at Tasman Island. I was absolutely "blown away" by the stability provided to enable me to watch Australian Gannets, Wandering and Royal Albatross, Shearwater and Petrel. There is no way that I could have observed these soaring birds in that small boat with ordinary binoculars. Once used to it the weight is not an issue. Magnification had me in awe as I felt that the birds were right by my side. Truly, these bino's exceeded all my expectations. I can't wait for recording and camera to be added as a feature - I'll be first in line. The only negative is re the magnification - it can be hard to pick up your subject at first. A "laying of cannon" approach is necessary - eye sight, elevate and oscillate to target the image then feast your eyes!

I thought my days of using binoculars without a tripod were over, now i can't put them down! My home is on a remote island off the N.E. coast of Tasmania, to see all the whales & wildlife up close and personal again is simply fantastic! Ony wish the LED was a bit brighter, other than that i'd recommend these to anyone, terrific piece equipment. Should have bought them years ago, money well spent.

Excellent Binoculars. I've used many types while working on various boats. The only binos to touch these are the Fuji Stabiscope with the gyro. The only thing is that those cost $6000! Not worth the small gain in performance.
If you want great, clear, stabil binoculars, then take a look at the Techno-Stabi.

Comments about Fujinon 14x40 TS1440 Techno-Stabi Image Stabilized Binocular:

I had tried out these binoculars at B&H, so I had a pretty good idea of what to expect. I intended to use them on a search & rescue boat to enhance scanning and identification effectiveness. The instructions are simple and clear, and I immediately tried then out at home. The effect of the stabilization was dramatic, and I could read small lettering on a sign at 300 yards. The image is clear and bright from edge to edge, easy to focus. The control buttons are simple and comfortable to use.

Testing them on rough water revealed no problems and proved that this was a giant leap forward in vision. The finest glass in the world will provide a shape image, but if that image is bouncing or vibrating your perception will be greatly impaired. These binoculars not only solve that problem with both horizontal and vertical stabilization, but allow increased magnification.

These waterproof binoculars are well protected in their Pelican case. I have read of other similar products being very sensitive to rough treatment and accidental dropping. These binoculars seem fairly rugged, but I am aware that inside are gyros and sensitive mechanisms, so I will take extra care. How ruggedly protected they are from boat vibrations and the occasional bumping and knocking only time will tell, but I have confidence this problem was considered in their design.
So far I am very pleased. The binoculars perform very well.

Compared to a Cannon 10x stablized binoculars these are more powerful and have better stability but the unit takes 4 batteries instead of 2 and is a bit to the heavy side.

I originally bought the Canon 10X42L but I was not too happy with the stabilizing system. I read reviews about this and I figure I give it a try. There is a day and nigh difference between Cano's and Fujinon's stabilizing system. The Fujinon is much better.

Optic wise, I like the Canon 10x42L better. I find it harder to adjust the spacing between the eyes on these than I did on Canon's.

ALSO, be aware that these binos do not come with any protection for the lens! AND, it is not a standard size, so a lens cap or filter is out of the question. Fuji makes special filter, but nobody has them in stock.
